    Really? He took over a mediocre team with a high payroll and an awful farm system. He cleared payroll and rebuild the farm system while exploiting loop holes in the CBA. He took chances on some failed prospects and on the breakouts by JB + EE. knowing the EE/JB era and cheap contracts was coming to an end, he spent the last 2 seasons selling off the prospects to make a run at the playoffs - which was successful and something that rejuvenated the fan base. Then he bailed, knowing full well it wasn't sustainable. That's as straight forward of a plan as it gets man.

    Meh - there were a lot of good things he did before "selling the farm". He managed to unload Vernon Wells (a small miracle really). He exploited loop holes in the CBA to drastically improve the farm system. I loved his moves to get Brandon Morrow, Travis and of course JD. I like the risks he took to sign EE and JB long term. We don't know what would have happened if he didn't make the Dickey / Florida deals...and I was on this board before those happened (and perhaps wasn't nearly as educated about baseball either)....but was he considered to be complete dog s*** before those 2 moves by most on this board? Just curious.

    Davis and Holland were both rather pedestrian last year and both were awful in the 2nd half. It's possibility they realize how fickle RP'ing is, accept their bodies may be failing them and know this is their last chance to cash in. If they continue the slide this year, they could be looking at 3 or 4 more years in the bigs, working off shorter contracts with lower AAV's. It might look like this....17M + 4($6M) = $41M Dave Cameron is predicting Davis gets 4 years, $68M and that Holland gets 3 years, $45M. Pencil in a final year for Davis at $5M and an extra 2 for Holland at $10M for comparison purposes. If I'm in that position, I'm looking for guaranteed money all day long. I'd rather take the pay day and potentially leave $10-20M in career earnings on the table than take the risk that I'll remain healthy and effective....especially when dominant, deep bullpens are all the rage right now.

    Except Stroman wasn't better in 2017 than he was in 2016, unless you measure by wins and ERA - which I don't.

    Stro's FIP was 3.90 (3.59 xFIP) last year, but is 3.57 for his career. His career BB/9 is 2.40, which isn't 'nearly' 3....you're really stretching it man. But I get it, you like him and there are Coors factors that are hard to predict. The guy throws hard (94 MPH avg fastball last year) and gets lots of ground balls. I love that, but he needs to throw A LOT more strikes for me...he's certainly an option, but I couldn't imagine giving him a 4 or 5 year deal. You don't lock up 5th starters that long.

    Am I looking at the wrong career 'away' splits? K/9 - 6.11 BB/9 - 4.02 FIP - 4.19 xFIP - 4.40 I don't get it personally. I never get excited about guys who've walked more than 4 per 9 innings for their career - especially with such a low K/9....4.69 BB/9 last year - barf.

It tells the tail of how Roy bought 60 custom watches for everyone on the team following his perfect game. It talks about how he insisted the "4 aces" be dubbed the "5 aces" and that Joe Blanton be included in everything.

Charlie changed his delivery to mimic Doc, which turned around his career and obviously just lead to Morton closing out the World Series in an absolutely dominating performance.

    I'll never forget that Friday night. I was at my good friends house for dinner. Just as we were finishing up I remember the Phillies first playoff game was on and that Doc was pitching. I remember being a little embarrassed that I'd forgotten the game was already on (knowing full well I wanted to see Doc's first playoff start), as we finished up and moved on to the couch to flip on the game I casually said - "Doc's probably throwing a no-hitter", because, well, he was awesome. I think we flipped it on in about the 6th inning and low and behold - Doc was throwing a no-hitter. Glued to the screen for the remainder of the game I remember being so happy for him when Ruiz somehow got that ball to first (after tripping on the bat and falling). Another great Doc moment I'll never forget.

    I have to share this story of Doc. I was in line at an autograph session in Dunedin probably 10 years ago now. The lady in front of me had this blown up picture of Doc in a blue golf shirt - it was huge - and when we got to him, she asked him to sign it. Doc was a little embarrassed at this large, rather random picture of him and he asked her where she got this picture of him and she said she took it at this same event last year. The player sitting beside Doc (Aaron Hill maybe) pointed out that Doc was wearing the exact same blue golf shirt again that day (that he wore to the event last year) and burst out laughing. It sure was a pleasure meeting Doc. I was star struck, yet he was completely down to earth. RIP

    So my wife is out at the movies tonight and I'm home alone with my 3 boys. I just had to explain to my 5 and 7 year old that Daddy was very sad because his favourite pitcher died in a plane crash. My 7 year old asked me why he was my favourite pitcher and I went on a 30 minute nostalgic trip about how great he was, not only as a pitcher, but as a person. He was EXACTLY the type of player kids like him should idolize. I told him about when I got to meet Doc and how I have his autograph. I told them how life is short and to be good to one another. I just got them to bed and watched Sportnet, which was showing clips from PTS with Zauny and then a round table with Campbell and Brunt and they were showing pictures of Doc with the sad music on and I just finish crying like a baby, all my myself (I think when the lead singer of your favourite band dies and your favourite pitcher/blue jays dies - you start to realise how old you are - and that's sad). I love reading all the great post about Doc on this board and somehow, I feel better now.

    Anyone else crying a little bit? I am. Grown f***ing man in an office with some tears in his eyes. Baseball is a beautiful sport and Doc was the f***ing best.

    Yeah that original report is updated now. HOLIDAY, Fla. - Eight-time All-Star and two-time Cy Young award winner Roy Halladay died Tuesday after his plane crashed into the Gulf of Mexico. He was 40. Halladay's ICON A5 light sport aircraft crashed 10 miles west of St. Petersburg at about 1 p.m., the Pasco County Sheriff's Office said. RIP Roy. You were the best. Now who cut the f***ing onions here in the office ffs?

    Man I urn for the day my kids are old enough to play video games like this. I haven't touched by PS3 since my first son was born 7 years ago. He's right at the age where I could probably introduce it to him - but honestly, I'm going to resist the urge and keep him away from video games as long as I can (knowing that he'll probably love them when he finally does get into them). At this point, I'd rather go play baseball with him outside...but I know playing video games WITH him is going to be awesome when we finally get to that point.
