    I wonder what Saunders and Smoak would want to re-sign? They could also be QO candidates if they keep it up. Signing one or both midseason might not be a bad idea.

    Yeah I mean the Giants take the retooling approach and they are quite good year after year. Jays need to get better at player development more than anything. And I agree, the 2013-2015 approach isn't very sustainable. I'm not suggesting we continue to gut what's left of the farm though like AA did. I am suggesting that we resign those who are willing to do so at costs that benefit the team (perhaps Smoak and Saunders?) and not trade players who are under control (Donaldson) just because we want to acquire as many young players as possible. This team isn't complete s*** moving forward. We can retool it. We don't have to blow it up.

    Very few of their players were acquired in the type of firesale trade that people here are suggesting. Syndergaard and D'Arnaud obviously, but the majority of that team was acquired because they drafted and developed the talent (Harvey, DeGrom, Conforto, Matz) or made the opposite kind of trade where they traded prospects for guys like Cespedes. If anything, they also relied on aging stars longer than they should have in Wright, Colon, etc.

    Agreed. But they did suck forever (5 years of 5th place finishes in a row) and as you've just proven it wasn't necessary for them to labor through all of that. So when I hear the word fire sale and trade Donaldson it's a little alarming.

    This team is getting -1 to 1 extrapolated to full season WAR out of several spots on the diamond. That won't continue nor is it likely occur moving forward. With a decent rotation locked up through next season, the reigning MVP in the fold and a healthy payroll there is not reason to gut the team and labor through 5 miserable seasons. I definitely think we could field a competitive team next season. This isn't basketball where you tank for top picks nor is it football where you do the same to get a top QB. Player development will always be key over having top picks. Now if we are still not looking good for a WC spot come July, then sure let's make some trades - particularly pending FA's who we are unlikely to resign. But I just don't think we need to blow the whole team up and rebuild Cubs style.

    Tulo left with quad tightness. Reevaluated tomorrow. Sounds like he may miss a game or two but should be fine.

    Smoak pinch hit for Barney. Then Tulo got hurt. So Goins had to come in for Tulo to play SS and then Martin came in at 2B for Barney.

    So is it safe to say that you don't think that Jimmy Paredes will extend his debut hit streak to 5 games?

    Yeah if he's getting starts over Goins vs. RHP then the writing may be on the wall for Goins.
