  1. Where did I say any of that? As it stood the Blue Jays only had a handful of open pen spots to add to the pen to the point where it was necessary to move one of Fisher or Fluharty to AAA to avoid losing Nance. This type of criticism is made completely with the benefit of hindsight in which you pretend you knew that all of the leverage arms would simultaneously struggle to produce outs after largely being very effective over the previous 65-70% of the season.
  2. That's cool that you place far more emphasis on the 2 weeks of this season where Varland struggled vs the 4.5 months where he was a really effective pen arm. This is his first season of strictly relieving as he was bounced back and forth from the rotation and pen in prior seasons, and up until the last few weeks he was firmly in the midst of a breakout season. Even with the rough 2 weeks his season numbers are still really good. That's cool that you would try to make the point where it's more likely that he's going to be DFA'd in 2027 instead of getting himself sorted out because of these 2 bad weeks. I always find it fascinating how some of the fanbase chooses to ignore the more successful portions of a players career before they become Blue Jays and become hyper fixated on the initial portion of struggles in a Blue Jays uniform. This was the case with Varsho, Gimenez, Santander and now apparently Varland as well.
  3. I can only guess that the front office was hoping that Garcia would have been able to make his way back by season's end and this factored in to not bringing in a third relief option. As it was the emergence of Nance made it necessary to send a completely undeserving reliever to AAA and this would have been compounded further if another reliever were brought aboard. I think far too much is being made of a short term struggle for Varland vs looking at his entire body of work this season, and with appropriate adjustments to allow his command to return to previous levels he can return to being a highly effective reliever for the rest of the season and moving forward.
  4. Dominguez is a rental and is running a nearly 30% k rate as a Blue Jay.
  5. The bullpen is certainly a concern at the moment, but I think a large part of this is just unfortunate timing of all of the leverage arms slumping at the same time. There is too much talent in the pen for this level of struggles to continue for the rest of the season as a whole but it’s absolutely a massive concern in the short term. This kind of reminds me of the excessive level of doom posting in April with the offense when a nearly team wide slump led to some awful offensive numbers over the first month of the season before they collectively reversed their fortunes over the next 4 months.
  6. That's wild that the Pirates traded a legitimate prospect to bring in IKF on a free agent contract level of salary. The front office really made some hay as they enjoyed a fantastic half season from IKF and brought in a slugging prospect to add some depth to the system.
  7. I didn't think Tommy John was going to be in the cards as Yimi's issues were nerve related and not ligament related. I think Romano's surgery was also minor in nature and he didn't bounce back particularly well so hopefully Yimi experiences more success.
  8. You obviously didn't think about this very much. Varsho has a whopping total of 179 PA up to this point of the season, and his power numbers are very real. Among hitters with a minimum of 170 PA he's 2nd in MLB in ISO at .346. He has a slugging percentage of .574 right now. If you prorate his numbers to something approximating how many PA he would have accumulated at this point of the season with typical playing time he'd be sitting at 38 HR and 108 RBI if he continued at the same pace.
  9. It looks his command is improving nicely as well as he's only surrendered a total of 6 walks over his last 4 starts/23 innings pitched.
  10. I was wondering if Yeuni Munoz would make it onto this list as he mashed in A ball to a 170 wRC+ so far, although he has had a bit of trouble staying on the field this season. Hopefully this a sign of an impending breakout although the 68% contact rate needs some work.
  11. That's easy, you just have Nance pitch all of the leverage innings from the 6th-9th inning.
  12. I'm not panicking in the slightest. Varland is going through a bit of a rough patch at the moment and I'm not going to pretend like it doesn't count solely because of an obscure statistic like xFIP which can't account for quality of contact. Further to that it wouldn't be the end of the world if Varland is slotted a little lower in the pen hierarchy until he proves to be able to reliably retire hitters again.
  13. That also happens when you throw bad pitches as well you know.
  14. He's also allowed a 96.1 MPH average exit velocity and a corresponding .388 xwOBA. Call it bad luck but the fact of the matter is that he's surrendering a ton of hard contact against at the moment no matter what xFIP suggests.
  15. Lauer has been announced as Wednesday's starter so if he pitches today I doubt it would be to provide very much length.
  16. Me watching Bieber carve up Marlins hitters:
  17. I watched a quick interview clip with John Schneider and it sounds like Vlad is doing much better and could be available in tonight's game. At worst he made it sound as if Vlad should be able to return over the weekend.
  18. It's ultimately a good thing that Nance pitched so well he made it necessary to option a completely undeserving reliever down to the minors for the next week and a bit.
  19. I breathed a massive sigh of relief that this dude wasn't traded at the deadline. He's probably my second favorite pitching prospect in the organization right now.
  20. His stuff has decreased precipitously upon his return. Hopefully the velo eventually returns as he's a shadow of his former self.
  21. Bieber is just coming back from major surgery and Scherzer has been carefully managing a nerve related thumb issue all season long. I don't see why the club should completely throw caution to the wind and push either of these guys to an unnecessary degree.
  22. And if nobody ends up getting hurt there could still be suspensions handed out.
  23. I don't know if I would quite characterize this move as spineless/gutless etc. I'd prefer Lauer to stay in the rotation as I believe he's fully deserving of a full time starter slot but I do believe that this isn't a permanent demotion. With both of Bassitt and Berrios struggling at times having a high quality long man such as Lauer to act as a safety vale can give the team a chance to keep games close vs burning through a ton of leverage arms. The team is still far stronger with Bieber in the rotation to replace Lauer and Lauer as long man than it was prior to the Bieber acquisition, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if the team has their struggling rotation members essentially take turns missing the occasional start and acting as long man in the pen.
  24. So the difference between Santander being good (120 wRC+) or useless (114 wRC+) is 6 points?
