  1. I made the Betts pick but BTS got Torrii Hunter for Betts and Roy Oswalt.
  2. If they DFA Thole, I think it won't come until the end of spring training after Martin has worked with Dickey some. The organiztion just seems very preoccupied with who can catch Dickey, more so than the man himself is.
  3. Black is White Up is Down Kingkat is the Dogg
  4. I'm in the minority here but I really won't hate it if the Jays are stuck with him. He's not the best possible DH but the fact that he can fill in at catcher and provide reasonable production if something goes wrong does have value. Martin and Thole with Navarro as a third catcher and spare bat with Jimenez in the minors isn't a bad setup at all if you ask me. It's good to have some contingencies in place.
  5. I'm not saying it's the best play of his career or anything but it came up in the video stream after I watched those other plays and I think it illustrates something important. Seemingly routine looking plays like that are outside of Melky's range and they can really add up over the course of a season. The odd highlight real play weighs much less heavily on defensive value than simply having the range to get to more balls.
  6. That's my understanding as well. IIRC, the Travis to the outfield thing was more of an experiment than anything else. It gives him versatility but it would be the kind of versatility you'd use to provide in game coverage in a pinch not true versatility.
  7. And here's a play Melky doesn't make in his dreams: http://m.mlb.com/video/v36871617/ws2014-gm6-ventura-gets-morse-to-fly-out-to-right/?query=aoki
  8. Wow... he whiffed on a sliding catch deep in foul territory miles beyond Melky's range. What a putz.
  9. I think it's really a toss-up between Izturis and Travis at 2B right now. I think in an ideal scenario, the team would like to season Travis in the minors a little longer. Izturis picking up where he left off would give them that luxury. I'd say it's his job to lose more than it's Travis's job to win.
  10. Aoki ranks negatively as a CF but he ranks positively as a RF. He also, interestingly, ranks negatively as a LF but it's over a minuscule sample size. It's fair to assume he would be a significant defensive upgrade over Melky and he's a solid OBP guy who could fill Cabrera's role as a lineup table setter. He's just an average player really but he's an average player who fits pretty snuggly in an area of need. There should be other similar players (Saunders, Denorfia) available this off season so overpaying for him would be ill-advised unless the market completely dries out in which case overpaying for the marginal wins he represents might still make sense.
  11. 10 seconds to ban...
  12. OF depth is pathetic right now. Another OF, preferrably one who can play CF, would be helpful. Denorfia, Saunders, someone like that.
  13. It wasn't clear to me if he meant ALL home games. If so, yeah that's pretty foolish.
  14. I think it makes sense but it goes against EVERYTHING scouts have ever said about Lawrie.
  15. He's not above average defensively. He's a negative fielder and that's a big source of the frustration for fans. What people don't seem to realize is that his poor fielding doesn't even come close to cancelling out the offensive advantage he has over an average shortstop. There's always going to be a certain mindset that would prefer to see a shortstop with absolutely no bat (say John McDonald) who makes all the plays over a good offensive shorstop who doesn't.
  16. Half his games is way too much. If the trade off for a few DH starts is more healthy shortstop starts, it's a good trade off but it shouldn't be more than a day game after night game kind of thing.
  17. On the surface it seems petty but when you consider that neither player is worth a damn, it's probably best for the Braves to cut ties with a player who might harbour bitterness towards the org.
  18. Reyes provides more value as a mediocre defensive SS than he does anywhere else. He was a bad acquisition but what's done is done. Jays fans just need to deal.
  19. Jokes aside, that should be a pretty productive platoon and always having one or the other available to pinch run will be a nice luxury.
  20. Imagine being a Tigers fan? Your best prospect just netted a 4th OF. (Not that I wouldn't rather have a team that makes the playoffs with a s***** farm then a team with a good farm that never makes the playoffs).
  21. Rumour is there's going to be a no-trade clause too which is really crazy.
  22. Kind of relieved that he's hedging on that.
  23. If AA turns his attention to Martin as a consequence of Martinez signing then GNick is right and V-Mart did us fans a solid by not listening to the Jays.
  24. Wow... coming from Rosenthal too. I mean I like Martinez but he seems like an odd priority for the Jays.
