Scott Rolen blew out his shoulder and back. If Donaldson stays healthy (and Donaldson may get injured but probably not as drastically as Rolen did) he's likely to be top 5 in the MLB in terms of surplus value ie) run differential created per $ paid. If all of the guys pan out for Oakland they probably aren't as valuable as Donaldson over that 5yr period and there is a very small chance they all pan out. It was a great trade by AA.
You might luck in to a playoff spot but you're more likely to be somewhere around .500. Let's also consider playing time; if you have a team of 2-win talent some of them (namely the bench and BP) wont put up 2 wins because there aren't enough innings for them all to have an impact equal to their skill level.
Hard to explain without going in to a really long answer but I'll do my best. Its much easier to acquire 1-to-2-win players than 4-win players and even harder to acquire than 6-win players. So with elite players on the roster it's easier to increase your run differential by adding surplus assets from other teams. A bunch of 2-win common assets won't win you a WS. So you need to add wins somewhere but the scarcity of elite guys makes it harder to increase your run differential as you add wins.
You're completely ignoring the fact that wins at the upper echelon are far more valuable than wins around replacement level. ie) For a 6 WAR player the 6th win a player provides is significantly more valuable than the first win.
What if Colabello or Carrera can't get to an easy ball and extend an inning. What if that taxes the BP enough that you have to bring in Cecil in a save situation. There are so many what ifs; fact of the matter is it probably isn't going to matter.
Got to get them thinking down first though. Then blow it by them! Really though I think the best thing for any lefty is to watch Mark Buehrle every day.
Thank you!
Seems like he has the control to make it work.. If that last start is any indication he'll need to keep it down in the zone to be effective at the MLB level. All 3 of those homers came off meatballs (at least from the pitch F/X data)
No need to stockpile replacement level players, they can add them in the off-season if needed. The Jays need a couple arms to get them over the hump and the opportunity cost of missing the playoffs is greater than the value of the assets (i'm talking real back end guys that you wont miss). If Boyd + Copeland + Labourt gets you Latos they should jump at it and hopefully resign him to a decent deal.
100% command, they need a guy that can come in and consistently throw strikes. For whatever reason Loup and Cecil haven't been able to do it consistently this season.
