I think it often leads to TJS but that isn't a nightmare and sometimes it is just a strain. The Jays really just need someone to get them through this season. If the medicals check out (as in it was a strain that has healed and not a precursor to TJS) then why not?
Ya but he hasn't looked MLB ready to me. I think it's better for his development to stay down until he can really force their hand like he did last season. Very true that it hurts the team. Carrera and Colabello in LF are a nightmare.
No I'm saying AA made some bold moves to try and get the club where it wanted to be (the playoffs). They didn't pan out but the club is in a better position now than when he took over. I'm also very excited for the lineup and young pitchers going forward.
Ownership wanted the flashy moves, they wanted the hype and marketing opportunities associated with the deals. AA made decent deals at the time that didn't pan out do to injuries. Sure he's made some poor trades (RA Dickey) but for the most part the team has improved it's situation every year he's been here and in my opinion he's seemed to learn from his mistakes. That's what you want in a GM.
It's still a terrible contract, the Dodgers don't need the money and they would get far more for Greinke if they were to move him. It would be a brutal move for them, the type of deal that gets a GM fired, just move on.
Trash is a little strong but he's a borderline starter and just isn't very good, there are typically 2 or 3 veteran catchers similar to Dioner available every off-season. No one is going to give up premium assets for a guy like that.
This is Donaldson's third season of being a MVP caliber player. I don't think it was random or a huge improvement in results. He just has a bigger track record now.
Why shouldn't AA stay for 4 more years? He's done exactly what ownership and the executives wanted. He's made huge trades. He's signed some big free agents. He's rebuilt the farm system twice now. He absolutely should be back for 4 more years. They need a new president but AA gets stuff done and that's what you want from a GM.
Because no one wants Reyes and his contract, Navarro is trash and a PTBNL is just a crap shoot. They aren't going to give up one of the best pitchers in the game for that terrible package.
And the expectation for the other 4 guys in the deal is a combined 1-2 WAR. It doesn't matter if they pan out, it's almost preferred so that teams will keep dealing with the Jays. AA brought back an MVP calibre player for 4 spare parts. It was a great trade, quite possibly the greatest in Blue Jays history (if they win a WS it will be regarded in the same light as the Alomar deal).
Updated ZIPS has Donaldson at 7.5 WAR for the season and Lawrie at 2.2 WAR. Steamer has Donaldson at 7.4 WAR and Lawrie at 2.1 WAR. Both have the difference for the rest of the season at 1.5 to ~2 wins. That's a huge gap.
It could still be a plus pitch. In the case of Sanchez he just gets behind in the count way too much and hitters can lay off it knowing that a FB is coming on the very next pitch. For any pitcher to have effective secondaries they need to get ahead in the count and Sanchez can't do that consistently.
