  1. That was basically just a brief cup of coffee style scenario so I intentionally disregarded that portion of his career. At point he was still the heir apparent to take over from Martin, so trading him at that point in time wouldn't have been in the cards.
  2. Jansen has never really hit much at the MLB level, so I'm not sure if he ever had a ton of trade value in the first place.
  3. I remember that Gurriel was stationed deeper earlier on when he was first learning to play the outfield. The deeper positioning creates it's own set of issues as it ends up with weakly hit shallow fly balls would end up dropping in front of him on a regular basis as he doesn't have very good closing speed. It's totally a pick your poison scenario, you play him at normal depth and watch him misplay easy fly outs into extra base hits, or you die the death of a thousand cuts with the multitude of bloop hits that end up dropping in front of him. I don't give him too much credit for the sun conditions in Dunedin, he's misplaying balls on a regular basis on the road and at home in Buffalo as well.
  4. He's rapidly becoming completely unplayable out there as he's been butchering several routine plays several times a week recently. If he could simply catch routine fly balls he could be at least an average if not better left fielder with the crazy amount of runs he's able to cut down at the plate. He's easily the worst Jays outfielder in recent memory which is too bad, he has the athleticism to make high end plays but the instincts are so bad that he routinely botches the easy plays.
  5. As bad as Teoscar was in left field initially he looked like a gold glover compared to Gurriel.
  6. Cool breakdown here. I recall Buck (of course you need to take this with a grain of salt) mentioning that McGuire was basically setting the glove in the middle of the plate since Manoah's pitches move so much. I have a hard time believing a major league catcher is actually calling for a pitcher to throw thigh high changeups and sliders given the propensity for pitches at that location to be crushed, that's just not a location you would be shooting unless a pitcher was really struggling to throw strikes.
  7. Losing Phelps for the entire season really hurts as well. He was filthy in the short stint of innings early on.
  8. I don't think it's entirely fair to blame the catcher for the pitcher throwing meatball pitches over the heart of the plate.
  9. It seems to me that the Jays didn't have a lot of interest in signing anybody for more than a year or two other than early target Gausman. Understandably the club intended to give Roark one final opportunity to prove that he wasn't totally cooked. Atkins mentioned wanting to provide opportunity to young rotation candidates, with guys like Pearson, Manoah, Hatch and Woods Richardson all at or rapidly approaching MLB ready status it's not hard to see why the front office didn't want to tie up too many rotation spots. With the rash of injuries and poor performance it's definitely easy to second guess not signing anybody else for the rotation, but in the end the bullpen ended up being the bigger concern despite really being beefed up in the offseason.
  10. Walker's been great up to this point, but I have a hard time seeing him maintaining a 3.6 HR/FB percentage going forward. He also has a sizeable gap between woba and xwoba, so he's a prime candidate to experience some regression in his results.
  11. I'll take a gifted victory over a well played moral victory any day of the week.
  12. Vladdy is also doing this despite a good chunk of the league's pitchers basically supergluing the ball to their fingers.
  13. I'd like to think that would happen but Charlie still goes out of his way to get Panik regular playing time even when everyone is healthy.
  14. He was starting to have knee problems actually, but luckily he avoided serious injury while he was lugging the extra pounds around.
  15. To me it's tossup between them who gets sent down when Springer returns. Neither guy has been receiving a ton of playing time as is, the resulting outfield DH/logjam is just going to complicate things further.
  16. This isn't really what MLB is finally looking to crack down on. It's more the guys who are literally glueing the ball to their fingers that are under the crosshairs.
  17. Check out his spin rates this year compared to previous and you'll find your answer.
  18. Striplings turnaround has been very encouraging, it was nice to see him keep a very hot Astros lineup mostly in check today. Thornton has looked very sharp out of the bullpen lately, if he keeps throwing darts like he was today I wouldn't be upset to see him start receiving higher leverage innings in the future.
  19. I can't see the team going with two rookie catchers, there's simply too much a learning curve for that be a realistic option. I think that one of Jansen/McGuire is safe for the duration of the season.
  20. Yikes that's scary s***. Hopefully he turns out ok after this.
  21. Messing with the seam height isn't something that you would want to trifle with before fully considering the potential consequences. But baseball has had zero qualms about f***ing with the baseball in the past so this actually sounds right up Manfred's alley. It's totally shoot first ask questions later with MLB.
  22. Martin is poised to go on a real tear with the bat.
  23. That's just too true. I wouldn't have guessed that Manoah would end up getting lit up against the light hitting Marlins team after his dazzling debut against the Yankees.
  24. Interestingly enough over the last two seasons up to this point Rowdy is actually striking out a lower clip than Panik, it's a 17.5% k rate for Rowdy vs. 17.6% for Panik.
  25. It was nice to see the bullpen and bats pick up Manoah after his rough outing. I was impressed with the parade of flamethrowers the Marlins were able to throw at the Jays so full marks to the team for battling it out on the way to a hard earned victory.
