  1. Zach Pop is a legitimately terrible comparison player for Varland and isn't someone you should be bringing up to outline why attaining Varland is so bad.
  2. Gausman will obviously need to put up more than 2 ace level starts but his last 2 times out were very encouraging. He carved up the Yankees with an elite fastball that day and followed this up with the elite bat missing version of his splitter against the Giants. I'm particularly encouraged by the improved splitter movement as this has largely been missing the last few seasons. I believe it's far more realistic for Alek to return to this type of form next season. At this point he's only about 13 months out from surgery and I wouldn't be at all surprised if he struggles a bit with command. On top of that he's the team's 7th rotation option once Bieber is good to go, and barring injury from one of the first 6 starters it's possible he doesn't even make his way back to the 26/27 man roster at any point this season.
  3. I believe you are dramatically overreacting here. Varland offers the rare pen combination of elite stuff and command and presents a ton of upside. He's already produced a full win above replacement with 1/3 of the season left to go and has a shot to be the team's best reliever for the next 5 seasons. I see elite closer potential in this guy, and if he doesn't reach that level he's likely a fine setup man moving forward. For what it's worth baseball trade values lists this trade as a tiny overpay in favor of the Twins with Varland being the most valuable piece involved. This is Varland's first year pitching primarily out of the pen and outside of potential injury I see no reason to expect him to suddenly turn into a pumpkin. Rojas and Roden have proven literally nothing in MLB and neither of them are the sort of sure fire studs that you seem to be suggesting.
  4. I think it's far more likely that Gausman rediscovers his ace form vs Manoah morphing back into a post season level starter this season.
  5. That's just adorable that you are referring to other Blue Jays fans as casuals.
  6. Sitting on the injured list.
  7. I really like Rojas but I think he's a very real risk to end up in the bullpen given his difficulties in avoiding the injured list. Varland produced similarly dominant numbers in his stint in the minor leagues, and this could very well be a case of the Blue Jays trading a future reliever and a corner outfielder who was largely blocked by others in the system for a reliever with stud potential. I think that Varland very well may be a pitch mix tweak or two away from becoming a back of the bullpen monster.
  8. Who gives a flying f*** what Doval did last year?
  9. This is Varland's first year as a reliever. He has a nearly 40% whiff rate curveball and I think with a bit of tweaking to his pitch arsenal he's a monster lying in wait.
  10. I'll grant you the second claim but there's not a snowball's chance in hell for the first outrageous claim.
  11. Last I checked Will Wagner was on a major league roster. In fact he was receiving regular starts on one of MLB's best teams.
  12. It's literally a once in a lifetime thing for a player to watch his father be inducted into the baseball hall of fame. I think it would be weird for a second generation major leaguer to pass up on this type of occasion.
  13. Yeah that's perfectly fair.
  14. I'd guess the White Sox are asking for too much in trade. Robert is likely a rental as I don't think there is a front office aside from the White Sox who would consider picking up his $20 million option for next season.
  15. He's dropped the strikeout rate to 25% in AAA.
  16. WTF man the team loses a series and now you're back to full on Debbie Downer mode?
  17. I think Dominguez is a directly comparable acquisition.
  18. I'm sure you know by now that there is far more context to Hoffman signing with the Blue Jays than a few failed physicals. The Braves and Orioles passed on signing him as a starter but were absolutely willing to sign his as a reliever.
  19. I think the Blue Jays already have a reliable closer, but another pen arm would be a really nice addition to lengthen the pen further.
  20. I like that the team hung onto the pitchers who appeared to present higher ceilings as I expect both of Stephen and Watts-Brown likely max out as 4-5 types.
  21. Fingers crossed Bieber shoves and is amenable to an extension. I really doubt it though given how close to free agency he is with the player option. I think the only way he exercises the option is if he suffers from some kind of setback and/or really struggles for the rest of the season so all of the risk is being taken on by the Blue Jays here.
  22. I don't recall hearing about any kind of setback, I believe the team planned a simulated game for Manoah to better control his innings/up-downs vs an official game.
  23. I think the team needs to get something closer to a full strength lineup to return at the very least. I think that all of Kirk, Springer and Varsho should be back soon, with Gimenez hopefully not too far behind. The depth players have done a tremendous job in allowing this run up the standings to occur, but the constant string of B lineups with bench quality players populating the majority of the lineup was bound to run out of magic eventually.
  24. I believe Vlad is actually making something like $48 million total this season when you factor in the bonus.
  25. Don't try to pretend that if you were a Braves fan that you wouldn't be calling for AA's head. Despite the regular season success his teams have won something like 1-2 games combined in the post season since the world series win, and the team has a poor farm system on top of a serious downturn at the major league level in recent seasons.
