    which is pretty crazy considering he can legitimately demand more money. He's 2 yrs younger, just as good of a hitter, more durable and the defensive value they provide is a wash.

    Thole is good enough for what he's supposed to do, by definition backups aren't supposed to be good, otherwise you'd be misallocating resources. We gave Martin quite a workload last year, if there isn't a plan to scale that back significantly there's no point in investing in a good backup.

    Cyborg is 100% right, unless Cespedes has a disaster of a season or is injured he will decline. A 3 WAR season would set him up for a more lucrative contract than 2/50, he'd be 31 years old, he'd want a 5 year deal. There will still be a market for him even if he takes a significant step back from 2015, it makes no sense to settle for a 2 year deal.

    but i think he's gonna opt out unless he has a terrible year. If he has the kind of season he's had before 2015, around 3 WAR, it still might make sense to test the market.

    Yeah, i'm sure 2 of the 10 best hitters in all of Baseball (and by far the best hitters available in FA)will settle for a barely above league average salary.

    Edwin is 2 and 1/4th years younger than Bautista, and he's just as good of a hitter, 149 vs 146 wRC+ in the last 4 years. You can also make the case that Encarnacion is more durable, and don't forget he's absurdly consistent. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if Edwin got more money if they both hit the market. Yes there will obviously be the DH penalty but he has a lot going for him and at this point the league knows Bautista is a liability in the outfield.

    Jonathan Lucroy even with his injury problems, put up the same WAR as Martin did in the last 4 years. He's arguably a better catcher if you believe staying healthy isn't a skill. And someone can correct me if i'm wrong but he's also as good if not a better framer. So like Cyborg said, not a good a way to make the most of your resources at hand.

    Sanchez isn't very bright, another reason its unlikely he'll ever fix his command problems to enough of a degree to be a starter.

    Is this happening with non Jays players as well? The higher than normal inflation we're seeing might be creeping into the arbitration process a little bit too.

    Hendricks is a better asset to have then Chavez, i hated that deal the day it was made and still do. Just watch what Beane will get for Hendricks in a year or two(with 30 saves or holds under his belt), i would be shocked if he doesn't get two times as what we got for him.

    There are no moves because the Jays have no money left to spend in the offseason. The trade front is quiet because teams usually want to wait and see how the FA market develops.

    He inherited a team that was good in 2015. I guess it depends on what the word contender means right. We weren't better than Boston even before the Price signing and we weren't significantly better than the NYY either, if i remember the projections correctly. The Jays had a shot at the division(and still do) but Shapiro wasn't left with a 95 win team that had a high chance of winning the division, which is how i would define contender.

    Seriously if someone like BTS was hurling insults its somewhat understandable. I don't think i ever read anything insightful from Grant and yet he's acting like he's a great poster who shouldn't be questioned.

    When i said kiddies i was referring to the level of competition more than the age which really isn'tt great, something that a college pitcher should be able to handle. If you think a 4.02 FIP(forget the 6 ERA) and a 1.5 K to BB ratio against that competition was not concerning and doesn't mean anything when it comes to predicting his future than we'll agree to disagree.

    I think i also remember someone saying that that RC in the summer would be unbearably hot and humid with the grass installed. Probably need a new AC and dehumidifying system too.

    Its not just the grass. The modifications that have to be made to the stadium to put it in are huge. All that concrete has to be dug up and they have to install brand new drainage and ventilation systems. Its a big and expensive engineering project. And apparently 200 million dollars is on the low end of the estimate, it could be as high as 400 million.

    Given the way the Rogers Centre is built it is a pipedream in the sense that it will cost somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 million dollars. Beeston flat out mislead the fans and the public about the logistics of it. That's a quarter of the overall cost(or more) for a brand new stadium, there was never any reason to believe it was going to happen. Rogers would have never spent quarter of a billion dollars on a 30 year old facility just to install grass.

    no it isn't, 36 innings might not be a lot if you already have a long track record and a solid guess as to how good a player is. We don't have that with Jon Harris other than his college numbers. Its very unlikely that Jon Harris is a good pitcher and those 36 innings of awful performance against NWL competition is just variance.

    I'm worried for him though, he hasn't had much of a honeymoon period and there's not a lot of goodwill towards him from casual fans. People like Griffin are openly criticizing him just a couple of months in, that didn't happen to AA even years after his failures.     Is anyone else loving the honesty from Shapiro? Its so refreshing to have someone just respect the fans and acknowledge that we're not idiots.

    Urena's numbers scream HR/FB% aberration, he had more HR's than doubles in the MWL and only 1 HR in 128 PA in the FSL. People should be skeptical of his power.
