  1. Small win on McGriff. We can partially claim him now and I fully intend to do so. If I were the team I'd have a special day for him and would put him on the Level of Excellence just to stake our claim if nothing else. Glad Rolen chose the Cards over the Phils or no cap. Phils are on my HoF s*** list and we all know why.
  2. I agree with everyone saying the SP depth is a problem, I've said the same thing. But I also agree with Laika and have said that Atkins likely knows it's an issue but it's also an issue for every other team in the league outside of maybe a couple so there isn't a ton that can be done about it now. I think Hurl is the one who said that if one of the big 4 gets hurt we'll just make a trade at that point and I agree. Just going to have to accept it for now. So pucker up and pray Kikuchi is a serviceable #5 this year.
  3. Like Hurl says Europe has money and they like American culture enough that it's a worthwhile endeavor to try and expand there. MLB is never going to be huge there but if MLB can just get 10% of Europe to have an interest in MLB it's worth it. England would be the most natural target but they are a cricket country. They are the most closely linked to American culture though so they are an obvious target. Australia is in a similar boat even though it's not Europe. And like Laika alluded too, their sports suck. No reason baseball can't become more popular than handball. South American countries like Colombia and Brazil make a ton of sense as well.
  4. It oddly never caught on in Europe other than in England.
  5. I'm not going to play but William would definitely jump at the chance if you want me to ask him.
  6. This team has the franchise record for wins with 99 and was one win away from the World Series but they aren't often talked about amongst the current Jays fandom. Do any of you who were around for the ride back then have anything you'd like to share about the team and it's playoff run? I have so many questions. Did the city of Toronto catch baseball fever during this year? What was the team good at? What was their weakness? How was Jimmy Key so effective with a 3.6 K/9?
  7. Maybe we should give Pendleton the honors and he can start a new thread with a player of his own choosing. (This is my way of having someone else do the math for me.)
  8. This was a great thread and I'm sad it's ending. Can we just restart it with a countdown to the regular season?
  9. If anyone outside of Canada and the state of Minnesota actually cared about hockey then Gretzky would be a top contender for greatest athlete of all time. As it stands he's merely the greatest hockey player of all time. But if I'm reading this right I think you're just trying to point out some interesting facts to show that it might be closer than people think rather than actually making the case that Howe is better.
  10. Would be hilarious to do that right after Bo's goodwill extension lol
  11. Stroman should sign the 6'8'' 120 pound McKenzie to an HDMH endorsement deal. He can head the Weight Doesn't Measure Heart branch of the brand.
  12. True. Once China annexes Taiwan they can go all in on America's precious pastime. Just use Taiwan as a factory state which produces nothing but microchips and baseball players. Those worried that Tik Tok is rotting American minds just wait until all the best baseball players are Chinese. Game over.
  13. The way they have it set up now is the most realistic way to do it. Pitcher injury is scary and real and every pitcher has their limits as a result. Since everyone is playing somewhat competitive baseball in the spring anyway it's the perfect time to have a somewhat competitive international tournament. It'll never be anything more than that nor should it. And frankly baseball just isn't a great international sport anyway. It's basically played in North America and Japan. Sprinkle in South Korea and a couple of South American countries who could field subpar teams and that's it. The rest of the world, including parts of North America, plays cricket. I think cricket has 5 times the international following that baseball does. Baseball is just barely an international sport.
  14. Of all the crazy s*** in this post I think the craziest is the idea of having China and Taiwan joining up to make a team lmao
  15. No I think the OF defense would still be much better. IT just wouldn't be the Top OF in baseball like it is now. Varsho >>> Lourdes
  16. I wonder where we rank in terms of team defense? We've got two elite CFers and an average CF starting in the 3 OF spots. 2 excellent defensive Catchers (when factoring in framing). An all-time great 3B and 2B will be manned by good defensive players too. At 1B we have the reigning Gold Glove winner for whatever that is worth. Really the only spot we suck at defensively is SS but he can only go up from where he's been. This has to be a Top 5 defensive team, maybe THE top defensive team.
  17. Danny Jansen is in the best shape of his life. https://torontosun.com/sports/baseball/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-catcher-danny-jansen-fit-to-be-a-force-at-the-plate
  18. Absolutely. Wouldn't be surprised if that's how the D-Backs got them to throw in Gurriel who wasn't someone the Jays needed after acquiring Varsho, but definitely worth something.
  19. Looking back on it though, if we knew we were going to get Varsho I probably would have passed on the Teoscar trade and then not sign KK. That would have been one bonkers lineup.
  20. I'm sure the Jays tried to keep Moreno and exhausted every avenue they could but Jansen is a tricky asset to trade with him never putting a full season together due to injury and then his offense taking a while to catch up to his elite defense. If everything clicks, and there's plenty of reason to think it could, you are talking a Top 5 Catcher. But it's hard to get Top 5 Catcher value from him when he doesn't done it yet. Kirk was probably also very hard to trade. With what he's done so far at his young age he's in the company of Hall of Famers. But he doesn't look anything like an elite player so it's also hard to get full value for him. That left them to trade Moreno. We've dove so far into it that I think we all agree that we got close to full value for him but a national writer might look at it and think we got 80-90 cents on the dollar for him thus it was a bad move.
  21. Lol yeah he's being paid to be a middle of the rotation pitcher, not to have a 2.75 ERA at home.
  22. I get the reasoning but it's definitely a glass half empty take.
  23. https://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/story/_/id/35630053/2022-2023-mlb-offseason-grades-all-30-teams Can someone post the Jays blurb please.
  24. Montas, Story, etc. Hopefully this is a lesson for the Jays to stay on top of their injury situations. It could be the difference between getting a half season out of a good player vs. nothing at all.
  25. Nestor has a hamstring issue but shouldn't miss too much time. What's their upper minors depth like? I'm just looking at their roster resource page and their lineup leaves a lot to be desired. That rotation 1-5 is nasty, even after the Montas injury. But another injury or two and they could be feeling it.
