    It would be wise to use both Sanchez and Osuna as SP's but that doesn't appear to be the case with Osuna (at least not in 2016), so Sanchez will have to be the one stretched out. I don't like him as a starter, at least with his current skill set, but the Jays desperately need to develop their own SP's. Work on his repertoire in the spring and see if something can be added/tweaked. We already have an idea that he can be Brad Ziegler part 2, so worst case just flip him back to relief afterwards.

    I'm going to hold out hope that Shapiro can retool on the fly and avoid any down seasons, but yeah, AA detonated 2017-beyond for 2015. Then you factor that, unless some of them are brought back, the Jays are losing Bautista/EE/Cecil/Storen/Dickey/Chavez/Smoak/Saunders after 2016, with not much in the way of prospects to fill those spots (other than Pompey taking over for one of Bautista/Saunders). Not a very ideal situation. I echo the "f*** you Alex" sentiment. Or "thanks for Donaldson, but f*** you Alex" might be better.

    Getting either one to sign before they test the market seems like a pointless endeavor. These guys know they will be the cream of the free agent crop next year along with Cespedes and Gomez. They really have no incentive to stay for anything short of a fair market deal, and the Jays are probably reluctant to do that without seeing how 2016 goes first. Would have been nice if both players were like Halladay and didn't give a s*** about testing free agency, but that doesn't seem like reality.

    He was going to make around $18-19M next season in arbitration most likely, so this move (depending on how the two year deal is structured) might save them a little money, or at least saves them the hassle of going to a hearing next year. The final year of arb in 2018 will be damn expensive, but at least this could plant the seeds for a longer term extension at this time next year.

    That would be my guess as well. I mean, I guess he could take over as manager if they fire Gibbons, but more likely Shapiro probably just likes the guy and wants him in the org in some capacity. With how much this regime has emphasized player development, if they intentionally put someone incompetent in that role, that would be pretty counter productive. Maybe he's better in this role than he was as a manager.

    Wedge did clarify those comments, for what it's worth. I'm not familiar with Wedge as a manager as I never really paid attention to the Indians or Mariners when he was managing them. I'm not sure why they'd stash him in a player development role just so they can wait for a poor start to make a manager change, though. I'm guessing Wedge would have still been available in May or June if they wanted to fire Gibbons, unless he was working for another team before coming to Toronto.

    Bautista is going to decline from age 36-39. It's just a matter of how big of a drop it ends up being. The Jays would be taking a huge risk with that contract. You can find exceptions of players who still have elite seasons in their late-30's, but they are exceptions for a reason. The Jays would be taking a chance that Bautista is an exception and not a norm.

    Floyd on a MLB deal means he's either the long man or the fifth starter. He finished last season as a reliever in the Indians pen, but I don't know whether they'd use him as a middle reliever. I guess we will see.

    Yeah I don't think either player will sign an extension prior to the season. These guys are in their mid-30's or close to it in Edwin's case. This will be their last chance at a monster contract. Unless the Jays give Bautista and/or Edwin a fair market value contract (whatever they interpret that as), I think they'll test the market. Of course, that doesn't mean they won't re-sign, as we saw with Alex Gordon, maybe the grass isn't greener on the other side even after testing the market. I've said before, I don't mind bringing neither of them back, as you'd be paying them for their declining years after five plus years of getting enormous surplus value. However, I'd be fine with bringing Bautista back. It's hard to say, but I think he'll be the one that ages more gracefully than EE, and for sentimental purposes he's far more valuable to the organization than EE is. Bringing both back is a pipe dream, and bringing neither back is my guess as to what actually happens. A lot will depend on how the 2016 season plays out and what the payroll is going forward.

    @GideonTurk Source: Blue Jays sign Gavin Floyd to Major League deal. $1M base salary + $1M in potential bonuses based on active days on roster. I'll wait until a more reliable source reports this, but if it is in fact a MLB deal, then you'd have to think he's being converted into a reliever. Maybe a long man.

    Yep, trading either Tulo or Martin is the only way I can see bringing both (JB/EE) back. You can't fit all five (those four + JD) on a payroll that isn't top 5 in baseball.

    Signing them might be the best value/dollar, but the issue will always be whether Rogers will increase payroll to accommodate two extensions + still provide enough money to improve the team around them. If the payroll remains around $140-150m, then they better be prepared to run out a ton of league minimum talent in other positions, because that's probably all they'd have left to spend if they re-signed both.

    My post was an attempt to appease the Baseball God's by emulating Ned Yost. I don't actually think Tulo should be batting 8th or Pillar should be leading off.

    Maybe Pillar hitting 1st will have the same impact on the Jays as Escobar leading off had for the Royals. Bat Tulo 8th.

    Yeah I think one is the best case scenario. No chance both are back, and I'd guess the chances of losing both are greater than the chances of signing one. It's just too much money for a payroll that won't have enough room to fit them in.

    Navarro's clutch profressional hitting was worth a lot more than a reliever, and was definitely worth beating up the $82m investment all season. Did I mention how glad I am that Shapiro and Atkins are here? If I haven't, I am.
