Yeah exactly. Brandon Belt (138 wRC+ this year, wRC+ 125 in his career and a 2x WS champ) isn't a high end bat that leads to success in the playoffs. Neither is Bo (125wRC+ this year, 127 career). And definitely not Vlad (118 this year, 130 career). But the Diamondbacks on the other hand, DEFINITELY have the big bats needed. Corbin Carroll (133 wRC+, 131 career) is that guy. So is Ketel Marte (127 wRC+ this year, 113 career). Christian Walker is that guy as well (120 wRC+ this year, 111 career). Those are the star bats necessary for playoff success.

No Hanton said that we have a long way to go because almost no one in our starting lineup could start for any of the 4 remaining teams. I replied that I thought we were better across the board over one of those four remaining teams and then it was back to beating the dead horse!

Connor cracked the code you guys. Christian Walker and Ketel Marte (both with career a OPS under .800) are the true "star bats" necessary for playoff baseball success. Someone get Andrew Friedman on the phone because Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman ain't it. You need real stars like Christian Walker and Ketel Marte.

Lol whatever team ended up doing well you'd have some sort of post hoc explanation on why they are actually a great team. And yeah Marte is crushing it. Caroll is doing well but nothing amazing (.800 OPS) and Walker is doing ok (.726 OPS). But really it's their .750 OPS "depth" hitters that you claim can't hit in the playoffs that are getting them through. Moreno, Perdomo, Alek Thomas, etc. Even the supposed "ace pitcher" that you guys kept pointing to as some sort of proof of why they are a dangerous playoff team has an ERA well over 5.

The Phillies definitely have a good roster. They won 90 games and had a +81 RD. And that's with Schwarber having to play the field a bunch (that alone cost them about 2 wins) and Trea Turner playing like complete ass for half the year. Both of those are fixed now so they are more like a 95 win team based on that alone. But they also have great pitching as they lead the league in pitching WAR this season and a lot of power. The only knock is defense but that's been fixed to a large degree with Schwarber DHing. So they definitely brought one of the best 26 man rosters to the playoffs. But of course, they are also one game away from getting bounced by the Diamondbacks who most definitely did not bring one of the best 26 man rosters to October. -
It's really hard to make these kind of arguments when the Diamondbacks (-15 run differential) are 1 win away from the World Series. We beat them across the board...lineup, rotation, bullpen, etc. Nearly everything.

I don't remember this all 100% clearly but it seemed to me that ownership was clearly involved in the Betts trade as they attempted to tightly control the PR of it. They made the trade but got a ton of backlash on it so they waffled on Brusdar Graterol's medical records. They got a slightly better version of the deal but everyone on all sides were pretty pissed about. Then a bunch of crap happened with Verdugo (he was hurt and had some off field stuff). If ownership isn't involved in baseball decisions then why are they making public comments on everything all the time? Henry has also consistently bundled the PR around payroll. Saying it's going down then claiming her never said that and then claiming it was going up again and it didn't really. There is no real reason for that team to have to yo-yo payroll like this (they were 13th last year) unless ownership is directing it. I guess that's what ownership does but that team should have consistently strong payrolls. 13th highest is embarrassing for them. It all just reeks of ownership meddling.

Yeah and it seems like a lot of the bad contracts came at the directive of ownership though I don't know that with 100% certainty. There doesn't seem to be a long term plan where they are building for something. It's an aimless organization with a good but not great payroll and the expectations of winning. Bloom seemed to be doing ok, even with one hand tied behind his back. But he was shown the door.

Owner interference seems to be a factor and is often cited as the main reason GMs don't want to go somewhere. I remember when Keith Law turned down the Astros back when they were the Lastros and he cited owner interference. They are perennial contenders now but it seems like the owners do in fact interfere there as evident by the Click situation. I thought he was crazy but in hindsight it is best for all parties involved because it would have been hilarious to think of Keith Law and his brand of outspoken far-left SJW politics (reported myself already don't worry) running a team based in Houston, Texas. lmao With the Red Sox it seems like the team was forced to trade Mookie Betts and then just a couple of years later it seems like they were forced to spend money. That kind of yo-yo'ing has to be extremely frustrating for a GM.

There are 30 GM jobs in all of baseball. Getting turned down multiple times is ROUGH. I mean Ng took the Marlins job for crying out loud and that's got to be one of the bottom 10 of the 30. But she's too good for the Red Sox? The Red Sox are either a dumpster fire or there is industry chatter that they already have their man and people like Click and Ng don't want to waste their time. Or perhaps it really is just unique personal decisions from Click and Ng. But I prefer to ignore that and dunk on the Red Sox instead it's more fun.

Yeah I agree. He does seem risky but the upside is there. If we truly want to add more power he's a good fit. Horwitz/Canha is probably just as good offensively and also provides some defensive value (Canha in particular) but it's more AVG/OBP. Soler could hit double the amount of homers as those two. If we did sign him we might as well trade Horwitz. I think a cheap team might be interested in 3 pre-arb years of a guy like him.
