    I think boy wonder gives a pretty good summary of what most of us are trying to convey here with this thread ... some more articulate than others. Coming off a 97 win season, knocking out 98 and 100 win teams only to be swept by a 90 win team, I'd think he brings a pretty good perspective 24 hours after the "depths of despair" as he puts it... cliff notes: Playoffs are a crap shoot; best team doesn't always win. It's about peaking at the right time. All you can do is to build a team that's good enough to keep knocking at the door each year and hope that at some point, the door will open btw, babcock said similar things in his introductory press conf back in May; used a similar analogy IIRC or maybe i'm mixing the two but essentially same idea http://www.csnchicago.com/cubs/cubs-theo-epstein-compares-mets-tidal-wave

    we've got our 2 aces going, they've got their's. Bring it on. If they beat us on the mound, then be it. Like BC said, this has been a heck of a season. How they fought and battled in Gm 5. Estrada giving us a shot. Whereever he'll be next year, I won't forget that gutsy performance. A champion can still go down but they go down swinging. Either way I am very proud to call myself a fan!

    Are people saying that Hendriks should start because of his velo? Has he shown any secondary pitches either when he was a starter or coming out of the pen? If that's all he has, a 98 fastball doesn't go very far in this league

    I'll concede that the best team doesn't always win in the playoffs but I would think it's pretty obvious that we have a flawed line-up with some parts (like SP) that are more glaring than others Yeah there is no way to guarantee anything as far as playoffs goes but it is the job of management to remove/limit/minimize weakness and holes in our lineup with the $ that we have - just like every other team in the league

    Agree about the walks. With a team like Royals who seemingly are the masters of small ball, BBs are going to be his and the likely the team's undoing...

    At first, I thought this was their MO - getting contacts and somehow finding holes. But then looking at the reg season, they are only a little bit better than the Jays (.301 vs .298). They are not even in the top 10 Only hope that they won't be so lucky for the rest of the series...

    I don't know about the boy scout part - maybe in baseball but I don't see it in the other professional teams that we have. What I have noticed is that we care a LOT about how other cities view our team or athletes. I don't get it and maybe it's because I haven't lived in TO for a while now. At the end of the day, who cares if they are good people or not as long as they perform and deliver. When we go out to a movie, do we think about whether the actor/actress are "good" people or liked? We pay our money, they deliver a good performance and we all go home happy. Athletes = Entertainers Nothing more. Nothing less.

    I was just surprised at the stuff that Volquez had. I watched him pitched more when he was with the Reds and it didn't make an impression on me that he had this kind of stuff but I was definitely surprised in Gm1. Not only did he have the velocity, but also the location and he was painting around the outer edges of the zone. Even in the last reg season series, even though with all the extra ciriculars and Donaldson saying he was "good hittin", the fact is that the Jays didn't hit him as hard as you thought. IIRC, Reyes had a couple of hits and there were a bunch of walks.

    So just curious what are they saying about Volquez? His performance last night was masterful. I was on the road so catching bits and pieces of it on my phone. From what I saw, it seems he was around the strike-zone a lot, even with his balls. Do they think it's just luck or is he just pitching to his capability?

    I think it is very difficult to interpret his real intention. There are some on the board that are convinced based on what he said/didn't say that he was letting Goins take all the blame, even though it was deserved. This seem to support what you are saying What I do agree with is that Bautista is somewhat douchey throughout his career, whether it'd be pimping HRs, arguing with umps, etc. And I've discovered that I want some of these douchey guys on my team. I don't know whether I would want a whole team of Martin (i.e. gentleman, always PC, nice guy, etc)

    i'm not sure if yost had anything to do with it but i thought one of the key plays in the 7th was Hosmer either stealing/hit-and-run; there was some confusion on our part between Tulo and Goins. either way, looking at the replay if hosmer hadn't taken 2nd, that sure looked like a DP

    i have to tip my hat off to you guys watching this; after watching our game, i couldn't stand watching another baseball game; i'm not as sick as after game 2 of the texas series but pretty darn close...

    agreed on not bartman this play and price s***ing the bed as for gibby, i agree with him that up to that point, Price has earned and showed that he can get out of the inning based on how he has done in the previous 6. so it was his game to win/loose. however even if you give into the benefit of hindsight, i think gibby is still going to screw things up because if he would have pulled Price, he most likely would bring in Sanchez with runners on and once again, we have a pitcher miscasted for the situation

    i don' know if that's what BTS is saying ... It was Goins ball all the way, in Goins' mind and JB's mind; the only point is that being the leader, he should have stuck up for Goins and take one for the team effectively

    I really think JB is one of those guys that you absolutely hate if he was on the other team; i think it's the edge that motivates him and it's what makes him a great player; given that and looking at the replay multiple times, I tend to agree that in _his_ mind, there was no confusion. He actually slowed down to let Goins have space and time to catch it. I tend to agree though that being the veteran and leader of the team, he maybe should have "taken one for the team" but to call him a goat is too much...

    Agreed. I know everyone is piling on Price but I am not one of them. If he wants to be a thoroughbred, he has to stop the bleeding right there. No excuse. There's no doubt he has some forms of yips here in the playoffs. But then did the Royals hit him hard? I don't think so. I feel much better Price getting the ball again in the series than when they called him out of the pen in the Texas series (and got hit hard)
