  1. It's not within the confines of the rules, though. He was already even with the base before he laid out for a slide. It was straight up interference. There wasn't even a pretense of getting into the base. That MLB brought the hammer down while the umps did nothing should tell you all you need to know about trusting an ump crew's judgment. Remember when the Royals were head hunting Donaldson, but it was Aaron Sanchez who eventually got the boot? Yeah. Ump behaviour isn't exactly a model for determining what's acceptable.
  2. Does anyone else dislike the Dodgers the way I do? Bunch of under achievers. So many good players, including a 1-2 punch of Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke, and all they can muster is a 90-win campaign in the NL goddamned West. Holy s***, I turn away for 5 minutes and now they are down by seven.
  3. You have a pretty low opinion of the posters here. I'd probably be pretty disappointed if one of my favourite players pulled what Utley did, but I'd still eventually cheer for him afterwards. Doesn't change the fact that dirty is dirty. I call out dumb s*** the Blue Jays do all the time. Everyone here does. It's pretty much the basis on which gameday threads are built.
  4. You know the answer:
  5. It's not quite a Pennington --> Donaldson level of upgrade but it is a significant upgrade. I might push some bunts at him early to see what he's got in the tank.
  6. Stephen who?
  7. But... has he given a rationale for it? I'm well aware of his ********. Who?
  8. I admittedly haven't followed this series at all. Is there a reason Gordon is batting 8th?
  9. To give some lessons on catching fly balls, I think.
  10. A decreased chance of winning is better than no chance of winning due to no game is being played. Come on, dude.
  11. They'd be way higher rated if not for that awful swoon late in the season. Agree that they are pretty scary in a short, tense series (if not just in general).
  12. Not even close. The Jays were favoured going in, but it wasn't an overwhelming chance for victory. I mean, if the Jays lose it'll suck but part of that will be the 22 Years crowd screaming and bitching, as if the length of a drought should in any way change the circumstances for the series. As far as I'm concerned, there are no teams in the playoffs who are clear wannabes. The parity in MLB as a whole is honestly impressive.
  13. Kind of wish Tulo would go back to leading off.
  14. I'm inclined to agree. Price will likely be ready in reserve to relieve Dickey if he looks shaky. Which raises the question of why not just let your superior back-up starter be the... main starter. Also, while I don't think this should factor into the decision at all, I don't want to see R.A. Dickey struggle and take the heat for this game should the team lose. I like Dickey. He's been a scapegoat for a while, but he's also a modestly good reason why the team is where it is right now. I've read lots of Dickey hate over the years (I've even posted some myself), but I really don't want him to be the whipping boy. I think that would be pretty sad. If the Jays lose I want it to be fair and square and with a fight with no one being a goat at the end of it.
  15. Does anybody, sitting in a cramped seat surrounded by thousands of people, have even an average chance of catching a line drive or pop fly coming at them? Like, regardless of where you are from. A foul ball is as likely to fall near some elderly woman in St. Louis as it is Toronto. Someone who really has no chance to catch it anyway, regardless of how big baseball is in her demographic. I mean if we put enough random, in-shape fans into the outfield to catch fly balls we might be able to determine which cities have the most aptitude for actually playing the game. But seriously - judging a demographic by who catches a ball in the middle of thousands of other spectators, dozens of whom are probably reaching for the ball too? How can someone suck at catching a foul ball in a stadium bleacher environment? I can't even believe this is a discussion or point of interest. This is honestly one of the stupidest tangents I've heard this season.
  16. If Rosenthal really wanted his chat with Torre to be meaningful he'd have brought up the Kang-Coghlan collision as a comparison and grilled them about previous negligence in enforcing a rule. "Does being on the national centre stage affect your judgment on the Utley play? If not, why was the rule not enforced in other situations during the regular season?" Torre was aw shucksing because he's just trying to save face because MLB is awful and its on-field arbiters are either incompetent or hold way too much power over them (probably the latter).
  17. Is anyone else a little bit annoyed that a good portion of the broadcasts seem to be talking about the Utley slide? The reporters must have been thrilled when it happened because it meant they'd have a non-baseball baseball story to keep the playoff fans interested. Just talk about the game. Mention the incident once or twice. Don't interview Joe Torre during a Rangers-Jays game and ask him the same question over and over again. Put Harold Reynolds in the drunk tank. tl;dr: I hate human interest stories that invite people to bring their own re-heated opinions to the table. It was an illegal slide and MLB did the correct thing regardless of whether or not they were negligent before that.
  18. Because no one should be giving away any strategy whatsoever. Let the other club stew over the possibility a bit. Not even sure why anyone advertises the starter before mandatory lineup submission, frankly. There might not be much to be gained, but there's zero to lose by trying it.
  19. It's possible tomorrow will be a Dickey-Price daisy chain sort of start too. That wouldn't be something I'd advertise. But to further support your argument, there was also that final start against Tampa (OTOH, Archer got lit up that day too). Interesting developments...
  20. Lol if MLB brings the hammer to Utley but then gets stonewalled by an appeal.
  21. The pitchforks will come out in general if the team loses but I don't think many will argue with the Estrada start. Despite his effective second half, the rust on Dickey's reputation probably still isn't gone for a lot of people (me included, admittedly).
  22. How was the game lost by that? It was tied. The game was unfairly extended because of a BS call that everyone has a clear shot of. Jays played like s*** but so did the Rangers and one of them just got handed the game.
  23. There are a lot of people just breathing the same tired narrative into each other's ears in this thread. Price had an 11-day recovery from his last start, so that must be the problem. What about that his last start vs Tampa was on forced regular rest? That the team shuffled his and Buehrle's start after an off-day to keep Price on 4 days? Price got lit up then by the wet noodle Rays. Price is bad vs the Rangers? Who could forget how those long time Rangers lineups have loomed over Price? Guys like DeShields, Fielder, Choo, Odor, and Chirinos -- you know, the guys who really only have played a complete season for the org... this year. Price kinda stunk at times in game 1. Seemed like he was still actually better than in his last regular start, though. s*** happens. Sometimes the guy who only HBPs three batters all year plunks Rougned Odor twice. 220 innings is a long way to go, and you could just as baselessly argue that the 11-day recovery time was necessary to get even a mediocre Price start considering what he did in his last regular season game against Tampa.
  24. Donaldson, Bautista, and Beltre all suffered injuries in conditions that are pretty much optimal for a world class baseball game. That double-header and follow-up game were injuries waiting to happen. The conditions were awful. Not to mention they affect nothing, there's no way to guarantee a win against any team (especially a team good enough to make the postseason), and the Astros are not a better matchup. The Rangers match up pretty good against the Jays. It's a fact. That's it. It doesn't mean they're going to be lifting their skirts, ffs. Can't believe what I'm reading from some people. It's even more abstract than after any other loss in the middle of the summer.
