  1. Ellsbury was an asset that I was worried would depreciate. I have made no secret that he was available. People are upset because he went to you but it's not like they put in better offers.
  2. That all makes sense but then what are we to make of the Ervin Santana negotiations? Pure smokescreen? In a way, Santana makes AA look worse because it suggest that he did have some money to spend and just decided to go Ervin or bust rather than spread the money around and plug some holes while he still had the opportunity.
  3. I have him as being as valuable as Ellsbury in our league setup even as a reliever so that would be gravy for me. The bigger issue may be that I need to step away from the spreadsheet and better leverage market value.
  4. Boy I guess I'm really on my own island when it comes to player evaluations. The funny thing is that I got racked over the coals when I traded FOR Ellsbury and everybody said he wasn't that good and now I'm getting raked for cashing him in. Clearly, I should have asked for more. Dinger did have some secondary pieces that could have helped me. He didn't sweet talk me by the way. I approached him with a Ellsbury for Chapman swap awhile back and he turned it down saying Chapman wasn't on the table. I approached him again after the injury to see if he would reconsider and he did.
  5. I like how level-headed John Lott is about these things. He reports what people are saying without getting too caught up in the narrative.
  6. Yeah Lofton was pretty dumb not to keep this to himself but he's kind of know as an ass. When I saw that Swisher got made at him, I expected it be over something way more out of line.
  7. Lofton has a reputation for being a jerk but this seems like a really trivial thing to get mad about. Baseball players are weird.
  8. Apparently he's abandoned his plan to become a full time position player and now wants to be a pitcher again. I like him in a bullpen role where he can be your eigth reliever but also help stretch your 3 man bench in a pinch. Of course in the Jays case, the whole reason for the deep bullpen is to protect out of options guys and you'd have to dump one of those to make room for him which kind of defeats the purpose. I bet a manager like Joe Maddon who loves to exploit positional flexibility would enjoy having a guy like Owings on his team.
  9. So you give a fringe MLB asset a job just to not lose him? Maybe that makes sense for a young team with no real chance of competing but not for a team with an ageing core like the Blue Jays. If you're not trading that core than you need to surround it with bonified major league pieces. Let someone else try to find value in the likes of Moises Sierra and Jeremy Jeffres. It's a small cost for putting a better team on the field.
  10. Greg Zaun deserves at least an honourable mention here. Guy has scanned cheques to drug dealer, Kirk Radomski, in the Mitchell Report but he waits months before saying anything and then comes up with the ridiculous excuse that he just gave signed cheques to Jason Grimsley with the recipient field blank. Nowadays he goes on TV and calls out cheaters like a total hypocrite. http://www.citynews.ca/2008/02/15/gregg-zaun-responds-to-steroid-allegations/111
  11. It just goes to show that saves are largely a product of your role not your ability. He wouldn't even get the role in today's baseball.
  12. Yeah I remember now. The assumption JPR made was that by acquiring him he was essentially setting the clock back on Stewart. Didn't work out that way.
  13. Oh man... I really, really forgot who Keilty was.
  14. Wow, I had pretty much forgotten of his existence. Didn't he end up injured for most of the season anyways? A lot of people hated him for hiting a liner that injured Halladay in a previous season (as if that was intentional).
  15. It's very common among Canadians baseball players because of hockey. The way you hold your stick translates naturally to a lefty swing in baseball.
  16. Yeah that's fine but Happ is still 6th on the depth chart right now. Happ will be needed and he will walk guys because he always has. Somedays he will dance around those walks and some days will be uggly.
  17. That kind of contact from Melky is music to the ears.
  18. Ali is problematic because Ali was socially aware whereas Ricky never left planet Rickey. Ali had the arrogance of Rickey but he had the social engagement of Delgado.
  19. The thing with Rickey though it that he wasn't really a bad guy just full of himself and oddly delusional. He was kind of like A-Rod but a lot more good natured. A-Rod is the kind of guy that even Yankees fans hate but Henderson was awesome if he was on your team. Maybe a better comparison would be someone from another sport. Ovechkin?
  20. Oh believe me I remember. I really hated both Rickey and Canseco from those A's teams but I didn't hate Rickey as a Jay. I thought it was weird and stupidly I would have preffered the Jays roll with Willie Canate but having that crazy lineup and being basically the Yankees of that era was pretty awesome.
  21. Holy s***... I had forgotten the details of the trade. That was a disgusting overpay on my part. I really pulled it out of the fire by getting you to draft Betts and not someone else.
  22. I wish I could draw on my childhood memories and make a more origninal pick but I don't think anyone in the history of the team was more loathsome than JPA in 2013. He had the trifecta of mediocrity, arrogance and way too much playing time and all that on the heels of the team's one time catcher of the future and (at the time) top prospect being moved in a gross overpay.
  23. I wish you weren't aware of this. I tried to pry him away before the lists came out but it wasn't to be.
  24. There's a mistake in the list. I drafted Betts. BTS made the pick for me in absentia. Betts went to my team not his. If I had drafted Herrerra with one of my two last picks as I had initially planned I would have killed that draft. My first four picks were good (Moran, Rodriguez, Owings, Betts) but then I really punted the last two picks with Fullmer and Okey.
  25. Aiken over Rodon? That's a huge endorsment.
