At the time of the trade I hated it for the reasons you already mentioned but looking back I've changed my mind. At the time we were trotting out trash like Scott Copeland and god knows what else every 5th day. As soon as we made the trade the rotation stabilized and we went on that ridiculous run. It's a difficult task to determine what exactly the financial benefit of the Price trade was in the long-run but I definitely feel like it boosted the team's morale and made it an easy decision for guys like Estrada to want to resign. I know a lot of people will say we won because our team was just good but I truly believe that the momentum started by the Price trade fostered a winning environment for that season and the following one. Now do I think that AA's methods are sustainable? Hell f***ing no, but the Price trade is not one you'll ever hear me complain about.
