This is how I tend to look at this as well. Shi & co. are decent reads, but they're under an obvious obligation to keep the traffic flowing to the Sportsnet page. Their analyses really aren't that much different than what some of the more baseball-business savvy posters on this board would put together.
And yeah, the payroll maneuvers suggest the attempt to land as many effective pieces as possible. I tend to think he'll need to resort to trades at this point, as guys are flying off the FA shelf now. Who knows what's coming when it comes to AA? Most trades have build up, but AA's seem to just happen. The last one I can recall being in the news before it was actually news was the Dickey move.
