  1. If we want to talk about luck, the team had the best pitcher willing to be very patient and stay here below market value throughout the 2000's. We could also say that had Bautista learned how to hit a month earlier in 2009, that may have been enough to keep Halladay for the 2010 season and compete. Then the team would have had that ace going into 2013 and feel less compelled to make the Marlins or Mets trades. Different forms of luck.
  2. Well, in 1992 and 1993 the Jays both outperformed their run differential by a few games. Not the team's fault that you guys were born too late to witness those great years. Check the all-time franchise stats the Jays' W-L record is 3,383-3,458 despite scoring 31,599 runs and giving up 31,485 so it has been a problem throughout the team's existence. Must be the weather.
  3. I recall the Jays were briefly Vegas favourites to win the World Series after the trade was made, so it apparently wasn't a horrendous trade from day one to very many people. The trade is vilified in hindsight. I never really liked the trade, but I liked what it represented. The Jays FO and ownership were finally willing to go all out to build a winner. It didn't work in 2013 but it did work reasonably well in 2015 and 2016. Even if not sustained. Yeah I know, it's always better to build a sustained winner through a young core, but with Ricciardi's s***** drafting that was never, ever going to happen. It was about time to end the 20 year playoff drought.
  4. Puig is like a tall Stroman so without the little man syndrome I would expect his antics to be tolerable.
  5. I'm going to go to every one of his games until I get a hand on his wife's used coffee cup or something and clone a few of those for myself.
  6. This is a very bad take. Given the extreme lack of salary constraints for the next two years, the risk is effectively zero (if we assumed the Jays weren't successful in deploying these funds elsewhere). Even 2022 and 2023 aren't looking that onerous. Oh no! Rogers stock price might tank 3 pennies if this guy rips open his arm on opening day. I don't own Rogers stock so this is a risk I am willing to take. Even just the soft benefits mentioned ITT like the Korea influence, FO trying to compete in the eyes of the fans etc, might make this deal worth it.
  7. Cool! Looking at that thanks list is like looking into this board's old age home. The 20-somethings are just jealous they missed out on the glory days.
  8. I'm willing to give Fisher three more nosebreakers before coming to the conclusion that he can't catch the ball.
  9. Not sure about this statement, especially if the Jays do add Price (or another SP) and Pearson is in the rotation some time in 2020. All that excess SP depth will migrate to the pen. Meanwhile the OF is kinda okay offensively and ranging from below average to brutal defensively.
  10. Close the books on AA.
  11. Raptors are a team in a league built for individual players. Great for regular season, not so much for the playoffs. Nurse is COTY. Let's see if this team can make it to Giannis and the EC finals this year. I'll cut Dallas some slack given that their best player on the court yesterday grew up in the Knicks organization.
  12. As far as shoring up the BP. I'm in favour of getting another SP (like Price) and using the mediocre but very deep "starting" staff as fodder for the bullpen and hope there is some Britton or Wade Davis magic somewhere in there. Rather than spending good money to sign BP targets. Focus on the OF next. Pearson and Kay are the only two pitchers with a chance of being on the roster some time in 2020 who should be groomed purely as starters. Roark and Anderson are probably locks for the rotation as well. That would make everyone from Thornton and Shoemaker down BP candidates. I don't see a scenario where Borucki isn't a BP arm now in April, given how the current roster is constructed.
  13. So wait...a four year deal with a full no trade clause. So the guy actually WANTS to be here for the full term of the contract and didn't just sign for the heck of it because the Jays offered the 4th year. I wonder how Team Krylian and the rest of the self-hating Canadians explain this one. Oh yeah, non-American. Well last I checked the percentage of players comprising the redneck MAGA demographic who put Canada on the same terms as Burkina Faso in the "foreign" department is in decline. So the Jays will be alright.
  14. Reseeding the final four is an exercise in futility if the better teams in the east are going to run up their regular season records against the Knicks, Bulls, Cavs etc. The NBA should just go to one conference where the top 16 teams make it and everyone plays each other 2-3 times if they want the best teams in the final four. Also LOL at the idea that a mid-season tournament would ever be taken seriously by contenders.
  15. Yeah f*** those conservative redneck farmers. Canadians can survive just fine eating Twitter outrage campaigns and gender pronouns.
  16. Isn't your home also the crackhead capital of Canada now?
  17. 1. Cucked by Cito 2. Cucked by Cito/Carter 3. Cucked by Beeston's "off the record" promise to Clemens 4. Cucked by Green after Green got cucked by Cito 5. Every one of these lists conveniently leave out the Cruz Jr. trade, which if the Donaldson trade makes up for about five of AA's mistakes, I figure this one has to make up for three of Ash's. I can't believe that I am defending Ash, because he did do legitimately moronic things like the Sirotka and Loaiza deals. But he came in as a rookie GM surrounded by strong personalities coming off the World Series high. How good of a job would you do if you had Cito Gaston, Joe Carter and Paul Beeston yapping in your ear and you actually had to listen to them?
  18. Everything from you is more tolerable when I read it in Haiku form. I suggest everyone try it.
  19. LOL @ Manitoba's highest tax bracket being $70K.
  20. I have nothing against Saskatchewan but they need a decent CFL team (because they care about such things) or an NHL team out there or something to talk about. Being insufferable about Toronto's MLB team is a little much. As far as Roark is concerned, I'll be happy with looking at 150 IP of 4.50 ERA on a stat line at the end of the year, but I am not watching THAT pitch. This will be as painful to watch as Dickey. No thanks.
  21. Even though they are division rivals, the Jays and Yankees do make a good match. The Jays need pitching and can add payroll. The Yankees have excess pitching and need to shed payroll. But f*** Happ. I'll take Happ if the Yankees package Tanaka along with him. Neither are all that good anymore but still a step up from what the Jays have. Plus if they manage to sign one more decent SP the rotation doesn't look too bad. Jettison all the young "depth" pitchers to the pen. It makes sense for the Yankees since Happ + Tanaka = Cole's salary. Tanaka is on an expiring contract so it's not like they are giving away a long term piece to a division rival. And with those two, the Jays might be able to compete in 2020, but are still outclassed by the Yankees.
  22. I meant more from a psychological, veteran presence point of view. Plus we shall see in a year from now how well my comment ages. DeRozan is more like the Raptors Vernon Wells. I cannot believe you did not see that parallel first. The Bautista comparison to Lowry is pretty apt.
  23. First off, it's Lowry's first game back after a thumb injury. Let's give the guy a longer leash than one game. Second, like it or not, Lowry is the Raptors' Joe Carter. He's going to get that longer leash even if Nurse knows he shouldn't. It's NBA culture too. How many years were the Lakers set back playing a past-prime Bryant? This is not Nurse being stupid. It will be a challenge for him to balance what he knows he should do based on the stats he sees and the egos of fragile millionaire human beings and team chemistry. Amazing it only takes one loss to bring back the whiners. 15-5. Raptors could go exactly .500 the rest of the way and fall in line with pre-season expectations.
  24. Enough with the loser narrative "no player wants to come to a bad team". Do you think the FO is just sitting on their hands with all this? Yeah the Jays had a bad record last year. They also have a reasonable expectation to significantly improve this year and in the following years. As a destination, the Jays have 2015 and 2016 to build off of. They have an owner willing to spend. They even have the Raptors this year if you want to use the "Toronto is a world class sports city" spiel. They have Shapiro's record in Cleveland. Any presentation from the FO to a free agent will show: a. We have a solid core of young players and strong farm to build a contender. b. We have the ability to pay you AND others to come in to accelerate and lengthen the contention window. c. We have a decent track record in Cleveland. d. Toronto is a world class city for reasons A, B, C etc... Don't tell me for a second that the Blue Jays are not a top ten destination in the MLB. It's all on Atkins to communicate that point.
  25. Baseball might be due for an expansion team or two. As well as stop rewarding teams so much for sucking (draft lottery).
