  1. what happened to the BJMB draft night live stream?
  2. D-Backs with Carroll, Walston, Malone, and Jameson to start their night. If they sign all 4 of them that's an amazing draft.
  3. My favorite position players still on the board that would be good value at pick 52: College: Kamerson Misner, Davis Wendzel Prep: Gunnar Henderson, Tyler Callihan, Rece Hinds, Sammy Siani, Matthew Lugo
  4. Matt Allan, Brennan Malone, Kameron Misner fell out of the 1st round. First round is complete. Some top prep pitchers still on the board for teams rich in bonus pool: Matthew Allan, Brennan Malone, JJ Goss, Jack Leiter, Hunter Barco, Bryce Osmond, Matthew Thompson, Josh Wolf, Jimmy Lewis Some college pitchers on the board: Matt Canterino, Tommy Henry, Seth Johnson, Drey Jameson, John Doxakis, Ryan Zeferjahn, Noah Song, T.J. Sikkema, Graeme Stinson, Ryne Nelson
  5. Anyone staying up for the second round pick? Lots of interesting names and scenarios here. Rounds 2-5 is where a good scouting department can really pay off.
  6. He was a reliever in college and made him a starter in his junior season. Has basically been the top college righty in this year’s class (sans the game he got rocked pitching against Lodolo’s team). It looks like Atkins went for need here instead of BPA but I will withhold judgement until we see him pitching in our system. With guys like Carroll there could be signability issues so we really never know what’s happening behind the scenes, maybe Arizona offered him a truck of money.
  7. Now is the part where the draft starts to go mayhem, top 6 is pretty straight forward in whatever order teams prefer
  8. There’s no question Vaughn can hit. 60/60 tool bat might even be conservative. I think Casey Mize would be pleased to have some run support behind him
  9. Bleday is a seriously good bat and found some real power this season. College numbers are off the charts. Not shocked Marlins passed on C.J. Abrams but I think whoever takes him is getting some serious upside. You don’t see guys with 75 grade speed that can hit and play SS like that, at that age, very often. Tigers / Padres probably getting a steal (figuratively and literally) here. Like Abrams probably has enough upside to be top 3 if drafted last year.
  10. I’m sneaking a moment away from work to see who we drafted. Disappointed to find out they’re still on the 5th pick.
  11. What’s the success rate / correlation of buck teeth and career fWAR?
  12. Brett Baty looks like a dork btw, if we’re drafting based on facial peripherals
  13. We forgot the most important time stamp: 37:39 - Alan died for this podcast
  14. I agree. We’re seeing guys like Riley Adams breaking out. Cullen Large, Nate Pearson, Patrick Murphy having a healthy season. Forrest Wall and Santiago Espinal doing well and maybe getting bumped to triple-A soon. double-A NH current houses our most talented rotation, which could be 1-2 year away from big club impact. Groshans, Kirk, and Moreno destroying projections in the lower minors. Surprising pitching performances from guys like Josh Winckowzki and Nick Allgeyer. We still haven’t seen Eric Pardinho, Adam Kloffenstein, Orelvis Martinez, and Miguel Hiraldo yet. These are 4 of our top 15 guys. And the draft is June 3-5, last time I checked we have a pretty high pick his year and next year. And we’re likely getting something good back at the trade deadline. Even post-Vlad, Biggio graduations we should be easily a top 10 system. Jansen has graduated, but Adams and Kirk could break into the t100 rankings. Bo Bichette is literally a hatchling and could be a star. Pearson and Groshans already saw their stock rise dramatically.
  15. For future readers: If you value your health, don’t go back the last 10 pages and read everything like I did. You have been warned. It was a tough weekend and many sacrifices were made.
  16. If we don’t think Rowdy can take 1B full time then extending Smoak can buy you some time. He can be kept on reasonable money and term and atleast provides an OBP and thump guy in your young lineup, also switch-hitter. Having one veteran guy in the club house also doesn’t hurt. The low BA, OBP, SLG, wRC+, RISP concerns are symptoms of a bigger problem. The main issue is there’s too many bench players/quad-A guys playing everyday. This happens when a carousel of guys get an extended look to see if they can “do better” or win a job (Teoscar, McKinney, Drury, Tellez, Davis, Brito, Hanson) while relying heavily on veterans that have clearly outperformed career norms on a hot streak as your main hitters (Galvis, Sogard). Grichuk is also... being Grichuk. A couple of our rookies haven’t come close to their minor league production (Vlad, Jansen), which could take more time. I think having Gurriel in LF and Biggio at 2B injects some life into a very stale lineup. But it would help to get one elite OF bat through trade/FA to complement this young core.
  17. And the apprentice always slays the veteran and takes his place
  18. Some good notes from the MLB draft show before I hit the sack: - Carroll is being listed 5-11 170 which looks a bit better than 5-10 160. Drawing lots of Benintendi comps with less pop and maybe better glove, video footage shows he’s got some serious speed (like out-sprinting other guy by a mile) - Jim Callis really likes Brett Baty and says half the orgs took him off their draft boards just based on age, getting penalized way too much. He sees an elite bat. - Jackson Rutledge touches 99 and already a wipeout slider (ceiling 65 grade offering), potential 3 plus pitches but has command issues. - Keoni Cavaco has some serious helium, potential plus 3B or even a chance to stick at short, plus power. Scouts didn’t see too many games, but draft stock rocketed after workouts. - Brennan Malone has a very impressive delivery, velo, and mound presence. Might have second best stuff in prep class next to Espino - They really like Daniel Espino and thinks there’s ace potential, Harold Reynolds doesn’t buy the arm slot and long arm action issues and think his stuff is the best in the whole class. Triple-digit FB with two lights-out breaking pitches. Will thrive under the right system. - Shea Langeliers is being labelled the best defensive catcher prospect they’ve seen (@last decade) and they love his makeup and has hit well after injury. (Jays also drafted him before) - Kody Hoese has some serious bat speed, home run derby type of swing. - Jack Leiter basically not signing no matter what, loves his opportunity to go Vanderbilt - They’re very high on Hunter Bishop, and all his tools, thinks he is centerfielder, only question is swing & miss - Brooks Lee wants to goto college under his coach dad, would only sign for first round $ - Greg Jones can run, like.. very very fast. - Callis thinks Vaughn is the best hitter in the draft period. Doesn’t care he’s 1B. - They’re giving Bobby Witt jr as high as 60 grade tools across the board. Great bat and very athletic, no doubts about SS position. They compared his swing to Donaldson due to leg kick - CJ Abrams getting Dee Gordon + power comps, good chance to stick af short, CF as fallback. Terror on the basepaths. - Jonathan Mayo doesn’t think this draft is better than last year overall. But there’s some really good bats here. The top end talent position player talent is better. “Hitter’s draft”
  19. Go join em Spanky. I won’t be home and will be very late
  20. https://www.mlb.com/news/watch-the-top-100-draft-prospects-show There’s a draft show tonight on MLB.com and MLB network @10pm if anyone is interested
  21. MLB draft is so wild because of all the shenanigans that happen in the background. Signability issues, college committments, makeup issues, how much money they’re asking for, health, injury history, how comfortable teams are drafting prep, risk vs upside, etc. Making sense of all this is yeoman’s work. Radioscouts pod mentioned about how it would be more simple if its just ranking guys based on talent and taking the best guy available. It would be so much easier if that’s the case, like the NBA draft, where you know what position a guy is playing, what role they’ll fit on your team right away, and the slot money is also hard locked. In MLB we are projecting guys that won’t have any impact on the club until several years down the road, trying to find a good fit is pointless. Guys also have to remember, names listed on those mocks moving up and down have been scouted heavily for 3++ years now. Meaning teams have opinions formed on these kids and created big boards based on 40+ months of scouts and cross-checkers following these kids around. Teams definitely know more than fans do and all this mock stuff is just fun speculation and getting an idea who’s actually out there and what tools they have.
  22. Day 1 is round 1 and 2 Day 2 is round 3 to 10 Day 3 is round 11 to 40 A round 1 mock draft from Radioscouts would be interesting. Bonus points if you guys even explain your picks rather than drawing from a hat. HoF comps would be hilarious. The Radioscouts podcast really differentiate themselves from other BJs media. You’ll often cover topics that are either never talked about or barely covered in other pods. You’ll also be blunt going over various topics, like when a player sucks, their trade values, etc. There’s even a hint of fantasy baseball talk from time to time. There’s also a lot of humour there which is a different style, I don’t see much in other pods other than maybe Birds All Day, which is behind a paywall now with The Athletics. They were very successful and I think had over 1K in monthly patreon support and 300++ patreons before joining the Athletic. I know you guys generously volunteer your time, but would love to see you guys take off and get more support. Usually when there’s no financial drive or support, things don’t last long and it would be a shame, I really like this pod. Kinda like that hidden gem mom and pops restaurant that’s got amazing food but nobody’s heard of them, and they stubbornly never increase their prices to make their business practical, eventually close down the business. I understand most of you guys have real jobs. Overall great episode, I’ll likely listen to it again when I hit the gym.
  23. It would be super easy to incoportate something like “Hi I’m the host John. I’m joined by Alan, Andrew, Mike, and Nick.” It’s a bit redundant every episode, but when I dig back other sports podcasts they actually do that even though 99% of the audience already know who’s talking.
  24. I commented l something similar in the past. John and Alan’s voice stand out to me a bit more than others, sometimes it’s difficult to put a name to the voice talking. I’m starting to get used to it though. They’re getting better at eliminating the dead air and awkward moments. Making a professional podcast recording is actually a lot more difficult than it looks. Edit: Nick is hilarious
