Right away drawn to the idea of adding a pair of Cardinals from near the top of the list. Brendan Donavan has the exact type of high contact approach and positional utility that would fit in so well with what we're doing here (or anywhere really for that matter). Sonny Gray would really solidify the top of the rotation behind Gaus and Trey, assuming we could get them to eat a sizable chunk of his 40M commitment. Looking at the FA market for starting pitching, I think there's the potential for a lot of mistakes to be made. Gray for one year at ~ 25 million seems like a much lesser risk than throwing that kind of money around on longer term deals in this pitching market.

This is infuriating, all he needed was an average lead and he's beating Smith's foot to the plate to win the game. Shouldn't have even slowed to slide (headfirst or not) but rather just sprinted through the plate like his life was on the line. -

I recall reading the same about his numbers falling off a cliff against velocity over 94MPH (it was from the MLBTR article about his posting) but they also did mention that it's a pretty small sample, he only saw about 200 pitches above that speed all season. Perhaps he'd simply adapt with more exposure against higher velocity, it seems like a legit concern though.

For a brief moment I didn't see Schneider listed (I still look for him in the INF rather than OF) and thought they had swapped him out for France. I wouldn't have been on board with that, but don't hate seeing France in the mix. He just seems like the type of battle tested veteran who comes up with the big clutch pinch hit AB in October

His savant profile is lit up about as bright red as you're going to see. The only exception being launch angle sweet spot %, which is probably the only thing that separates him from the guys that put up the truly gaudy HR totals. But in terms of being a pure hitter, he really has lived up to the 80 grade, he's among the upmost elite in terms of constantly driving the ball in play with authority. I went there just now to see the statcast numbers on that bizarre infield single last night, but he drove it into the ground at such a severe angle (-71° travelling just 1 foot) that the exit velocity didn't register.
