    I think Jays and Tigers have to be in the same division with realignment. Guardians would make sense as well. The 4th team in that scenario is harder to figure out.

    Wheeler is not only a regular season ace but a playoff ace as well. His post season numbers are excellent. Huge blow for the Phillies.

    Curious to see if the Jays go with Berrios twice through the order and then go with Lauer afterwards. Might not be the worst idea to try to maximize Jose's performance while giving Lauer length appearances out of the pen to keep him somewhat stretched out.

    Yes. At this point I'd just put him on the IL and call up Loperfido to get another bat on the bench. You don't want to mess with the hamstring. Getting him back 100% is more important, even if it means missing some games in late August.

    One of MLB's proposals during the last round of CBA talks was that exact playoff format (14 playoff teams, top seeds get a bye, 12 playoff teams in the WC round), which the players declined. The 8 divisions talk was a few years ago, I recall him bringing up the NFL as the model he wanted. Quick Google search found this quote from last year: "I’d say two things about expansion conceptually. We think we are a growth business, and there are markets around the U.S. that want baseball. That’s our principle motivation. There are also advantages in going from 30 to 32 in terms of schedule and format,” Manfred said on the Questions For Cancer Research podcast. “It would create an opportunity to realign (divisions) – fours work a lot better in schedules than fives.” Of course the players will have to agree with all of this for it to pass, but I think that's the model Manfred is aiming for.

    Manfred's vision is 8 divisions, 4 teams in each division, 14 playoff teams, top seeds in each league get a bye, and everyone else plays in the WC Round. If/when expansion happens, be prepared for that.

    Replacing a 150 wRC+ bat with Ty France is pretty darn huge. No excuse to lose today's game, the Pirates stink but Vlad is irreplaceable when he's an elite offensive player, and looks like he is one this season.

    This feels like the 2-1 loss to the White Sox from whenever the heck that was. Very frustrating.

    Bassitt and Gausman making 5 innings against the Pirates look like one of the most difficult things to get through.

    If France did the splits on that throw then he would have had a chance.

    There's absolutely zero chance the Jays move Berrios or Bassitt to the bullpen. One of them will get a phantom IL stint before they move to the pen, IMO. The Jays have an established vetrin rotation, and all of them have a track record. I don't think they are looking at performance, Stuff+, etc. There are other things to consider here. Every org in the league faced with this exact same scenario would have done the same thing. Lauer is just the easiest guy to move around from an ego standpoint. Doesn't mean it's fair, or the right move to make, but I don't see any other team acting differently. The Jays in particular treat vets like royalty. They're not going to mess with that.

    Feels like this is the first time Ernie has sat against a RHP all season despite not being able to hit them. Maybe DS hitting again will let Schneider feel more comfortable to use him against RHP and less Clement, though I suspect this is probably just a day off to get him off his feet and Ernie will be back on a Ripken streak after this.

    Tigers walk off the Astros. Jays now 4.5 up on the Astros for the "avoid the Wild Card" seed.

    Selfishly I hate that MLB.tv would go to ESPN. I’ve been getting the app for free for years through T-Mobile and I live outside of my team’s area, so I got all the Jays games via the app. Now I have to buy the ESPN DTC service? And also hope that ESPN doesn’t destroy it like they do with everything else they touch? Ugh. Awful. Looking at it for the league itself, this is probably a really good deal for them. I don’t know a single person on earth who has Apple TV. NBC will give them way more reach, and while I’m sure there will be a lot of Peacock included in there, it’s still an app that actually has other sports that people would watch (NFL, NBA, Olympics), unlike Apple. Netflix is the biggest streaming app out there so that’s a good move too. I haven’t had cable in years, and do have Netflix/Peacock, so this deal actually works out great for me if you eliminate the ESPN component. But RIP to MLB.tv. Amazing app that ESPN will crush.

    I don’t know if he finishes with it, but Straw has an outside shot at a 2 fWAR season. If you told me that before the season started I would have fainted.

    If Amir Garrett is still in the Jays org, then it might be time to clear a 40 man roster spot.

    Yeah not only that but Pham is a loose cannon with nothing to lose at this point in his career. The Jays have way more to lose if a fight breaks out (suspensions, injury, etc). I say leave it alone and just get the guy out. Gausman made gutting 5 innings out against that lineup seem like the hardest thing in the world, but hopefully Max has an easier time. Kirk behind the dish will help as well.

    Pham is crazy so if you hit him be prepared for a fight. If it's Max on the mound, then that's crazy vs crazy.

    Vlad did the splits and then ran off the field like normal, so hopefully it’s nothing major. Let him take the rest of the series off and see if he’s good to go Friday.
