    I don't think anyone was. Maybe Trevor Hoffman and Billy Wagner came close. Jansen in his glory days with the Dodgers put together a stretch of really solid years. Kimbrel when he was with Atlanta. Can't think of anyone else really over the last 2-3 decades. Guys like Eric Gagne and Brad Lidge had amazing standout seasons where they were just spectacular, but they weren't consistent over a long period.

    Yeah he's not a top 3 or 5 closer in baseball. Only those guys would be considered elite really and there aren't many. There are some elite relievers as well who aren't closers since they haven't been given the opportunity yet as well. Romano has shown he's capable of handling the closers role over the last 3 seasons, so he's definitely better than Swanson and Mayza when it comes to that regard. Some pitchers can't handle the ninth inning, no matter how good their stuff is. Did the Astros have an elite closer last season when they won the World Series? Romano had a higher WAR and more saves than Ryan Pressly did last season. Romano isn't an issue at all and isn't going to hold the Jays back from winning a World Series.

    Sure, some other closers I would rank ahead of Romano: Bautista Williams Clase Hader Bednar Munoz Alexis Diaz Edwin Diaz (when healthy) Liam Hendriks (when healthy) Would still consider Romano a Top 10 closer in the game. Even with that list, couldn't list 10 closers I would prefer ahead of him. Romano has been very good and consistent as a closer. He's perfectly fine!

    Lol you just said he's a 3-3.5 ERA caliber pitcher. His ERA hasn't even been close to that the past three seasons. I agree he's not one of the top elite closers in the game, but he's still very good and consistent. He gets the job done majority of the time. He's going to blow the odd save here or there, but I have no problem with him as the Jays closer.

    Romano's ERA is 2.68 this season.

    The right move was probably to bring in Mayza to face Lowe or walk Lowe to have Romano face Margot. Regardless if Schneider brought in Mayza and he blew it, I bet some of the trolls would be complaining "why didn't Schneider leave Romano in!" haha.

    I think he's become one of my new favourite pitchers in baseball from a likability perspective. Such a character!

    Some FAs who likely will sign a 1 year deal are Donaldson, Longoria, Urshela, and Brian Anderson. Actually like the idea of bringing in Donaldson as a guy who plays some 3B and DHs. Same with Longo. Urshela wouldn't be bad at all if he could stay healthy. If he could come on a 1-year deal, would definitely welcome that. Has shown he's capable of putting up a 2-3 WAR season. Not sure he can return to his 2019/2020 offensive form.

    Yeah JD Davis wouldn't be a bad option as well. Should be good for 2-3 WAR. Who do you think the Jays would have to trade? Moncada comes with some huge risk. Wouldn't give up anything of significance for him and would probably want to bring in another vet 3B like Donaldson or Longoria just in case. Not sure if he'll ever put together another 4-5 WAR season. Still only 28 and if the Jays can't bring in anyone better, would take a flier on him though.

    Ah flying out of YTZ. At least you didn't have to travel across the 401 to YYZ. Yeah flight crew shortages have been an issue with a lot of Canadian airlines. Porter especially since they've been expanding at a really fast pace.

    Gotta love Romano and the guy has been rock solid as a closer! If I had to buy a new Jays jersey, it would be with his name on the back of it.

    49ers are my pick to win the Super Bowl. Love that defense. Still questionable about how good Purdy can be as a QB but definitely rooting for him. San Fran's issue every season is that they haven't had an elite QB. Imagine Brady or Rodgers on their team. Cowboys have looked really good as well and will be tough.

    Some possible 3B trade candidates this offseason: - Manny Machado - Nolan Arenado - Jake Burger - Ryan McMahon - J.D. Davis - Yoán Moncada Jays would have to take on significant payroll for Machado or Arenado, along with trading prospect capital (more for Machado). Very unlikely to happen. Burger is a 30HR + bat but defensively isn't that great and doesn't have a great BB rate. Probably going to finish with a 2.5 WAR this season and doesn't become a FA until 2029. Marlins are always unpredictable though. McMahon could be interesting given his control and contract, but hasn't been anything special with the bat even at Coors Field. Posted a 3 WAR season in 2022 and is sound defensively. J.D. Davis has one more year of control so likely is expendable and since the Giants have Wilmer Flores. Moncada has one more year of control + a 2025 club option. Last two seasons he's been awful but had a 5.5 WAR in 2019 and 4 WAR in 2021. Some more risk but high reward if he returns close to his 2019/2021 seasons and he's still only 28. Out of that group, I think McMahon or Moncada could be great fits here.

    These are the types of discussions I like seeing in September on this board before the Postseason. Kikuchi has definitely earned starts in the Postseason if the Jays make it on to the DS and CS. Possibly the WC round as well. Gausman hasn't been as sharp as late but thew two really great games in his last three on 9/9 against the Royals and 9/20 against the Yankees. Hope he finishes strong and you have to hand him the ball for Game 1. Berrios should be ahead of Bassitt and Kikuchi still IMO. Ryu likely is left off the WC and DS/CS rosters unless the Jays want someone to eat innings in a blowout. If the WC goes to Game 3, who would you go with - Bassitt or Kikuchi? I don't really have an answer. Likely will be determined based on the opponent and which arm has faired better against that opposing lineup and has had success in that park.

    You were having a complete breakdown after the Rangers series lol. Jays are in a good position to make one of the WCs, but if they miss out by a game or so, you can point to some of those poorly played games against Baltimore and Boston earlier on and other winnable games they failed to capitalize on. Let's hope that isn't the case though!

    Yeah I'm most worried about the Yankees this offseason. No way they just stand pat after their disappointing season. They make a big splash or two this offseason, and I still think they land Ohtani.
