  1. Hey, YOU are the one who wrote a post in which Jim "100% agreed" with. Take your lumps, they are well deserved.
  2. Ugh. NOW is the time to strike when it comes to acquiring a top end pitcher. First, this is a good year for supply on the FA market. Second, the team has payroll flexibility now so that a contract can be front loaded. Not so much when arbitration for the young guys is around the corner. Third, even assuming the best case scenario for Pearson, this team still needs at least one top end pitcher. We don't need to wait a year to figure out that hole. This team has a 0% chance of building a playoff caliber and playoff-winning pitching staff with internal options within the window period for the young position players. If Atkins can't see this and act accordingly, then he is incompetent, not risk averse.
  3. I am choosing the Houston Astros as my October 4th BJMB Post Season Survivor $$ sponsored by Tercet/Admin pick, please.
  4. There is absolutely zero chance that the Red Sox send away anyone of value just for the privilege of getting rid of Price's contract, least of all to a division rival. I think you guys have the right idea, but the wrong team. You need to find a useful but expensive pitcher on a team where the front office and ownership already have no credibility with the casual fan base. Think Pirates with Liriano.

It's like the NHL is intentionally trying to put all of its eggs in its playoff basket. Once the over-officiating and the participation point disappears in the playoffs, the quality of the game substantially rises.

"The NHL is not s*****" - says the guy who doesn't watch a full game until April. Even when betting on the sport.
  7. I remember the board had a big meltdown that one year where the Jays had protected pick status for a QO FA signing and AA didn't take advantage of it. Then he signed Martin the next year. If there was outrage back then there should be outrage now. The Jays have an advantage in that they can give up a lesser comp for qualified free agents than other teams that will be vying for mid-to-top tier FA. People are always talking about the Jays having to overpay to attract free agents to this demonic third world country. Well this is one mechanism where an overpay isn't really an overpay when considering the value of the pick along with the contract signed.
  8. ??? If your target is Odorizzi then you want the QO because the Jays with protected pick status are at an advantage of giving up a lesser pick than most other teams. Let's face it, he isn't signing with the Orioles or KC. Toronto has one of the best shots of the bottom 10 in the standings this year of turning it around and being good next year.
  9. Yeah I'm not as worried about the OF as a lot of others seems to be on here. Gurriel was injured so he was out of the picture for a while so recency bias. But if you put him back in the picture the entire OF landscape changes. I expect Grishuk to be better next year. One decent signing and the Jays are set with some nice depth at the position too. It's the easiest spot to fill with a 30's vet willing to sign cheap for 1-2 years. Would rather focus on pitching.
  10. Washington Nationals Oakland Athletics I understand the theory behind picking the Brewers, but there will be other chances to thin the herd that will have better odds than this. Especially if jays4life continues to kindly summarize the board's picks in his posts. Like, for instance, picking the Oakland Athletics who are home favorites. It will be funny if Grant ends up winning this after two games.
  11. I look forward to him providing details for his thesis as he said he would.
  12. Based on run differential Jays win 71 games this year. Add 10 WAR for the three newcomers replacing three replacement level shitbags. A full season of the young guys adds 5 WAR. You're up to 86 wins right there which in a normal year is in the thick of contention.
  13. Guys the Jays have literally a 0.00000% chance of signing Cole or anyone else of note instead of the 3.3333% chance any team has signing of any player because a bad contract was signed 15 years ago under Godfrey and which AA got out of so the team actually got a pretty good deal on the player and Rogers is firing s***** celebrities from their TV programming.
  14. If the Jays are not signing two starting pitchers that are a significant upgrade over what they currently have on the roster this off-season then there is no reason to not give Alford another life next year, good player or not. I obviously hope the alternative takes place and that this team does not boot another year of cheap control of its core and actually does something to compete. Unlike the pessimists who seems to get off being pessimists. Especially the "players don't sign in Toronto" crowd.
  15. It would be funny watching him struggle to curl 20 pounds on a barbell for the first few weeks until his muscles acclimate to this new found "exercise" thing.
  16. NL has been the better division this year. The AL's playoff race is so strong because there are so many bad teams to run up a good record against.
  17. The only thing I want to know is if any of them dressed in blackface.
  18. Wife or gf yes you want to eliminate that. Hitting a random SJW tard, this should still be okay. They probably identify as gender neutral anyways.
  19. Dude do you know how many people would be in prison if every fistfight was illegal? For a fist fight to be a chargeable criminal offense the victim actually has to file a report (I thought this is pretty common knowledge?). Now in domestic violence cases it's pretty much an auto-file because of the history of underreporting these incidents. If a baseball player wanted to charge another one with assault for an incident on the field I'm sure they are legally able to do so. Whether they get coerced by the union to keep it in house is another issue.
  20. Oh that's without question, if the deal is right. Just that...Bautista, Donaldson, Stroman, DeRozan on the NBA side. Any hint of a player saying he wants to stay in Toronto and the rabid fan base is ready to make the guy the next Ryan Howard. "Aww that guy said something nice about my city and country I WUV HIM!!!". Players aren't stupid and even if they are, their agents aren't.
  21. Also I think players have learned how to play the fan base to try to get some leverage against an FO. Of course the guy who spent like a month here and was released beforehand wants to spend the rest of his career in Toronto! And so many of us self-conscious Canadians fall for that s***.
  22. I get the feeling that a lot of people are still wrapping their heads the changing market dynamics of free agency. Good players with little to no perceived risk will get paid (Cole). Mediocre players or players with potential but with risks or not a long track record do not (Shoemaker). How some people were floating around Sanchez at 5/80 even before this shitshow of a season baffles me. Even Smoak's contract which seemed like an absolute bargain basement steal at the time ends up looking like an overpay just with how the market for those types of players has turned since then.
  23. I know the whole argument is you get WAR where you can, but the team really needs to focus its cash on pitching. A #2 starter for Donaldson dollars has a much greater incremental impact for this team.
  24. Being a good negotiator and good talent evaluator are two different things. Atkins might have the second trait which helps to offset the lack of the first but that still doesn't excuse him not having it. At that point in time, the consensus was that he overpaid. If he was dancing like some dude standing outside a public stall waiting to take a major leak at the chance to get those two guys, it's not a good thing. Instead of being happy with Atkins, the team should be aiming for Cashman-level of outcomes.
