There’s not really much to argue. He’s been pretty bad at stealing bases in his career but has consistently provided solid baserunning value added since he’s aggressive and generally makes good decisions in taking the extra bag.
Varsho is an otherwise excellent baserunner, even with his inefficiency in stealing bags. If anything his lack of speed is probably what causes him to not be as good of a base stealer, that and I feel like he slides weird.
Honestly I'm not even blinking at a sub 27% K rate in his first taste of AAA at 21. Especially when the power has stayed intact (his ISO is actually higher at AAA lol) and the walk rate is good. Would I call him up right now? No, there's no need and there's definitely stuff to work on. But it's not like I would be majorly concerned with contact issues at the MLB level right now aside from any other rookie of ours, moreso making sure that he continues having a good approach so when he's ready sometime next season he can hit the ground running.
A .766 OPS is horrendous for an all bat 1B, like legitimately below replacement level. The power numbers needless to say are vomit inducing not just for the position, but his build and former track record.
Him being a pitcher as well is what's driving all the hype though. Ohtani is hugely marketable and if you stop allowing him to pitch there goes the whole novelty of what he provides. He just becomes another run of the mill HOF hitter instead of a GOAT baseball talent that gives you tons of national and international coverage. No baseball player in a very long time has commanded this kind of mythical allure.
Masataka Yoshida has quietly slipped to a 120 wRC+ with mediocre power, not a lot of walks, and horrendous defense + baserunning. And he's actually outperforming his xWOBA. Not looking like such a hot contract for the Red Sox anymore, the evaluators who clowned on them at the time of signing are starting to be in the right again. 5/90 to a 30 year old slap hitting DH with just above average (for a DH) hitting is pretty bad.
Like "anything ever seen", from the same team who left a historically great season from Zack Britton rotting in the bullpen while mediocre arm Ubaldo Jimenez faces and promptly gives up a walkoff bomb to a great hitter, less than 10 years ago. I for one hope we face the Orioles in the playoffs and those geniuses put Shintaro Fujinami in a tied game in the 10th inning.
Shintaro Fujinami is actively losing games for the Orioles by being put into high leverage while sucking and knowing that he sucks and you have Olerud over here making it seem like this is a 200 IQ genius move by the Orioles.
The Jays have been dicking around Bowden Francis despite a shiny ERA in the MLB and dominating AAA. Optionable mediocre arms exist in every single team across the league. Tyler Wells sucks, lol @ bringing up his W-L record.
There's nothing innovative that they're doing. Sure maybe their process these days is good, but it's not like "anything ever seen". In fact it's seen pretty routinely in their own division alone.
LOL @ anything ever seen. Did the Yankees and Rays of the last 10 years not exist? Those teams have routinely gotten elite relievers for scraps (Clay Holmes, Pete Fairbanks, Nick Anderson, Jason Adam, etc.).
I read somewhere that he’s apparently had a partially torn UCL since like 2009. It could’ve been a ticking time bomb or it’s possible the cancer treatment and time off from strength training/throwing led to it fully giving out on him into a full tear once he got back to pitching.
Their hitters are really bad. It's basically Jose Ramirez and Josh Naylor. Manzardo is a great get by them, unless Tampa has seen some things in AAA to make them reconsider his status as a valuable hitting prospect (he is 1B only with middling power after all). On the other hand, Cleveland shits out an Aaron Civale type out 4 times per year, they can and likely will easily replace him internally.
If you’re gonna troll bait at least do minimal research. The Mets already have an MLB catcher who’s younger than Moreno and better than him at everything.
Berrios is doing well to get out of damage, including timely Ks, but the pitch count is becoming a big problem. Need a couple of quick innings so he can at least give us 6.
