Markakis is o.k. Despite being a well known player, he doesn't actually do anything particularly well but that's typically what left-fielders are, just guys. It's the last spot to fill on the defensive spectrum. A place to put a guy that's not a great fielder and can maybe hit a little. If Markakis wants to be reasonable and Melky doesn't, there' some appeal to just getting someone signed even someone as thoroughly vanilla as Markakis. Peronally, I would prefer to land someone who can slide into CF though. That would give you more options. It would be nice to have a veteran CF in the mix to go with Pompey and Pillar. If and when Dirks is healthy, you can possilby slide that veteran into center if Pompey isn't working out. You need contingencies.
