Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports that Giants outfield prospect Gustavo Cabrera has elected to retire (Twitter links). As Baggarly chronicled in a harrowing story for the San Jose Mercury News in March 2016, Cabrera could have lost his right hand at 17. Then a vaunted prospect who had received a $1.3MM signing bonus a year prior, Cabrera was simply bracing his hand on a glass table as he bent to pick up a spilled glass of water, but he slipped on the wet floor and sent his arm crashing through the table, severing nerves and causing catastrophic damage. Baggarly details the frantic process of saving Cabrera’s limb and his ultimate return to the baseball field in a must-read story. As for Cabrera’s decision to retire, Baggarly notes that the physical challenges simply became too much for his reconstructed wrist/hand. He adds that while the Giants do have a recourse to claim a portion of that $1.3MM bonus due to Cabrera’s early retirement, the organization has no plans to do so. Best wishes to Cabrera in his post-playing days.

Can continue to add depth, but we have five guys who are obviously going to make up the starting rotation when healthy (Stroman, Sanchez, Happ, Estrada, Garcia). Also who are you suggesting as these supposed "good" starters remaining on the market? Only Cobb would represent an upgrade over what we already have.

Yeah I don't disagree, and myself I'm always in favor of just putting the best team possible on the field. But realistically, I feel like due to options and in the interest of maintaining depth (with Zeke having already been jettisoned), I have a feeling management will roll with the veterans to start the year.

I would be quite annoyed if Woodruff is available because I wanted to take him a lot earlier but saw he was listed as an owned prospect.

Greinke has only been able to ramp his fastball up to the mid 80s so far this spring, has to be concerning for the DBacks.

There isn't even a quote from Stroman to rip apart here. Obviously he isn't happy to not be out there on Opening Day, as you would expect from any competitor.

Can't disregard the fact that relievers are completely volatile and even great ones fall apart at the drop of a hat. It's so much better to fill a pen with inexpensive lottery tickets and then fortify as needed through the year, rather than spending big on relievers in the off season.

The Texas Rangers are pushing pitcher Matt Bush to add a changeup into his repertoire as he continues to stretch out into a starter. Bush had previously relied on a blazing 95-100 mph fastball with an 80 mph curve mixed in to keep hitters honest. Successful two pitch starters are rare, and the push to get Bush more comfortable using his changeup in games is a sign that they know this. For what it's worth, Evan Grant reports that the Rangers and manager Jeff Banister are impressed with the quality of his offering, it's just a matter of building up confidence. Out of 28 total pitches in a Sunday spring training outing, two were changes, which marks a significant increase in the usage of the pitch. This news shows that the Rangers appear to be serious about the Matt Bush in the rotation experiment. His progress is worth monitoring, as his fastball is truly a plus-plus pitch and the converted infielder could be a very intriguing player come draft time. He's currently being picked deep in the reserve rounds, 484th overall according to NFBC, so he wouldn't cost much to acquire. Texas has a dearth of talent in the rotation, and someone of Bush's talent could make noise if given the chance.

Bautista and Tampa were linked last off season as well and he lives nearby. If he signs anywhere that would seem to be the most likely fit.
