  1. I'd keep him in, but Buntoyo might have other ideas.
  2. I said at the time, you only sign him to that extension if you feel he has an extra gear in him, not because of status quo. If the Jays are right and he takes a step forward, then that's a good sign for their player development. They did a similar thing with Smoak and it worked out pretty well.
  3. I like this version of Grichuk.
  4. Nice throw by Teoscar there, but no excuse for lazy defence when it is a trend rather than an exception.
  5. Stay hot Espinal. Maybe Panik plays less while Bo is out.
  6. Roark is the pimple in what was otherwise a decent off season for Shatkins.
  7. I think there is a change in Grichuk and it's not just BABIP luck. According to statcast he is in the 75th percentile in whiff% so far this season, and his walk rate is close to 10%, which is a huge improvement over pre-2019/his career. It's practically a different player than what he used to be. In 2018 he was hitting the ball hard and barreling everything with bad plate discipline. They seemed to make some adjustment with him to reduce K's and remove a lot of the swing and miss in his game, but that impacted EV/hard hit/barrel% big time in 2019 which lead to his poor season. If he could combine his 2020 change with his pre-2019 power, you got a damn good offensive player. I'm not believing the hype yet. This is still a small sample size and he's historically better in July-Sept for whatever reason, so let's see him do this from start to finish next season. However, I don't think this is just BABIP related. He's made a real change. Whether it leads to a jump in offensive value moving forward remains to be seen.
  8. After all the games this year the Jays could have won but lost, I'll take this one.
  9. I heard Dan mention Merryweather starting the 10th, put the game on, and it is Bass. I'm telling you, until I actually see Merryweather on the mound, I don't believe he actually exists.
  10. Charlie intentionally walked DSJ? What? Why?
  11. The top 2 teams in each division make the playoffs regardless of record. So let's assume: NYY, TAM MIN, CLE OAK, HOU So that leaves two spots open. BAL, SEA, KCR, DET, and BOS all rebuilding/tanking. Angels suck. That leaves 2 spots for Toronto, White Sox, Rangers. Damn, the Jays actually have a better chance than I thought. Of course Bo being out hurts those chances a lot.
  12. I won't believe Julian Merryweather actually exists until I see him on the mound.
  13. Padres up 4-0 in the 1st. Running up the score this early is embarrassing.
  14. I think that’s the sad part here. MLB is actively trying to promote bat flips and other exciting plays. It’s their own players/management that is stunting their growth in this case. Baseball culture needs to change.
  15. Preller really supported the "unwritten rules" over his star player? What a joke. I guess it's not too surprising since he hired Tingler in the first place, and he wouldn't have hired someone like that without sharing those views. Man, Tatis needs to get the hell out of San Diego. Only four more years, Fernando. And F Hosmer.
  16. MLB players unanimously supporting Tatis. Won't post all the quotes, but list includes Eduardo Rodriguez, Howie Kendrick, Johnny Bench (!), Reggie Jackson, Amir Garrett, Colin McHugh, and probably a ton more that I haven't seen yet. I’m hoping Grichuk weighs in, just for my own amusement. I guess if you want to look on the bright side, the Rangers are the laughing stock on Twitter today, and Tatis is getting a ton of shine. If Padres manager is smart he'll take back what he said last night and support Tatis when he's doing media sessions tonight.
  17. Man, I was going to say that the Twitter reaction might actually be good for baseball since everyone is piling up on Woodward and Tingler and praising Tatis (even older players are sticking up for Tatis), but the apology brings that down. Tatis is one of the most exciting and charismatic players in the league. If Jayce f'n Tingler is going to zap that swag out of him at a young age, then yeah, that's not good for the sport.
  18. Not surprised. Bannister is gone, but Rangers are still unlikable.
  19. Even Jomboy thinks Montoyo is a wimp. I'm glad non Jays fans see what we all see.
  20. The one I've commonly heard is don't steal a base late in the game with a huge lead. I guess I can understand that one, but now you can't swing either? Why not just have a mercy rule and end the game early then? I'm so glad this BS is getting destroyed on Twitter. It's not even a MLB thing, it's two dimwit managers. Just saw that Tingler was part of the Rangers org prior to this season, which explains a lot. Stand up for your old employer rather than your superstar. He's not doing himself any favors there. The Rangers better not plunk Tatis for this.
  21. MLB about to neuter another one of its young stars. Bad enough Woodward complained about it, but Texas only hires 'PLAY DA GAME DA RITE WAY' guys to manage their teams apparently (Bannister was worse), so that's not all that surprising. The Padres manager supporting the unwritten rules instead of sticking up for his player is straight BS, though.
  22. 2018 Grichuk power profile with 2020 Grichuk plate discipline would be a damn good player. Hopefully he has figured something out.
  23. You could have asked this question three years ago and it still would have applied. Angels would rather keep him and lose wins than eat his salary and get an upgrade. I know it’s a s*** ton of money, but still. Gonna have to pay it regardless. Might as well not let it hurt you on the field.
  24. I don’t think anyone is expecting anything crazy, but something like record based off 2019-20 or 2018-20 rather than just 2020 record seems like a plausible scenario that Manfred could implement. In that scenario even if the Jays had the 2nd worst record in 2020, they might end up with a pick between 5-10 (haven’t looked at the records). That would also penalize the Red Sox who are clearly tanking due to injuries and Covid. Or since Manfred loves TV deals, he might implement a lottery based off 2020 record that he could air on TV. Who knows. My point was, no one knows what the draft will be like, so where the Jays finish in 2020 might not matter. Although clearly losing a lot won’t hurt the draft slot. With Bo out and a truncated season, I’m fine with a tank job the rest of the way. It’s only 40 more games.
  25. On one hand, I wouldn't mind if the Jays did this with Kirk who is probably an upgrade at DH today over anyone the Jays currently have, but the thought of Kirk sitting on the bench 5 days a week so Panik and Tellez can play instead is enough to end that idea for me. On that note, I hope more teams, including the Jays, stop gaming service time going forward. We can discuss the merits of doing it for development, but players getting paid earlier in their career is definitely needed in this sport.
