  1. Well ofcourse variance dictates that the end result won't be close to the projections but my point was more in terms of how close the teams were in current talent.
  2. Just checked again, the top 3 in the AL East is now separated by 0.4 games, that is crazy, this could be the closest 3 way division race in a while. http://www.fangraphs.com/coolstandings.aspx
  3. because the division is ridiculously tight, the projections have the Red Sox, Jays and Orioles separated by ~1.5 games. This is a classic case of how important marginal gains are, you can actually afford to overspend in money and prospects because it will pay off. I especially hope Rogers is willing to take on salary, that way you can get something decent on the market without trading Pompey et al. And if trading a guy like Pompey or Tellez gets you a long term piece that will also make you better this year then you gotta consider it.
  4. That's the crazy part, he's being treated like a failure without actually being given a chance to fail. He has a higher career wRC+ than Pillar, SSS and all. And the the projections have them as pretty equivalent hitters. Pompey has a chance to be an everyday contributor if he can play good defence and there are reasons to believe he can. So the idea that he's worthless is based on no evidence.
  5. Good defence will play anywhere. It is possible to be a productive corner outfielder if you're only wRC+ing like 90 which is where the projections have him as long as you can make it up with defence. edit: the median offensive production in left field this year is only 95 wRC+. The idea that you need offence first players in the corner outfields is a myth from another era. If Pompey hits to his projections he would rank as the ~20th best offensive left fielder and he has a chance of being a top 5 defender. http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=lf&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2016&month=0&season1=2016&ind=0&team=0,ts&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&sort=16,d
  6. Even if they were inclined to trade Pompey et al the Jays don't have a lot of payroll flexiblity to take back salary. I don't agree with it but Rogers has set a certain number for teh 2016 season and the Jays don't have a lot of wiggle room.

I agree we shouldn't bash Durant, its the NBA's fault super teams even happen in the first place. Having said that, there is something to be said for the idea that just pursuing championships regardless of how you get them isn't commendable. Achievements aren't measured in a vaccum, their worth is determined by what you put into them and how hard it was to get there. Joining a 73 win team and winning a championship is not that laudable of an achievement not only for KD but for the other Warrior stars. And please lets not compare them to the Heat big 3 or the Celtics Big 3. Its not a fair comparison at all, Lebron joined Wade on teh tail end of his career and that Heat team didn't have anywhere near the depth of GS, same thing with the Celtics

A full strength GS team probably won't lose a game all season. What a joke the NBA has become when a top 3 player feels the need to join a 73 win team. If they do win, it will be the most meaningless title in history

I'm not a fan of DeRozan at all but the way the NBA is right now, he's not even a bad contract
  10. Why would he even have to think about planning for a replacement bum like Colabello? Release him and be done with it, if you put him on the 25 man Gibbons will keep giving him playing time.

There's always a bias against skilled bigs who don't have out of the world athleticism but just get it done. I like the pick, the analytics say he is extremely efficient and skills wise he has what you want in a big man, good hands and a good motor.
  12. And Jose's dropping numbers aren't just bad luck with BABIP or HR/FB, his exit velocity has dropped a little bit, he was 7th in the league last year and his current number would put him around 25. So he hasn't collapsed completely but there's a real decline. In addition to not hitting the ball as harder there's a dramatic drop off in his launch angle, he's not elevating the ball like he used to.
  13. He's basically a kid too, its kind of sad to see.
  14. I don't know why you can't be both, by analyst i simply meant a data and analytics based writer whose work i most respect.

The reason i say Whiteside isn't a true anchor is because a true all around defensive player does more than act as a lane intimidator. In today's NBA pick and roll defence is as important as protecting the rim on drives, he's also slow on rotations and doesn't have the overall instincts on defence that someone like Marc Gasol does. Having said all that, he's truly elite at blocking shots and altering shots, that's a valuable and rare skill. JV right now has become a much better defender on the pick and roll, its really noticeable in the post season compared to previous years. His 1 v 1 defence against other bigs is okay but his shotblocking presence and other aspects of help defence need to get better.

You're right that blocks aren't everything but he is an intimidating presence around the rim and he alters a lot of shots. OTH, he's not an "anchor" like Marc Gasol and can't be relied on all aspects of defence.

I dunno, i think both teams break even. Whiteside is a monster, yes JV has done decently 1 v 1 against him but its not that lopsided of a matchup and Whiteside is miles ahead as a help defender. The way i see it the Heat take a huge hit defensively and a small hit offensively, the Raps take a small hit defensively and its a decent sized hit offensively. JV has improved as a pick and roll defender but he just isn't there yet as a shot blocking presence. Without Whiteside its open season around the rim for the Raps, Lowry and co should be able to take advantage of that.

His struggles against the Pacers was understandable given George was on him but the Heat don't have the kind of defender that DeRozan struggles against. The Raptors are going nowhere if DeRozan and Lowry keep this up

    NBA Thread

Yeah the Heat look terrible, the Raptors can still win if atleast one of Lowry or DeRozan come alive. Whiteside and Dragic are criminally underused, Spoelstra's system is worse than Casey's somehow

yikes that was terrible, how about a pick and roll and get something going towards the rim?

Rather risk an OT, the offence is much more fluid today than it was yesterday, they can win in OT
