  1. I think between Grichuk, Alford and Hernandez - there is a strong probability that one of them is a solid starting OFer and a decent probability that there's 2 amongst that group.
  2. https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/blue-jays-continue-sneaky-good-offseason-with-jaime-garcia/ This article pretty much sums up what most on here have been noting all off season.
  3. What do we think about Barnes? his 1st half was really good (10.3 K/9, 2.77 BB/9, 3.11 FIP), but he was hot garbage in the 2nd half. Did he wear down? or did hitters adjust? I never really thought of him as being on the bullpen bubble, but overall, he wasn't good last year when you look at the full package. I'd like to see him spin the ball a bit more.
  4. He almost missed his son being born over $100K? unreal. That is a bizarre situation.
  5. What "negative" things do we think a team would say about a player during an arbitration case? Don't they just sight the facts and comparable players/contracts?
  6. I liked that idea of trading him to the Brewers for Hiura, Phillips, Burnes and Ray (or something like that...maybe Santana in there)
  7. We lost a lifelong Blue Jays fan today. My father-in-law lost his battle with cancer this morning at age 72. He's been my "father" for over half my life now (been with my wife for 19 years). While there was a stark difference in our views of baseball - we will forever be connected by our love for the Jays.
  8. He's so thirsty for attention. It's embarrassing.
  9. Angels are going to use a 6 man rotation this year.
  10. I went to the Twins stadium in Fort Myers last year. It's been renovated and I thought it was gorgeous FWIW.
  11. +1. At least they're still a good resource for the stats themselves.
  12. Just as long as it's not Barker please...pretty please?
  13. Good article on Doc and the HOF. https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/roy-halladay-isnt-just-a-borderline-hall-of-famer/ In this - I discovered Rube Waddell. The man averaged over 7 K/9 in the early 1900's, which was unheard of in that time. 8.39 K/9 in 1903 over 324 innings is crazy awesome.
  14. A good comment in response: "This is the article I’ll have in mind when I let my membership lapse. I don’t mean that as an attack on the author, who I commend for engaging with readers below. Nor as a disparagement of his approach to baseball – there are an infinite number of ways to enjoy the sport, and I’m glad he has found one that works for him – but it’s just not for me. More specifically, it strikes me as undifferentiated from the overwhelming majority of sports content I can find online, and that’s not what I have come to FanGraphs for. “Who cares where you are on the win curve?” and “Chicks dig the long ball!” are obviously perfectly valid perspectives – but they are ubiquitous. An angle that I can get from ESPN, or Yahoo Sports, or a seemingly infinite breadth of sites across the internet. Heck, I could go back and read old Mike Lupica and Dan Shaughnessy articles (or new ones, if they are still alive and writing about baseball). I personally love baseball both on the field AND off the field; I enjoy thinking about a franchise over the long term – including things like the allocation of finite resources, player value versus player cost, etc. And from a less wonky angle, as a fan I DON’T want my team to “just go for it” every year. I appreciate that moving from 77 wins to 81 wins doesn’t increase my enjoyment of the game if it comes at the cost of a move from 84 to 89 wins next year. For a long time, FanGraphs has been a great place to read about the sport from that analytical angle. That is clearly changing. I had been thinking that some of the recent articles were just frustrated, overwrought responses to a slow off-season. But this is different; this is an explicit choice to hire a writer whose first article, to me, turns away from what I have enjoyed most about the site. I don’t mean for this to sound petty, and from the comments and votes below, it appears I may be in the minority. That’s good; I hope the people who work here find success and the remaining readers find enjoyment. In the same way I don’t begrudge a franchise owner who runs his/her team to maximize long-term success, I don’t begrudge Appelman if this is what he has to do to maximize ad revenue. Online content publishing is a brutally tough business, and maybe the previous content has proven too nichey and a more boilerplate approach is the answer financially. But I’ll just make one tiny vote with my wallet and look to dedicate my support elsewhere. The internet is a hydra, and in the same way that FanGraphs’ audience may have initially sprung from what Baseball Prospectus became in the first few years post Nate Silver, I am hopeful this post-Cameron FanGraphs may ultimately open an outlet elsewhere for analytically-inclined authors to flourish. Until then – So long, and thanks for all the fWAR."
  15. I agreed, but unfortunately, the call in show's already made him into this know-it-all who most the average fan hates (think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that). It's going to take a long time to change that opinion. If he's named the successor to Jerry, I suspect there will be a significant backlash from fans.
  16. We should have a thread dedicated to recording all the stupid things that Buck and Tabby say during the season. I typically background watch the Jays games and I swear I catch Buck and Tabby say a couple of stupid things every game.
  17. Did he suggest Sanchez take a pay cut for his s*****, injury plagued 2017 season?
  18. Seems to me it can't be that difficult to find someone with a smooth voice who's able to describe what he's seeing, tell a few stories about the game and acknowledge that advanced metrics/stats exist and have changed the way we view the game. You don't need to regurgitate the players fangraph page, but would it kill them to simply say the advanced stats, exit velocity and the frequency in which he barrels the baseball in particular, made Randel Grichuk a trade target for the Blue Jays. They hope that by making adjustments to his approach and pitch selection at the plate that they can tap into some unrealized potential. The numbers show this is a player who barrels the baseball in the upper 10% of all major league players and thus if they can cut down on his swing and miss tendencies, they could really have a valuable player on their hands.
  19. Is there anyone you like calling games in Toronto? (excluding Shulman)
  20. This is incredibly unpopular, but I don't mind Wilner calling games. I appreciate that he sticks to the facts. My biggest complaint about Buck and Tabby is they seemingly make s*** up on a regular basis. "Oh look, there's Jose talking to Travis about hitting again. Jose is always looking to mentor and help the young players learn the nuances of hitting". FFS Buck, you have no idea what they are talking about. It's just as likely they are talking about the whore they tag teamed last night.
  21. He has on-going issues with his voice. A sad day. He was great.
  22. Nice - if you go to that game, let me know and I'll buy you a beer. I've been to Dunedin a few times and (unless they've done a lot of reno's lately) it's not a great park. I'm looking forward to seeing a few different stadiums this year (also going to Bradenton to see the Pirates).
  23. Jays @ O's March 8th? I'm going to that game. I've never been to Sarasota myself. Looking forward to it
  24. But the Owners are colluding and ruining baseball. Right.
