  1. The Rolaids Relief award actually exists although it's not like the official awards because it is formula based not voting based. If they created a voter based one, I could see it being named after Rivera. It would definitely decrease the likelihood of closers winning Cy Young the way the Cy Young decreases pitcher's chances of winning the MVP.
  2. People due this all the time. There are things like Oscar predicting formulas, market analysis and of course there's Nate Silver work on the last U.S. Presidential election. No one can predict the future but a formula makes a better Nostradamus than any Nostradamus.
  3. "We" have some good pieces, we have some cheap pieces. We have few good cheap pieces. It would have to be something crazy like Lawrie in a deal for Longoria and Price. Anyways, it's probably just as well that it isn't a fit because I think someone's going to get burned on Price. At no point in 2012 did he recover his lost fastball velocity. His late-season uptick in performance may not be quite the return to form that it appears to be.
  4. They were probably planning to do that anyways.
  5. A true balanced schedule probably isn't in the cards but I feel like there could certainly be more balance. Eighteen is a pretty ridiculous amount to play against the same team, it gets pretty boring. Teams like the Yankees and Red Sox draw so well anyways that they don't even really benefit from the propping up of their rivalry. Heck, with less games maybe the rivalry would actually generate excitement again because I think most baseball fans feel like it's been run to the ground.
  6. Except that the whole concept of franchise it tied to the concept of a market. You create franchises to exploit a market and you close a franchise when a market rejects it (or is simply not strong enough in the first place). What's the point of a marketless franchise? It would be like a Washington Generals type scenario where you have a team that's just there to act as a generic "opponent". Why would anyone want to share revenue and fund a payroll for a team like that? If the team were successful, it would just mean more losses and possibly less revenure for everyone else. You would want that team to act as a patsy and just be used to padd win totals. You certainly wouldn't want to grant that team any ressources.
  7. We really should clear up what happens. I would really create a mess earlier in the season with standings and what not. I always assumed it was a forfeit but that would be really harsh. I picked up someone who was owned (I forget who) earlier in the season and luckily realized my mistake the same day. It's an easy thing to miss in the Yahoo interface and I don't know if the comish tools are sophisticated enough to make it fixable.
  8. Good value is a nebulous concept. The Jays probably have a bigger need for a dh then any of their potential trade partners so Lind is unlikely to bring back more value than he will provide. Rasmus with his defensive value is more likely to attract suitors but who really knows what's out there. Both he and Lind are worth shopping around but whether either can bring back enough to justify the hit on the lineup depth is kind of doubtful.
  9. Gose is a nice contingency if Melky doesn't work out but best case scenario is still a bounce back from the Melk man.
  10. Better but very similar and with less defensive value not to mention the Jays already hold an option on Derosa. I don't really see it.
  11. I have mixed feelings about Lind. He's worth the money in a vacuum but it would be nice to move Melky to dh instead of him. The Jays should definitely test the waters to see if they can get something decent in return (probably not since Morales is a free agent but it's worth a shot). In all likeliness, the best play will be to keep him and hope Melky is mobile next year. It makes me nervous but there won't be a successful 2014 without a bunch of finger crossing anyways.
  12. Part of the problem with this rotation is that the Jays didn't emphasize overall run prevention. The Jays sunk a lot of money into Buehrle/Johson/Morrow/Dickey/Romero/Happ and not enough into defense. They are not going to open the purse to buy a whole other rotation. At most they will get someone to replace Johnson but it wouldn't surprise me at all if they just went with internal options. In any case, the Jays success will depend on getting the most out the returning starting pitchers not on which starting pitchers they sign (although obviously they could help). I really feel they need to go hard after Ruiz. Signing him is probably the best way to get the most value out of the rotation.
  13. Tough way to go down. If you get a full season of Kemp next year, your team will be killer. Heck, your team was killer this year without much production from him.
  14. Ruiz is a great fit for the Jays. Good catch and throw guy, can actually get on base a little. Huge improvement without a huge cost.
  15. Are those the only 4 guys? If so I don't think the protected pick will make one iota of difference since the Jays won't be in on any of them. The last time the Jays has a protected pick, it didn't matter either.
  16. He has it. As near as I can tell we only faced each other once and I lost 4-9 (back in week 5).
  17. The drop in defense is spectacular. He went from a - 1.3 defender to - 16.6. Part of that is too much playing time over too many positions, part of that is the Rogers turf (presumably) and part of that is just unbelievably bad. Is this normal? I have a hard time believing he got this bad, this fast. Should we consider such a terrible defensive season a bit of a fluke? It was a pretty spectular collapse on both sides of the ball. From useful role player to cesspool of suck in one season.
  18. "Still, about 1,600 men wear a Major League uniform in any one season and over the course of 25 years —with some players leaving the sport after just a few seasons and others sticking around much longer — that adds up to about 5,200. Against that, six players jibes pretty closely with the glioblastoma incidence in the general population." Interesting article. Basically show how tenuous (if not downright non-existent) the connection between tumors and steroids is.
  19. So he made a story about a tumour and the club and the media are just playing along? Give me a break with the idiotic conspiracy theory.
  20. A flat out buyout of Lind seems unlikely but he's worth at least shopping around. A team that's looking at Lind is probably better off just signing Morales but maybe it makes sense in a deal with salaries moving both ways. I for one wouldn't mind taking Melky off the field to help his recovery at least I wouldn't mind if what you get back for Lind plugs an existing hole. Otherwise, you're just adding a hole.
  21. Scutaro is literally the best contact hitter in baseball. No one saw him coming because he's a freak.
  22. Kei Igawa went for 26 million (lol) and Daisuke infamously went for 51 million. Thirty-Five to Fourty for this guy seems about right.
  23. Life is sweet when money is no object.
  24. If you can't stand the WBC than you must really hate Olympic baseball. WBC isn't perfect but it's still by far the best International tournament baseball has ever had.
