  1. If the Jays were to lose out on Semien I would prefer they just return Biggio to second base for next year. He's a cost controlled option that plays a decent second base. My fallback Semien option would be to upgrade at third base through free agency with somebody like Kris Bryant.
  2. Holy s*** that's crazy. It's time to really go for the jugular and sweep the Yankees in their home ballpark. This is the game of the 4 which I thought would be the hardest to win, but with this out of the way it's time to go for broke.
  3. If the Jays were able to get Semien to sign I would honestly prefer him over Correa. Correa is likely to receive one of these 10 year mega contracts, and he's had a lot of trouble staying on the field during his career. Semien is basically like the current day version of Cal Ripken who plays every day, and a 5 year deal for him would make it easier to work in extensions for the young core when the time comes compared to adding a contract the likes of which it will take to land a player like Correa.
  4. It's possible to inspect spin rates over time using Baseball Savant. On Cole's Statcast pitching info page there is a pulldown that shows pitch % by season. You can adjust this to show average spin rate and then sort it by game and select just the 2021 season for a clear picture. Cole has seen his spin rates recover a bit over the last while after really crashing hard in June, but they aren't back to the point where they were early in the season.
  5. So is anyone here still complaining that the front office didn't sell off Ray and Semien at the trade deadline? Seriously f*** that loser mentality ********, this is an uber talented team that can make some serious noise in the playoffs if they manage to get in. I for one sure as hell prefer to give the team a shot to go on a run in the second half and get treated to meaningful baseball in September rather than pack it in and plan for next year.
  6. You are making yourself looking like a fool with this Boston Red Sox hate. This is a team with a +58 run differential. They have scored the third most runs in baseball (2 spots above the Jays) and they have a middle of the road pitching staff (6 spots below the Jays in ERA). That is hardly the makings of a sub .500 baseball team.
  7. There is zero chance a 3 year deal is going to get it done. Ray is not turning 30 until October. Like any other free agent signing the latter years are likely to be less productive than the earlier years, but barring something like a 6 or 7 year deal I think a Ray signing will most likely produce decent value.
  8. Is there really any reason to doubt this is what Ray is going forward? This started in spring training, and after hurting his elbow and having a little bit of a slow start after coming back he's been dealing ever since. Maybe he won't be challenging for Cy Young awards every season but I really think he's going to be a top of the rotation pitcher for the immediate future.
  9. The last two innings of this game were just a crazy roller coaster. I can imagine all too well how A's fans must feel after this one given how many disappointing losses the Jays poor bullpen has been responsible for. At least all of the worst offenders are gone in Chatwood, Dolis, Hand and Thornton.
  10. He's already in the midst of one. He has a WRC+ of 207 for the last 7 games excluding tonight. I read plenty of postulations that he was regaining weight and that was why he was struggling, and it was also suggested that his numbers were mostly the creation of playing in minor league parks and that he couldn't hit at Rogers Center. That nonsense can be flushed down the toilet where it belongs.
  11. Yeah it's great to get wins but the boys struggled to beat the O's and Tigers in successive series. The offence needs to start pulling it's weight soon if there is to be any chance whatsoever of going on a run.
  12. Orelvis is an absolute monster prospect. His traditional numbers so far in his career are pretty eye popping. In only 525 at bats he's produced 33 home runs, 34 doubles and 117 RBI. He looks to have struggled a bit in high A Vancouver. Digging into his batted ball statistics I see he only has a .211 BABIP but this may have been earned and not a bad luck situation as he has gotten pretty fly ball heavy, as his fly ball rate has jumped at the expense of his line drive rate. One encouraging bit is that he's managed to cut 5% off of his strike out rate. Walks have dropped a little at the same time however. I think that as he gets a little older and starts to get a good handle on approach at the plate he may put up even more impressive numbers given the massive raw power and early ability to tap into it.
  13. Bottom 3rd of the lineup isn't very confidence inspiring. I'd like the club to use Teoscar in center so that we wouldn't need to see so much of Grichuk's ice cold bat in the lineup.
  14. I think the crackdown basically broke Chatwood as well. MLB really needs to avoid s*** like this in the future, it's just so bush league to ignore a growing obvious issue like this for years and then to change the rules in the middle of the season with no alteenative grip agent to fall back on.
  15. Gurriel and Bo are remarkably similar in that reaching both of their offensive ceilings will be predicated on a tangible improvement in their respective plate discipline. Bo offers a lot more in the field and on the bases so obviously he will come out ahead in any overall comparison.
  16. Looks like the time away has broken your internet sarcasm detector.
  17. At the time I didn't really love the potential signing as I thought Gurriel was likely to be just as good but much cheaper as well. That certainly didn't end up being the case when the dust settled as Gurriel has ultimately had a very disappointing season all things considered with the defensive regression and early sustained struggles at the plate.
  18. I don't think Lindor has much to worry about given his 10 year $341 million contract. And to think that he's turned into such a classy statesman giving the middle finger to the fans. Real win all around for the Mets with this deal and contract. Jays dodged a real bullet from the looks of things not making the trade for Lindor.
  19. The guy's baseball related posts are perfectly fine, but for some reason he prefers to show up on a message board with the intention of being a douchebag to the mods instead of actually talking baseball. That's some puzzling s***.
  20. I want to get excited about this team and rest of the season but this just seems like such a fool's errand with how many times they've disappointed us already.
  21. Oh great now you're comparing the board mods with Stalin. You have a real way of brightening things up around here. Oh how I missed the caustic banterings of the resident board malcontent.
  22. Anderson, Roark and and Garcia were all terrible washed up pitchers by the time they pitched with the Jays. You can attempt to polish a turd but in the end up you are left with is a shiny turd. Matz is another recent success story as he has turned around his career nicely under the tutelage of Walker. You can't blame Walker for all of Yates, Merryweather and Phelps being hurt and missing most if not all of the season. Chatwood was absolutely dealing before the sticky stuff crackdown. Romano and Mayza have both been developed into great late inning pitchers under Walker. Most of the failed bullpen guys have been waiver wire retreads, not sure if the pitching coach is to blame when guys who failed under other pitching coaches and get passed around through waivers ended up failing again as Blue Jays.
  23. You have to give Walker at least some credit for Ray's turnaround. He was a complete disaster in 2020 before going the Jays, and under Walker's tutelage he was able to turn things around to the point where he pitched well in the playoffs. Ray is having a career best season with a remarkable improvement in his ability to throw strikes, surely the pitching coach who he made this turnaround under deserves a lot of credit. There are several factors which seem to have led to Ray's awful 2020 season. He attempted to change his mechanics to more of a short arm motion and that failed miserably. One other thing I noticed was that his spin rates spiked up in 2020 compared to other years. Could this be as a result of the new mechanics or was he utilizing some sort of grip enhancing substance that season?
  24. Hendriks ascent to elite reliever is a very cool story. I remember him saying that after he moved to the bullpen he eventually decided he should simply try to throw harder and as a result saw his velocity jump a ton. Given that he already had great control this made for a deadly reliever combination.
  25. Bo and Vlad have basically played every day this season. I think with a little more time off it's possible they may be able to avoid becoming burned out in the future. Semien has much more experience with how to deal with playing every single day as he's been doing it for years.
