  1. Yeah continuing the trend of acquiring controllable players without giving up significant prospects has been encouraging. We still need some of our prospects to work out to be a contender, but as long as all of Vlad, Bo, Hernandez, Alford, Gurriel and Jansen aren’t busts then it’s looking promising for 2019 onwards. We might sneak a wildcard this year but IMO that’d only be a bonus.
  2. Pillar is the only guaranteed starter in the OF, isn’t paid very much, has only just turned 29, has been worth 9.5 WAR over the last 3 seasons, and is projected for 2.8 WAR this season. Giving him away in a trade would be incredibly bad roster management. Now if someone offers a decent return (e.g. a MLB ready starter +) then absolutely consider it, as once his defence goes he’s worthless. Realistically I don’t see anyone offering that, so his value is greater to us by staying.
  3. There was very little chance a team would sign a convicted paedophile then. Now that the #metoo movement has happened, there is a 0% chance - the backlash would be overwhelming.
  4. It would be awesome if Shatkins could manage to trade Morales. I think it’s unlikely though, whereas Pearce could probably bring back a small return of value. Maybe the Padres realise that signing Hosmer would be an overpayment and give us one of their surplus of relievers for Pearce.
  5. Yup. Unfortunately I can’t see anyone taking Morales contract without us eating salary or adding a prospect, so we might as well keep him and hope he improves IMO.
  6. Pearce is wasted as an outfielder. He’s blocked at 1B by a better player, and blocked at DH by a player with an almost unmovable contract. Hernandez instead of Pearce rotating with Carrera, Grichuk and Granderson in LF & RF has more upside. If Hernandez does well he becomes a starter, if he fails then Alford gets his chance.
  7. IMO Teoscar needs to be given a chance to start at this stage of his career to see if he can be a part of the future team. Neither of Pearce and Granderson will be here in 2019. The more I think about it, the more I’m leaning towards a Pearce trade. He no longer fits with the roster as it is IMO.
  8. I think Pearce is most likely to be traded unless the Giants are willing to offer something good for Pillar (they’re looking for a defensive CF).
  9. This also means that if one of Hernandez or Alford establish themselves this season, then Carrera is likely gone.
  10. I’m a bit surprised anyone thinks this is an overpayment. Greene profiles as a reliever and Leone is a non elite reliever who has as many negative WAR seasons as positive ones. Grichuk isn’t exactly an exciting acquisition but it hasn’t harmed the mid to long term team at all.
  11. 22 homers last year, perhaps Shatkins thinks his power can help.
  12. It isn’t 2014 anymore. Howard would be a risky acquisition who is likely to offset his rebounding skills with being a disruptive influence in the locker room, and is being paid $23.5m this season and next.
  13. Yeah exactly, it's part of an overall strategy. That strategy isn't for existing baseball fans, or even adult non baseball fans. It's for the kids who will be the next generation of sports fans. For a lot of people their first exposure to sport is at a game with their (usually) Dad - as a kid if you recognise a few of the players, and you're not too bored (i.e. it's not too long or have too many breaks) then there's a good chance you'll enjoy it and eventually become a fan. And soccer which IMO (obviously I'm biased) is the most fun to play, and requires the least amount of specialist equipment.
  14. Pretty much guarantee someone will forget and then get ejected for arguing when the pitcher is forced out of the game! Also some umpires will no doubt be very harsh - e.g. what if the SS fields a ball near the mound and then says something to the pitcher - by the letter of the law that could count as a visit.
  15. MLB plans to implement the following time saving rules after the players’ union rejects an agreement: 20 second pitch clock. Any time a coach, manager or player visits a pitcher on the mound, or a pitcher leaves the mound to confer with a player, it counts as a visit. Upon the second visit to the pitcher in the same inning, he must exit the game. 30 seconds between batters timer. From 2019 - six pitch maximum for warm-ups.
  16. I agree, but I'd point out that there isn't really any such thing as veteran dependability for non elite relievers. Pretty much every reliever is a wildcard, e.g. I don't think anyone would have predicted that Leone and Tepera would be our best relievers in 2017 outside of Osuna, and J.P. Howell would be so bad that he was DFA.
  17. Yeah 7th bullpen by WAR in 2017. OK there's no Joe Smith anymore, but that's offset by the awful Bolsinger and past it Grilli no longer being here. Outside of Osuna it's OK, some players will be good, some will suck - but that's what relievers do!
  18. The title fooled me and no one in the UK would ever say "sent to the Rangers" when referring to the Scottish Russell Martin. UK teams are singular i.e. it would be "loaned to Rangers".
  19. Yeah and Posey has also been almost universally recognised as the best catcher in the league for a few years now.
  20. Estrada says he struggled with stress last season (especially when there were rumours of him being traded):
  21. Pearce might be easier to move at the deadline, but I'd hope we're exploring trades for him now. IMO moving Loup or Carrera for minimal savings isn't worth it, unless their replacements are significantly better (e.g. if we signed a starting caliber OF).
  22. While it's obviously not just you, I disagree. You only get one career. If you have signed a contract with a team that either is successful or ambitious, and then the team either enters a rebuild or trades you to a rebuilding team, it's understandable that you'd want to leave. If you are good enough that most teams would want you then it even makes sense that a trade would suit both the team and player (obviously that's debatable with Starlin Castro).
  23. It'd be a great signing if we could get Cobb for that. He was rumoured to have turned down three years $42m from the Cubs, but if no one is going to offer him a higher AAV then maybe the extra year would entice him to sign.
