    The Red Sox are down 4-2 heading into the 9th. Jays have to win this game if that score holds up.

    7 inning games and less than 162 regular season games + expanded playoffs. Wouldn't be surprised if that happened at some point. Not any time soon, but someday.

    The pitch clock is the single biggest change they can make that will improve the game. If they changed nothing else besides that, they'd still see a dramatic improvement. Hopefully they implement it next season. It might force the Dolis' of the world into retirement, but I'm sure the game will survive without them. I also like limiting the pick off attempts. That will not go over well with the older crowd, but will definitely cut some of the dead time between pitches, and stolen bases are one of the most exciting plays in the game so adding more of that will help. I think all the rules will help the sport become more visually appealing. Baseball doesn't need a huge change, just minor adjustments. None of these changes hurts the "integrity of the game", so even the ones against it will probably get over it soon enough.

    I'm actually surprised the cheat sheets aren't more hated by fans. I rarely see it brought up as an issue with the game, so maybe most fans don't care, but just looking at players on the field having scouting reports in their pockets is just a bad look, IMO. That's why in a way I was glad Kirk got his notes stolen just to show how stupid it is to bring them on the field to begin with, but I'm probably in the minority here.

    None of what they are doing appeals to a younger demo, so even if the old farts hate their ways, it's not like the young ones are going to gravitate to it, so who benefits from it? Not the sport, and not the fans. The league has to (justifiably) alter rules just to avoid the Rays making the game longer and more boring. Not a single positive comes from anything they do. If the players buy in to their BS, then good for them. I hope they enjoy being underpaid and/or thrown away the moment they make more than six figures.

    I like robo umps (obviously) and a pitch clock. Those two things specifically will help the sport, especially the pitch clock. I've watched baseball with casuals and non-fans, and the biggest issue for them is usually dead time between pitches. I remember seeing an interview with Theo Epstein where he said the things considered most exciting by fans were triples, doubles, and stolen bases. Not sure there is a way to increase 2B/3Bs, but the pick off limit should help SB's. I'm actually fine with all of those rules. Not entirely sure about the shift policy, but if it makes no difference in outcomes on average, then we probably won't even notice it.

    Jays go 5-1 and Yankees go 3-3 to force a tiebreaker. That's really the only way I see the Jays making it. If the Red Sox lose more than 1 game this week, it will be a damn miracle with the pitching they are facing.

    As mentioned though, Semien is on the wrong side of 30 now, while Bichette is still very young. Semien was a better defensive SS previously but will he be over the next 3-5 years? Another factor is that Bichette wants to be a SS, and the Jays, if they want any chance of extending him, have to consider his wants to some degree (unless he becomes 2019-2020 Vlad, then you just make the move and tell him to be quiet). If the Jays re-sign Semien, and Bo agrees to moving off SS, then that's another story, but I don't see that happening, and if Semien would prefer moving back to SS, then coming back to the Jays becomes a little less of a priority especially if the offers are similar elsewhere.

    Agreed. Bichette is still very young and having him at SS hasn't hurt the Jays chances of competing this season. Bringing Semien back as a 2B is fine, but I don't think Bo has Gleyber'd his way out of SS yet, so keep him there and work on his D. I vaguely remember a FG article about how having Matt Chapman at 3B helped Semien's fielding at short. I don't know how true that is, but I guess my point is, buy low on Chapman and keep Bo at short. Problem solved. If only it were that easy.

    Don't forget inexplicably giving Panik 123 plate appearances in 2+ months when Espinal was better in Spring Training and better throughout the season. Having a manager who legit did not know who his best players were and still being on pace to win 90 games is both remarkable and frustrating. Even a competent manager and this team might be comfortably in a WC spot right now.

    The Yankees sweeping was the worst case scenario for the Jays. TOR is 1 game back of Boston, but it's entirely possible that the Red Sox win their next 6 games or at least go 5-1. The road is a lot tougher now, unless the Jays can sweep the Yankees.

    Good. Not sure if going back to Montreal is the solution, but getting the hell out of Tampa is a good start. So many other markets would kill to have a baseball team period right now, much less one of the best teams in the sport. The Rays need to sell $10 tickets just to get 10k into that dump in September. There is no fixing that market. Take the L and move on (Nashville, Charlotte, Montreal, wherever).

    Yeah, the teams offering him long term deals last off season were likely trying to get him at a bargain. Now he gets 1/18 + probably well over $100m this winter. Smart move on his part. Could have easily taken the money but he knew his value and waited. Perfect example of betting on yourself.

    He's also just as hated by Yankees fans as Charlie is by Jays fans. Although no argument on the beta part. If Montoyo even tried to do a "Savages in the box" rant in front of an umpire, it would take him about 10 seconds before he had tears in his eyes and apologized profusely.

    Unfortunately, I don't think that's true. I'd be shocked if Montoyo is gone regardless of the end result of the season. Obviously if they sneak into a WC spot, he's not only staying but probably getting extended, so I guess there's a terrifying option even in a best case scenario.

    The best shot is winning the next two games against the Twins (obviously), and the Yankees either splitting the next two against the Sox or losing both. Basically, the Jays need to go into next week being 1 game back at the absolute worst. That way they don't 'have to' sweep the series against the Yanks, they can take 2/3 and be tied heading into the final weekend of the season. If the Jays are 2 back (or worse) heading into the Yankee series, then they have to sweep, and having to sweep (even though the Jays have done it a few times this month) is just not a good spot to be in. It wouldn't take a miracle, but they can only afford about 2 more losses max the rest of the way, and that might still not get them in depending on what the Yankees/Mariners do. At this point it's not about the other teams, it's about the Jays. If they can't beat the f***in Twins, then it's on them.

    Probably not. If the Indians would be enticed by a package starting with Groshans and Kirk, then maybe there's a chance, but I'd imagine they'd ask for Moreno.

    Nice to have Espinal back. He was having a sneaky good season despite not being better than Joe Panik for the first 3 months of the season.

    Merryweather since coming off the IL: 5.1 IP, 7 H, 3 HR, 3 BB, 1 K, 8.44 ERA, 11.79 FIP, 7.80 xFIP Kinda liked him better when he was great but never saw the field.

    It was to send a message that what he did was wrong. It wasn't meant to injure him. Just to tell him that it was a BS move. Will it prevent other players from doing it again? Probably not, but that's not the reasoning behind it. As far as policing in other sports, it doesn't happen often in basketball because there aren't many unwritten rules, but here is one I remember off the top of my head: You'll notice DeRozan and Tucker in this video, but Cory Joseph also tries to fling the ball at Stephenson right before that.

    Soto is a damn stud. There is so much talk about Ohtani/Vlad/Tatis this season, and it is well deserved, but what Soto is doing is absurd. His next 3 years of arb will be interesting to follow. He made $8.5m this season in arb1. He was super 2 so he has 3 more years left. My guess is arb years 3 and 4 will resemble a FA contract if he's not extended by then. Hopefully the Nats are actually good over the next 3 years and don't 'LA Angels' his remaining years of control.
