I'd agree it's no surplus, but I'd still be into exploring the possibility of "selling high" on McGuire as an asset while bringing in a veteran back up catcher. Might even be able to get Betances for a bit less after a lost year. Definitely a worthy gamble in that range and one of the better upside buys remaining.

Some folks are pointing to the fact that Mazara is only 24 and may still have upside but he's also in his second last year of team control. Another mediocre season and they'd be struggling to get anything of value in return.

I'd have to imagine it was something pretty bad, it seemed like he was doing a great job in terms of the on ice product. Apparently it's not abuse related, I'm sure we'll hear more.

Seems like the Braves could have pooled some of this second tier money into buying another marquee talent or two, and filled the remaining openings later by bargain shopping or from within. Always easier said than done of course.
