Yeah but as we saw with Lind, there's isn't a huge market for defensively limited 1B/DH types.

It's pretty rare for a shortstop. Of course, you don't usually keep a guy who can't field at a premium position like shortstop in the first place. More often it's done for a first baseman. You bring in a Doug Mientkiewicz type for a butcher. That being said, there's no reason it can't be implemented with a little communication. The team talked about Reyes being rested at DH this year but a better plan would have been to tell Reyes that he'd get time off with a lead late. It would have been so much easier to do this before the big errors in key moments. Now it just looks bad. We knew of Reyes's defensive issue beforehand. We knew that this is the kind of thing that Goins could be good for. It didn't have to come to this.

I like the narrative that the guy who can stay cheerful in light of anything, would lose it if he sat for half an inning every now and then.

Toronto broadcasters are so dumb in the way they are circling the wagons around Reyes. Defensive replacements are a thing. It's not a new piece of baseball strategy. It can be implemented. The more they make a mountain out of this molehill, the more it becomes a big deal when it really shouldn't be.

You could always spin it as an injury prevention thing. We're going to take you out after your last PA in most games to give you extra rest and keep you fresh. Don't ask his opinion. Don't criticize his play. Just straight-forwardly tell him what you're doing. Let him speak his piece. Let him be unhappy about it but in the end, just do it regardless of how he feels about it. He deserves to be told how he will be used but that's where the protecting of his ego should end.

The best way to use Reyes is to put in a defensive replacement for him with it's tight and late. The best possible role for Goins is as a defensive replacement. Somehow in spite of having the personnel in place that dictates a very specific strategy, it's not happening. I know that managing egos is a huge part of baseball, a part that's often far too casually dismissed BUT.... at some point, you can't keep giving away games because you don't want to bruise any egos. The important thing is to do in a way that's respectful to the player. Explain the situation to the player beforehand, implement the change and then move on. If you're straight with him, he should get over it. It's a conversation that should have taken place in the off season.
