  1. My biggest beef with that proposed trade was saddling Kirk with Grichuk, as this ends up throwing away a good amount of value in order to save money. I don't think the Jays need to be giving away assets in trade in order to save cash, as they've shown the ability and willingness in the past to simply pay players to go away if necessary.
  2. Except maybe Grant77 who wants to trade Kirk for Brian Anderson and Anthony Bass.
  3. Suzuki has won several gold gloves so he will likely be a quality MLB defender straight away. He is reported to have a plus arm but is likely limited to the corners as his speed is likely closer to average.
  4. Just because Tsutsugo struggled doesn't indicate Suzuki is going to struggle. Tsutsogo already had high k rates against Japanese pitching so it's not at all suprising that he has faced a steep adjustment so far. Despite the early struggles he managed to have a very nice showing in Pittsburgh producing a 134 WRC+ in a 43 game showing. Suzuki shows much better plate discipline and walks about as much as he strikes out, while not swinging and missing very often either. His swing is reportedly compact so he has a very good chance to adjust to major league velocity as well. I tend to agree that it's unlikely the Jays are serious about landing him given the needs elsewhere on the roster, but if this front office has shown anything they are willing to upgrade the roster where ever possible and then worry about where all of the pieces fit later. Suzuki has a shot at being an very good player for a relatively small financial outlay, so there's a little risk involved but I think he would be a great addition.
  5. It's been reported that Kirk intends to once again work with the Jays strength and conditioning department this offseason to improve his physique. He reportedly lost a good chunk of weight last offseason so hopefully he can do the same again this winter.
  6. Suzuki is unproven yes but it's not like Gurriel has set the world on fire up to this point in his career as he's been super inconsistent and there's no guarantee he ever finally puts a full season together. Suzuki likely has a higher floor given his quality right field defence and MVP caliber stats in Japan, and likely has a higher ceiling as well given the fact he's such a well rounded player. If Gurriel could be moved as part of package for a need such as a quality infielder then the team would be that much stronger as a result.
  7. At the very least you would think Grichuk or Gurriel would be moved out as the team would have no need for five right handed outfieldera.
  8. That's an interesting possibility. I don't know if the Jays would entertain that type of move given that Gurriel finally started to look more comfortable in the outfield towards the end of the 2021 season. If he can regularly run decent routes he has the tools to be a really good left fielder.
  9. Grichuk being gone is good whether or not Suzuki is added to the roster. I wonder if a Suzuki addition could open the door to a potential Gurriel trade.
  10. Thanks, that makes way more sense as Bauer would need to have zero self awareness to actually tweet out something like that, especially given the fact that it seems even his Dodger teammates don't want him playing for the Dodgers moving forward.
  11. I guess blatantly cheating using sticky stuff to enhance spin rates doesn't violate Dodger standards.
  12. I looked through the twitter thread a little and it seems that he says since Bonds was on a likely hall of fame track before beginning PED usage he was easier to justify including here.
  13. He obviously doesn't care about PED use if he placed Bonds on his ballot, but why in the world has he not selected Clemens and A-Rod? All three were world class *******s who lied through their teeth about their steroid usage so it's hard to justify some sort of morality clause.
  14. Thames was always a pretty big dude to start with though, Espinal doesn't have that type of build naturally.
  15. I recalled that Grichuk's numbers for the season were largely propped up by a hot start to the season, where he produced a respectable 113 WRC+, which was followed by an extended stretch of futility. I decided to do a different comparison between the two, comparing their numbers over the last 4 months of the season after Grichuk had cooled off. It turned out that Grichuk was actually less valuable than JBJ during this stretch of games. From June until the end of the season in 252 plate appearances JBJ produced a 39 WRC+ but only was worth -0.3 WAR as he provided value defensively and on the bases. Comparatively in 337 plate appearances Grichuk produced a 66 WRC+ and was worth -0.5 WAR. A trade of these two players if this performances were to continue would have potentially been a pretty even deal for both sides, but Milwaukee would have been ending up with an extra year of a terrible player vs the single year that they would have been stuck with otherwise.
  16. I would have been less than thrilled about a Jackie Bradley Jr. acquisition. It's hard to fathom just how bad he was offensively last season. As frustrating as Grichuk was for a good chunk of 2021 Bradley Jr. was far worse. For players who received a minimum 400 plate appearances last season JBJ was the worst with a 35 WRC+ and produced the lowest WAR at -0.8 WAR. I think the only benefit would have been the fact that JBJ has one less year remaining on his contract, so if he were brought aboard and continued being terrible he could simply be released with the Jays only on the hook for one year of his salary vs. the 2 years remaining for Grichuk.
  17. Espinal's career WRC+ of 106 is higher than Wendle's career WRC+ of 103. This isn't exactly the clash of the titans here.
  18. Moreno has been practicing at third base extensively and gaining experience at third base in the AFL, and this is expected to continue during winter ball as well. He was obviously not going to be ready to man the position last season, but with more reps potentially to come in spring training there is a much greater chance he will be able to effectively man the position in 2022.
  19. Matz for an extra year at almost the same AAV would have been infinitely preferable in my view than spending this kind of money on Kikuchi on hopes that he might some day be good.
  20. Between DRS, OAA and UZR I think that we have enough different metrics available to get a decently accurate judgment on player defence.
  21. I don't think he's in any position to demand that type of contract based on his body of work up to this point. I think he made a mistake turning down the $13 million option personally as he's been mediocre at best up to this point in MLB.
  22. There's also potential for them to get essentially nothing out of this deal as well. Paxton hasn't really shown the ability to perform after the back surgery that he had previously, so piling a Tommy John on top of that just ups the risk.
  23. I'd be cool with any of the above, but with the additions of: (in order of preference) Ketel Marte Josh Donaldson Matt Chapman Kyle Seager (at this point it would likely make more sense to wait for Moreno)
  24. Charlie is going to need to find a new DB (designated bunter) to send up at totally inappropriate moments of the game.
  25. I just don't see Freeman ultimately fitting in the budget. Reports have him looking for 6 years and $180 million. The Jays wouldn't hand out a similar contract to a more impactful player in Semien so I just don't see them giving that to Freeman.
