  1. Because it's Jose Bautista. There were so many unwashed casuals raging for months that the Jays weren't getting a deal done and it was apparent all along that Bautista was going to hustle till the last dime. Now that the details are out, we can see that he did exactly that. So much of this deal was about the optics and how he'd look that it makes me feel embarrassed as an outsider. I feel like the largest factor in this deal wasn't the Blue Jays or Jose Bautista as a player, but rather "how close can we make this look like Edwin Encarnacion's contract without actually paying him anything?"
  2. I wonder if somebody forgot to tell Bautista's camp that the Rogers Center can't actually sell 4 million tickets in a season anymore.
  3. So he's not playing first base.
  4. 18 in 17, 17 in 18, 20 in 19. Was this deal just meant to trigger people with OCDs?
  5. The option vests with 300 games played between 2017-2018. Assuming "and healthy" means that he also cannot be on the disabled list at the end of 2018. In other words, the option won't vest. Edit: rip
  6. Wait seriously, how the f*** is Larry Walker on his 7th year on the ballot? For some reason I was under the assumption that he was a bat-only guy with bad defense. http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=455&position=OF#fielding 140 wRC+, 230 SB, defensive runs in the positives. 11% BB, 15% K. Batting average above 300. He is the #27 OF of all time. He has better numbers than Tony Gwynn.
  7. Except David Ortiz is going to be a first ballot Hall of Famer. With 15 less career WAR than Edgar. The argument is legit. Martinez is extremely underrated. Thankfully, guys like Jay Jaffe have finally started getting heard and there's been significant progress made throughout baseball on this year's preliminary polling. Then again... Larry Walker is polling at 20% on the progressive ballots despite having a career 140 wRC+ and 69 career fWAR. lol.
  8. I hate this whole "end game" narrative. Yeah, some s***** teams go all-in (see: Phillies, Tigers) and some s***** teams go all-out (see: Royals, Athletics). Some teams find ways to do both at the same time (see: Cardinals, Red Sox, Dodgers). Shapiro and Atkins have managed this team like a top-5 front office since taking over. They've sold exactly 0 players and have still padded the system with Harold Ramirez, Reese McGuire, Lourdes Gurriel and a first round pick without giving up any tangible assets. Even going back to the Vlad Guerrero signing, the Jays have shown that they can acquire legit minor league talent without having to tear the team down. I also don't understand what "semi-competitive" means. Do you gauge how competitive a team is by how many Top-3 free agents they sign? Between Happ, Estrada, Pearce, Morales and Bautista, they've made five major free agent signings in the last two offseasons. Are they "semi-competitive" just because they didn't sign Edwin and Price?
  9. As simple as that. It's really quite creative on the side of the Blue Jays. If Bautista sucks, the rest of the deal is moot anyway. But if he's good, and the vesting requirements are realistic, he might seriously consider triggering his side of the mutual option and look at a 2/37M deal.
  10. Also in the spirit of the Hall of Fame, here is a FanGraphs piece from two weeks ago that looked at the hall of fame cases for active players. Of special note, Josh Donaldson is only one 7-WAR season, two 5-WAR seasons and four 3-WAR seasons away from crossing the 70-WAR threshold and becoming a no-doubt, borderline-first-ballot hall of famer. It's almost ridiculous to consider given how young his career is, but Josh Donaldson has already put up a top-25 peak of all time (would slide in under Utley on that list). Extend him. I want more Jays caps in the hall.
  11. The Twins and the Phillies have opened a joint training academy in the Dominican Republic (an $18M venture). http://ballparkdigest.com/2017/01/17/twins-phillies-open-dominican-republic-acadaemy/
  12. The BBWAA Hall of Fame voting results will be announced today at 6:00 PM ET. Coverage will begin at 3:00 PM and finish at 7:00 PM and will be carried on both MLB Network and MLB.com. Using Ryan Thibodaux's ballot tracker, The Hardball Times have projected five new Hall of Famers in 2017: You can read more about the projections here: http://www.hardballtimes.com/unskewing-the-polls-in-the-hall-of-fame-election/
  13. I'm still triggered that Iannetta signed for 1.5M.
  14. I wonder how much Granderson would cost in a trade. If the idiot Mets are asking for two prospects for Jay Bruce it's probably a ridiculous price, but he'd fit really well here.
  15. If a deal with Bautista falling apart could result in Valbuena + Moss/Pagan as a fallback, I'd take that as a win.
  16. So it's not that different from the universe we're in now.
  17. Hmm... a 37 year old pitcher with a one-trick gimmick versus a top three hitter in baseball from 2009-2015... I can definitely why you'd use one as a precedence for the other.
  18. This is probably the likeliest scenario. I will point out though that you said Upton is slated for a 1M salary in 2017. Is there a source for this? I've been using Spotrac lately, and they've got Upton adjusted for 5M in 2017. Edit: Just checked Cot's, and they've got Upton making $17,050,000 with $16,050,000 paid by the Padres. I think that 16M figure originally included the money Upton was still making in 2016, which is probably why Spotrac has him for 5M in 2017. I don't think the Jays had to pay Upton anything in 2016.
  19. Moniak would have to be intentionally walked at least more times than the number of shitposts on this forum. So it would probably take a few years for your entire scenario to play out.
  20. Shatkins themselves.
  21. I don't understand how an example in which a mutual option is picked up (Aramis Ramirez) would be "exactly the same thing" to a deal that is designed with rejecting the mutual option in mind. Yes, you're putting off salary to the following year in both examples, but the first scenario results in what is essentially a back-loaded 2 year deal, while the second results in a 1 year deal with a deferral. Again, I'm having a hard time seeing how it's "exactly the same thing". It's looking like you might have to go beyond one sentence to explain it to me. Thanks for adding to my credibility by telling me that somebody else did something more efficiently than I did.
