  1. Fun fact: They already considered that before naming the team but nixed it because it would be too close in likeness to Minnesota's loser team.
  2. Addition by subtraction? Trade DeRozan for a star player who only plays in half of the games.
  3. I'm in favour of adding additional waivers so this development is disappointing to me.
  4. It'll be fun watching him in a footrace against Teoscar then know that he'll 100% put up a better BSR than him.
  5. Maile is not a prospect. Tulo and Pillar are not supplanting anyone. So basically your argument is for Tellez. And I think the board has already established that Morales would be someone to trade away if possible. It's not like I'm against trading Pillar, but then you have to find someone better and/or cheaper on the FA market which I don't think is really that easy of a task like you make it out to be. I agree, but this is the whole thing. The team's TOP priority should be securing starting pitching. I don't know how many miracles you expect from this team, but in your universe it sounds like they need to: 1. Dump 5 guys. 2. Pick up 2 SP. 3. Pick up an OF, maybe even a second one now because you created a hole dumping Pillar. So that's 8/9 moves made, before addressing the bullpen, and all done on a budget (maybe down to 6/7 moves if Smoak/Pillar bring in players addressing the other issues). That's a very, very high expectation of the FO for this offseason.
  6. Nothing to disagree with here, everyone should be on the same page as this. My only disagreement is with rank. Assuming the Jays fail to acquire Jon Gray or have to give up an SP going the other way, signing two SP has to be the top priority. If there is no room in the budget for that and McCutchen, then you miss out on McCutchen. I'm not a huge fan of what the Jays have going on in the OF, but they have enough offense elsewhere to at least be able to afford Pillar and another defense-first black hole at the plate if that's what it comes down to. If the Jays do sign two SP, they might be able to dump Sanchez to the pen and hopefully he has a Wade Davis-like resurgence there. That might solve some of the BP issues.
  7. I really don't get this attitude. So you wish the team to spend its time to try and dump five vets when the league's valuation on these type of players is lower than ever. The end result being Tellez, a marginal prospect, replacing Smoak/Morales. Tulo supplanting no one, because it's unlikely he will play. Maile replacing Martin and mystery new guy replacing Pillar, when Pillar is a perfectly adequate OF in the first place. This seems like A LOT of effort to pay other teams to play/not play players just so the Jays can get marginally younger by giving time to unimportant prospects. Instead of focusing its time on shoring up the pitching staff.
  8. Look at what I quoted. Tremendous insights!
  9. See this is why I keep coming back to this place, for top notch analysis like this. Without you guys setting me straight I'd be hoping for the team to sign some old vets to shore up 3B and the OF and give the young guys a shot at SP.
  10. That deal makes perfect sense to me. The Cubs have a lot better use for $7M than a pitcher coming off TJS who would slot #6 in their rotation.
  11. May the city of racist, ignorant louts with no self-awareness forever be cursed with a President they don't like.
  12. Such a weird contract for an older player still in his arb years. I guess San Diego was banking on him being a 5 WAR super-utility superstar by age 30 and bank the profits on his club options.
  13. s***. This guy tried. Ok boys, time to give up your broadcasting dreams except BigCecil and Terminator because they are clearly not hiring anyone under the age of 50. It has nothing to do with a personality disorder or anything, like digging up an eight year old email to copy and paste to...I dunno...prove a point? Also the good old days about baseball are awesome. I totally want to hear all about Buck's perception of how Sandy Koufax pitched based on watching him a few times on a grainy black and white TV as a 12 year old 50+ years ago. That sounds like a very reliable anecdote. In this day and age players are force feeding us their personality on Twitter, like Stroman. Yuck!
  14. Yeah. I know you're supposed to pick up WAR wherever you can, but this is really a team that should focus any FA dollars on pitching if there is any hope at all of competing next year. If the team has a choice between paying Brantley and paying Keuchel, I choose Keuchel.
  15. As opposed to your lover, a picture of your hand or the girl you'll be running over with a rental van on the sidewalk.
  16. Yup. And it's not so much about him, but what his wife looks like: Reasonable looking woman for her age, probably hotter when he first met her. Let's see the internet warriors do better! EDIT: love the story of him being a total creeper before they met. Creepy Charlie made sure he got what he wanted.
  17. I suppose the term "younger" is up for debate when discussing managers. He is younger than Gibbons so by that measure it remains true.
  18. Meh. 53 is not 70. A 53 year old with extensive experience in an organization that embraces analytics is better than a 40 year old that is not. Also Gibbons is older by three years.
  19. Sounds like a reasonable hire, given the two minutes of research I have done on him - reading that article Spanky posted.
  20. I'm in the camp where DeRozan's contract is a negative asset, or at best neutral. So the Raps get one year with the best shot in franchise history of making the finals, plus Ujuri gets a do-over on how he wants to spend that cap space. There is absolutely no downside here. Even if DeRozan becomes a complete player mid-way through his career, good on the Spurs for coaching that out of him. It was clear that he and the team had a ceiling while he was here. How many times could I count people asking for a rebuild in this thread after the Raps chumped out of the playoffs early? Well, this is the best f***ing way to do a rebuild I've ever seen.
  21. You also have to see it from the perspective of Rockies fans. They'll probably view it the same way we view the Vernon Wells trade and think their FO is brilliant. Except the Napoli player in the deal is going the opposite way.
  22. That they have outstanding lack of depth at the position despite being a playoff team? Morales could probably rake there. Morales for Desmond and Gray. Jays get him for basically a salary dump. Actually looking at Desmond's contract that is still a little too cringy. Give them back Tulo as well and we have a deal.
  23. I really hope the Jays do get Jon Gray. With the amount of armchair QB we have on this board who think they are smarter and have more information than the Rockies' FO pushing for him, I want to see if they are actually right.
  24. If Gray is good then he increases the chances that this team competes for a playoff spot, with a lot of other things going right. If he sucks then you dump him to the pen, trade him for PTBNL or DFA him if he is *really* blocking a guy in AAA for a starter role audition. But Gray for Diaz, I don't know about that.
  25. Cleveland is a 4th place team in the A.L. East. The biggest contributor to the Indians being a sustained winner and the Jays being considered also-rans is Cleveland being located two degrees in longitude west of Toronto. That being said, Shapiro did a fine job in turning that s***** organization into something reasonable while he was there. I'm optimistic that he can do a lot more now that he is not working in America's garbage dump.
