    Darn, I thought Petit was a realistic possibility. Oh well. I have a feeling Blanton will get a deal that's too rich for Shapiro's tastes as well given what other relievers have been getting, but then again that might just be Billy Beane trolling everyone, and not a sign of the market.

    The craziness of this off season has kind of made me glad the Jays are taking the boring route, even though I still foolishly refresh Twitter hoping for any Jays news whenever I can.

    There has to be a way to pry a decent arm out of Arizona for very little (Anderson, DLR, Delgado, etc). Do they need a left fielder? Dat batting average and speed on Revere might be useful for them.

    Yeah I wouldn't be upset at all at something like 4/56 for Bautista and Encarnacion. I expect them to want more than that, and probably get it, but if that's the bar for mid-30's players looking for their last big payday, then that's a good thing.

    Man this thread is reminding me how glad I am that AA is gone. Good riddance.

    If Hutch beats him out or they acquire another SP, then sure I can see him as the long man, but I said they didn't acquire him to be the long man. They obviously like him as a SP but can use him in the pen as depth (which they are trying to accumulate) if need be. If they wanted a long man I don't think they move Hendriks for one. They clearly like him as a starter, and he is a good/solid starter.

    I don't think they view Chavez as a 6th man. They might be saying that in case they stumble on to another SP and need to move someone to the pen, but I don't believe that's how they view him if they moved Hendriks for him. They'll probably end up with someone like Petit to fill that role while Chavez is in the rotation.

    Is there any upside in this for the Jays when it comes to Bautista and Encarnacion? If they sign one or both, then they will be paying them free agent money in their mid to late-30's while their defensive value ceases to exist (if it hasn't already). Any time you pay someone big money for what they did in the past, rather than what can be reasonably projected in the future, it becomes a huge risk. If they lose both, then that's about a 9-10 WAR for $24m that they will no longer have. The surplus value is gone and it will surely take way more than $24m to find replacements anywhere near as good as them. Can't trade them due to 10/5 rights and they have no incentive to accept trades elsewhere when they know they play in a park suited for their strengths. So it's either lose both and be stuck having to replace them, or keep one/both and pay two DH's $20m a year during what could be their twilight years. Not an enviable spot to be in.

    The annual "quote a s***** no name Twitter source" rumor. If the Jays are being brought up, it's pure Boras. This would be the least Shapiro thing possible.

    I wouldn't rule out Shapiro signing one of them if the deal makes sense for the team. It's just unlikely. This is a heart vs brain situation. The heart wants to see them retire as Jays and win at least one championship in Toronto, while the brain is pointing out that paying free agent money for a player's twilight is doomed to fail.

    Yep I was on the Kuma bandwagon, but I never expected him to want to come to Toronto.

    Osuna, Sanchez, and Hutchison starting in AAA would be fine with me but that's a lot of bullpen spots to fill without Hendriks.

    That rotation with additional depth can compete in 2016. Next season without Bats and Edwin might be a different story.
