  1. I was thinking just do a straight 7 year deal. With no extension he will be a free agent after 2025, but he'll miss the first few weeks of 2019. A 7 year deal means he's still a free agent after 2025, but can start the season in the bigs. Jays get cost certainty instead of year to year arb, and Vlad enters free agency the same year he would have without the extension. I like the team options idea better but not sure he would go for that.
  2. I didn't want to put trade proposals on the Around thread, but I guess there isn't much else to talk about. So....Morales ($12m) for Santana ($35m). Phils save $23m and can dump Morales (or use him off the bench), while the Jays get a 2 win improvement and stop gap at 1b/dh. Santana coming off a down BABIP year (.233) but drew a s*** ton of walks and still displayed his normal power. Seems like a good buy low candidate.
  3. Glad to see some love for Hector Perez. He was 21/22 years old in 2018 and held his own in AA. Disappointed that his GB rate didn't follow him to Toronto but it is small sample size. A Sp who can K that many batters and have a GB rate near 50% is damn good. Just find some control young man.
  4. Or Pillar to Cleveland for Yandy and then have Hudgens work on his swing plane/launch angle to stop hitting so many damn GB's.

  6. A lot of teams need catchers. Martin might be able to fetch a decent prospect (with the jays eating up a ton of his salary).
  7. Much like any trade the Rays make they'll find a way to turn Zunino into Mike Piazza for at least one year while Smith fades into oblivion.
  8. Definitely good news since the Astros org is big on launch angle which Shatkins definitely likes. Although he's bench coach and not hitting coach?
  9. Drury is not good enough to cater to. Defensively he’s been better at 2b and no way he plays 3b over Vlad after a few weeks in April. Put him at 2b after Vlad comes up, whether he likes it or not.
  10. Bryce can get more than 10/300 with no opt outs.
  11. It wouldn't shock me if Shatkins wanted to move Stro. He's a gamer but if he annoys fans with his antics I'm sure the front office is aware of it too. But yeah, seems like a really bad time to move him, unless they get an offer worthy of the 2014-17 version of Stro, not 2018.
  12. McCullers TJS. If you don’t mind seeing Stroman turn into prime Pedro with their cheating ass ways, trading him to the Astros might make sense now.
  13. The NBA has a trade deadline and then right after that a bunch of good players are bought out and sign with contending teams for nothing. How is that any different? That’s actually worse because teams are stacking themselves without having to give up assets, but no one complains about that. No one is suggesting they add a deadline, just that’s there’s no harm in what they have in place.
  14. Sanchez and Smoak for Gray and something. Smoak is instantly an upgrade at 1B for them, while Sanchez either becomes a buy low rotation option or reliever for them. Jays get three years of control on a good starter who might benefit from a change of scenery. Use the money saved to sign Kikuchi.

    NBA Thread

DeRozan was a ISO dominant high usage mid range shooter who couldn't shoot 3's or play defense. He's a dinosaur (no pun intended) in today's game. Replacing him with a 3+D in Green alone was an upgrade. Add Kawhi on top of that, and it's unfair.
  16. What harm does the 2nd deadline have, though? Either a player passes through waivers or he doesn't. Once in a while you will see a big trade (Verlander) but for the most part it's bit pieces changing teams. Not a big deal. I don't mind if they got rid of it, but I don't see why it would be a big deal to begin with.
  17. What's wrong with the waiver deadline? I mean I don't mind extending the main trade deadline, but the waiver deadline is harmless.
  18. The Jays apparently "checked in" on Richards already, but he'll have a ton of options on either better teams or teams with better stadiums/divisions where he can boost his numbers. The Jays are a tough sell for rehabbing Sp's.
  19. Happ makes the most sense if he’s willing to come back. Likes the city/team, history of top performance in the AL East, and won’t require more than 2-3 years due to age. No pick compensation attached either. The Yankees love him though so I’m guessing he ends up back there.
  20. I'm tempering my expectations for Pearson for this reason alone. I'm going to enjoy whenever he is on the mound, but I truly hate pitching prospects so I'm keeping my expectations about as low as possible.
  21. Maile is not the one you'd be opening up a spot for, it's Jansen. Having Martin as a back up catcher is a waste. He can start somewhere else (on a contender) and doesn't have many more years left in him. Do him a favor and let him start somewhere else rather than back up 50 games on a rebuilding team. I think if enough money is eaten up he could bring back something useful. Pillar is diminishing returns. He's not as good defensively as he used to be but is the same s***** hitter. Eventually that's not going to be a 2 war player, and I'd rather just move on now when maybe he has a tiny bit of value while putting Grichuk at CF. Plus, if Shatkins waited two weeks to call Alford up in Sept for super 2 reasons (as Davidi mentioned) then they probably have plans for him at CF reasonably soon as well. Morales can probably be kept as a bench player, especially if they trade Smoak and hand the job to Tellez (having a vet to back up would be useful). Tulo I don't expect to ever play for the Jays again, either due to injury or being let go, so this is a moot point. It depends. Someone better in 2019 or someone better from 2019-2025? That's what we should be determining. If we trade Pillar and put Alford at CF (as an example), yeah, we probably lose a win or two in 2019 depending on how Alford does, but who cares? The objective would be to develop him for future seasons. Anything he gives in 2019 would be gravy. There are many layers to this, not just wins in versus wins out in 2019. I never said pick up 2 Sp's or 2 Of's. Picking up one Sp is what I expect, and maybe one cheap gamble (Garrett Richards?). I only mentioned adding one OF as having Grichuk at CF, a new OF in one of the corners, Billy McUpton in the other, and Teoscar at DH is an option that is worth exploring if they choose to go that route. Trading Martin, Smoak, and Pillar for something of reasonable value shouldn't be too difficult. Morales and Tulo will have to be dumped, which I don't expect to happen with Rogers owning the team, but who knows. Shatkins made 8 trades at this past trade deadline. Moving a few more vets shouldn't be asking too much. It's not like I'm expecting top 10 prospects out of it.
  22. So does Pompey get traded to Atlanta to join AA or Miami to join his brother?
  23. Because the Jays need to spend this year finding out who, if anyone, from the current roster can be counted on to be a keeper during the Vlad years. They can't find that out if 4-5 spots are taken up by marginal value vets. It's not about trade value. Marginal vets have little value in today's market, but that doesn't you hoard them just because you can't trade them for something great. Some times opening up a spot for someone else to play is where the value is, even if he is someone I don't particularly care for as a prospect (Tellez, who Shatkins obviously likes as a prospect for some reason). Trading Pillar could also mean signing an outfielder in a pretty good FA market for outfielders, if they chose to go that route. It doesn't have to be all young guys. Or maybe they identify a potential long term piece in a trade somewhere. Either way, this year should be used to see who can be a long term asset. The place to add vets is the rotation because pitching is so unpredictable that the young pitchers will likely get an opportunity anyway (injuries, performance, etc).
