  1. No it isn't, With projections and common sense you'll have a rough estimation of which teams are contenders and which teams are not. The Jays will have the same rotation and an offensive core consisting of Donaldson-Martin-Travis-Pillar-Tulowitzki. That's a contending team with some additions. I'm not sure how that's an aging roster at all, its probably around average. Sanchez is one of the best young pitchers in baseball and Travis is one of the best young position players in baseball, those two alone form a very good "young" core. And the oldest player in that core in Martin who is only 33, which isn't that old at all. I don't subscribe to this obsession some fans have with getting younger. Many a franchise have dreamed on young players delivering and got nothing from them. Having a great farm system is fun because you can dream on them but they're not a substitute for actual wins on the field.
  2. This isn't fantasy baseball though, no contending team sells players off the big league roster to try and "sell high" and "win" trades, and given the importance of marginal wins trades like that rarely work out.
  3. why, you don't like the Jays being competitive in 2017 which they will be even if they lose every single FA?
  4. I think he means in the offseason. And teh answer is no BTW, the Jays under no circumstances will contemplate a rebuild of any kind. People are vastly overestimating the offseason losses, even if they lose all of EE, Bautista, Saunders and Dickey they still have an excellent core to be competitive. The Red Sox will probably be better but the Jays won't be far behind.
  5. why not, if pitchers like Quintana and Hamels are in the conversation then he should be too, their DIPS numbers look mediocre too.
  6. lol, no one forces the owners to give out these huge contracts. Its part of the risk they knowingly take on.
  7. We're only thinking that because it didn't work out, that's the benefit of hindsight. At the time he was a relatively very young FA who despite his weight had a perfect health record. All FA contracts in general are "bad contracts" but Fielder's youth and lack of injury history should have counted in his favor just as much as his weight should have counted against him.
  8. well, i'll defer to the science if that's true. Is that a trend in baseball among hitters, a correlation between spine related injuries and weight that have a sudden onset?
  9. to be fair Boras wasn't wrong about that, and his neck problems are probably unrelated to his weight, could happen to anyone.
  10. Travis has put up superstar/franchise cornerstone numbers in his career so far, 4.7 WAR in just 120 games. Obviously the projections don't expect him to keep this up(offensively and defensively) but the hype compared to what he's done so far is completely deserved, if anything he's very underhyped.
  11. A 3-1 series with a run differential of +3, the pitching came through obviously but the we got quite a few breaks.
  12. SMoak is absolutely useless
  13. how dare you, do you have any idea how hard it is to find league average hitters who can't play a position?
  14. lol, so that's how Smoak finds a way to be productive
  15. Is this supposed to be a bold stance or something? 150 innings is a lot, its hard to take the over on almost any reliever.
  16. Nor is there much hunger among players. They don't get paid and there isn't much interest in the "representing your country" aspect. Even in the NBA where there's a rich history of players participating the Olympics a lot of the stars are not showing much interest anymore.
  17. I think its a complete nonstarter actually. There is nothing in the Olympics for the owners or the PA.
  18. I don't know if comparables really tell us anything. His numbers are solid enough to take him seriously as a prospect, nothing about him makes you go WOW but there's no obvious red flag anywhere. Like someone said before AA will be the real test.
  19. People make way too much of the Jays impending FA losses. Travis, Donaldson, Pillar, Tulowitzki and Martin are a very good position player core. You can fill the other positions around them with players that don't break the bank and still be a competitive team overall. The Red Sox are in a better position than us but i still don't see how the Jays won't atleast be only a couple of games behind them and a strong WC contender.
  20. Devon Travis has reached 4 WAR now in just 114 career games. Yes, the projections(both offensive and defensive) think he isn't as good as his career numbers suggest but he's put up franchise cornerstone numbers so far, you can't take that away from him.
  21. or he's just coming back down to earth, over his career he has been the definition of an average hitter, wRC+ of 99.
  22. how long before Barnes becomes the go to 8th inning guy?
  23. yeah, and i'd rather go to them to preserve a 2 run lead
  24. I guess we'll agree to disagree, very few starters are worth sending out their in the 7th inning, Dickey is not one of them. It doesn't matter how he's looked so far, things can go south in a hurry.
  25. Dickey out for the 7th to face the Astros third time through lineup, also a pitcher who relies almost exclusively on knuckleball velocity for his effectiveness. Gibbons is a manager from another decade, there's a reliever revolution that's going in baseball and he's blissfully unaware. Even with our mediocre bullpen this is a bad move
