Not sure how hard they tried. I know they thought about it and that some scouts think he's athletic enough to stick there.- 6,727 replies

The bat definitely profiles better at 2B than the OF. I think they'll try that experiment again next Spring and go from there. IMO if he can't play an above average CF he wont have an MLB career in the OF. His bat doesn't profile in either corner at the MLB level.- 6,727 replies

But then you are letting other teams dictate your catching schedule or late game catcher. It's not that Thole can't be an average C against RHP it's that I don't like the idea of a platoon player behind the plate and he doesn't have the ideal skill-set for a backup C. He's an ideal AAA depth guy.

Found this GIF online, thought it would be appreciated here. Your 2013 Blue Jays; http://d3j5vwomefv46c.cloudfront.net/photos/large/796125113.gif

Your argument is his stats look fine. If you adjust his stats to playing everyday, ie) 26% of his AB's to match the 26% of P who are left handed, he has been a terrible player. His defense is fine, he isn't a defensive whiz like Mathis or Molina were, nothing better than your average MLB C. I'd agree that a C that shows decent RHP splits is preferential to the reverse. That being said I think a platoon at C is idiotic. I want a guy I can play everyday consistently without worrying about who the other team is throwing out there. In a backup I want a defensive whiz or a slugger, Thole is neither.
-
Probably 5 win difference right there and that's without the added pitcher's confidence. Can't contend with AAAA filler behind the dish everyday.
-
Even if Thole had a BABIP of .400 he'd be hitting under .250 at this point. He isn't a starting MLB, just watch him at the plate. He has no idea what to do up there and looks like he's in Narnia at times.
-
The guy has been bad his entire career. The stats look alright in 2010 and 2011 and then you realize he shows enormous platoon splits and was used in a sheltered role. I don't want a starting C that can't hit LHP at all and I certainly don't want a back-up that can't. Thole isn't a MLB player, he's a AAAA C. Yes, other players have been worse than Thole, namely JPA. That doesn't mean Thole is any good.
-
Josh Thole has a wRC+ of 18. As bad as JPA is doesn't change the fact that Thole isn't an MLB catcher either, the guy simply can't hit. The Jays should target McCann/Lucroy/Ruiz but at the end of the day if they could just get Mathis back it would be a 2 win improvement on anyone they have on the roster right now.

I was confused as to how AA missed out! haha Rosell is the type of player I;d love AA to add to the system though.
-
I'm fully expecting a terrible overpay to land Garza this off-season.
-
I don't think stockpiling is his issue at this point, he has a really hard time letting go! I think the last few seasons he has really tried to add depth but, has just failed to get enough arms for the rotation.
-
Rogers also looks like a decent backend SP in the AL East. Who would've predicted this when that trade was made?

Sergio Santos to be activated tomorrow
DuckDuckGose replied to Angrioter's topic in Toronto Blue Jays Talk
And if someone claims them they are most likely motivated to get a deal done. Hopefully AA gets something done while McGowan is on the DL. There are too many arms and not enough spots as is, guys coming back from injury will really complicate things. -

DuckDuckGose replied to Angrioter's topic in Toronto Blue Jays Talk
I think it really depends on what AA does with the rotation. If he goes in to next season with Dickey, Buehrle, Morrow, as locks and leave the last two open for competition he might squeak in. IMO it would still take utter dominance (or injuries) for him to nudge his way in but, I think he's pushing himself to the very top of the depth chart at this point. -

DuckDuckGose replied to Angrioter's topic in Toronto Blue Jays Talk
It seems like AA is going to leave at least one spot for Hutch, Drabek, Stroman, Nolin, Redmond, etc to compete over. If he keeps pitching like this he might even be up before then. -
Even as a non-prodigy he's still an intriguing target. Crazy BABIP and I'd want to see that power repeated over multiple levels but, he still looks to have multiple tools. With Tulo still being Tulo they may even be open to moving him.

I wish STL needed a RF'er (maybe they'd go with Beltran in CF?) they're one of the few teams with the elite MLB ready talent to give the Jays a win now package. I'd love to see Bautista for Taveras + Martinez + Rosenthal. AA could then try to flip Taveras+ to TEX for Profar in the off-season. Worst case scenario they keep Taveras...- 6,727 replies
