I think Dominguez is a directly comparable acquisition.
-
I'm sure you know by now that there is far more context to Hoffman signing with the Blue Jays than a few failed physicals. The Braves and Orioles passed on signing him as a starter but were absolutely willing to sign his as a reliever.
-
I think the Blue Jays already have a reliable closer, but another pen arm would be a really nice addition to lengthen the pen further.
-
I like that the team hung onto the pitchers who appeared to present higher ceilings as I expect both of Stephen and Watts-Brown likely max out as 4-5 types.

Fingers crossed Bieber shoves and is amenable to an extension. I really doubt it though given how close to free agency he is with the player option. I think the only way he exercises the option is if he suffers from some kind of setback and/or really struggles for the rest of the season so all of the risk is being taken on by the Blue Jays here.

I don't recall hearing about any kind of setback, I believe the team planned a simulated game for Manoah to better control his innings/up-downs vs an official game.

I think the team needs to get something closer to a full strength lineup to return at the very least. I think that all of Kirk, Springer and Varsho should be back soon, with Gimenez hopefully not too far behind. The depth players have done a tremendous job in allowing this run up the standings to occur, but the constant string of B lineups with bench quality players populating the majority of the lineup was bound to run out of magic eventually.

I believe Vlad is actually making something like $48 million total this season when you factor in the bonus. -
Don't try to pretend that if you were a Braves fan that you wouldn't be calling for AA's head. Despite the regular season success his teams have won something like 1-2 games combined in the post season since the world series win, and the team has a poor farm system on top of a serious downturn at the major league level in recent seasons.

I ran a quick Statcast search on Dominguez and it appears as though he's only been a tad unlucky vs left handed hitters as evidenced by a .348 xwOBA/.366 wOBA split. I really liked the look of his splitter when he located in properly last night, but when he hung the splitter it reminded he an awful lot of Hoffman's misplaced splitters as they tend to have very little movement when left up.

General Blue Jays Discussion Thread (2025)
max silver replied to Ryu In My House's topic in Toronto Blue Jays Talk
MLB would never agree to implement a floor without extracting their pound of flesh from the player's union. This discussion is obviously moot as the MLBPA would never accept a salary cap system under any circumstances, but I still maintain the opinion that the current system is actually pretty skewed to favor the owners at this point. -

You are assuming that the salary cap would be set at a low level in the $200 million range vs settling in at closer to $350-400 million, and that the floor would be set barely above where the el cheapo teams are already spending. Of course the players wouldn't accept levels like that, but if MLB presented a cap system where both sides benefit it could actually be possible. -

I don't agree. I think that the luxury tax acts just like a salary cap except it doesn't come along with a requisite salary floor to force the tightwad owners to spend money on their teams. I believe the MLBPA would be far better off to finally accept a salary cap that forces the owners to open up the books and fully share revenue at a 50/50 split with the players. -

That felt like a complete accident to me with the pitch slipping out of the pitchers hand. -

That pretty much represents society as a whole as the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. -

I really don't think that the MLBPA does a very good job looking after the lower and middle tier player in the CBA negotiations. The negotiating committee tends to be populated by some of the highest wage earners in the sport and as such the CBA deals tend to be skewed in a fashion that ensures that the stars continue to earn top dollar while everyone else is largely left fighting for the remaining scraps. -

Fingers crossed neither of these situations end up being long term in nature. Thank goodness Springer managed to turn his head at the last moment, when I saw that play real time I was worried the pitch caught him in the side of the face. I do wonder if these two potential head injuries might increase the team's interest in acquiring a bat, the Kwan rumors just refuse to die so there could be some fire behind the smoke. -

The offense wasn't necessarily bad today. A key play was Mullins robbing a potential 3 run home run earlier in the game, that was a game changing play and who knows how the final score ends up if that ball left the park. -
Grant77 188 Started conversation: 4 minutes ago I referenced statcast range in the very first post that you responded to. You won't make any friends by being an insufferable nitwit. Don't bother responding, you're blocked. Apparently Grant can't handle being told rather gently that he's a little out of date on the advanced defensive metrics. I'm trying not to lose sleep over this but it's going to be really hard.
-
You have mistakenly suggested several times that Statcast range doesn't exist, and that's not true. You then suggested that you only look at Fangraphs Statcast values and incorrectly stated that Fangraphs doesn't display range. It wouldn't kill you to simply admit that you didn't know these statistics were readily available vs trying to save face by making up excuses. Go ahead and block me if you feel the need, I've just been trying to be helpful to bring you up to speed a little bit at what's readily available online for defensive metrics.
-
I fully expect the team to at least add a rental reliever at the deadline given the far more reasonable cost.
-
You need to look a little harder, Fangraphs definitely displays Statcast range values on the player pages. OAA definitely has a range component. Open up Bo's baseball savant page and go to the fielding tab and you can find the range values. Bo is presently sitting a -2 runs for range presently. The chart below didn't quite paste properly as I'm still trying to determine how to reliably share these but the non highlighted -2 values denote Bo's range value. Wow I'm surprised that this could potentially be fair value for Cabrera who looks to be an ace in waiting with a little bit of tweaking of his arsenal. I'd guess that the Marlins would like some of the high octane arms in the system in a potential trade as well, although I don't know the state of their farm system and present needs.
