  1. Easy to pick on Eric Gregg. The guy whipped through the minors built like a linebacker and was an outstanding umpire. He developed an eating disorder, gained over 100 pounds and couldn't run, get in position to make calls or even crouch properly behind the plate. It was more sad than anything. You want old school incompetence? I present you with Greg Kosc.
  2. They could do that. Sure, it's an option. A 40-man roster spot would need to be created. Clint Robinson's swing is as long a Summer's day. No loss. He won't stick when McGowan comes off the 60-day DL anyway.
  3. Gibbons and Pete Walker had lots of good things to say about Wagner in March. A few media members, Bob Elliot being one, also reported that Wagner was really impressing during Spring Training. He's not hurting his chances of coming up the way he's mowing 'em down for Buffalo. If Rogers had options I'd have to believe that Wagner would be up by now.
  4. Wagner also came in with the bases loaded and 1 out and shut it down. Nice 2.2 inning save with 6 Ks.
  5. Maybe he needs to hit for the cycle AGAIN.
  6. Cubby is a respected ball/ strikes, out/safe umpire and is well liked. Can't explain the total brain cramp or why other members of his crew didn't have a talk in order to get the rule right. It just doesn't make sense. He is a former umpire school instructor btw.
  7. Neil Wagner came in for Buffalo with 1 out in the 7th and bases loaded last night. Not only did no runs score, he struck out 6 in his 2.2 innings for the save. He's been dynamite of late!
  8. 2 for 4 with a walk last night. Now hitting .430
  9. Surprising but numbers don't lie. I guess they are just better line drives this year-- so far. I get that he's on a silly run that goes back all through Spring Training and runs slow. There does come a point though when results matter. I'm not the most results oriented guy generally but I do like smart hit skill players.
  10. I meant to say monster year he finished off in Altoona. 2008. Anyway I get where you and others are coming from. That said, players who are actually good at baseball are more valuable than pure athletes who are bad at the game. Bonifacio is bad at baseball. He's physically gifted but is horrible in the infield, takes bad routes in the outfield and isn't a smart hitter. He stands out this year because he's been overmatched at the plate but end of the day, he's a project who's had flashes of success in the past all on his athleticism. I think that it's more likely that he regresses. The pitchers are simply smarter than him. He's a less skilled Cory Patterson, with less power.
  11. Well I think that I'm more saying that he's always hit. He's a hit skill player. He has always hit line drives but since his monster year in Altoona, he's hit them with more authority. IMO this is a good at baseball type player who just doesn't have the physical skills that blow scouts away. He hits well and gets on base and does everything else just ok. Sounds like Craig Counsell to me, just shorter and without the range to ever play any shortstop. Lets be honest, if he could play short we wouldn't even have him. He'd of been held onto.
  12. .450 is unsustainable. I'm very sure that I said so. It's not clueless to say that line drives over ground balls and fly balls result in more hits. Lately he's hitting line drives and that would explain the inflated numbers. How does that not make sense?
  13. You're being silly. I gave the only reason a pitcher could not face 1 hitter. Excuse me if I didn't for a second think a MLB umpire crew could blow such a simple rule. I posted further down in the thread as a follow up. And btw, I never said Rudy Gay tried to change his name and you know that. I referenced an ill advised publicity stunt fundraiser he did with his favorite strip club. Quit beating a dead horse.
  14. Bonifacio would have to come off the 25-man roster and he has no options so it would be Boni. Where does he fit on this club anyway? DFA him and then trade him for a AAA depth type starter that won't be missed by the trading team but might be useful in Toronto with the depth concerns.
  15. Exactly what was said again and again about Craig Counsell, David Eckstein, Junior Spivey and others time and again. Counsell and Negrych share similar paths actually. The left handed hitting infielder Counsell didn't really get much of a glance until he was about the same age as Negrych.
  16. I actually mentioned him when he was acquired and a few times in March. I remember him from when he was with Altoona. He's just a guy with a good hit skill that seems to get better. He was a Pirates organizational player of the year and is a multi time all-star in the minors. He's just never been viewed as a great athlete and he can't play shortstop so he's never been up. I'm not reacting just to what he's doing this year, it's the body of work, the marked improvement and the being silly hot enough to earn a shot. His being a hit skill first guy, something the Jays have few of, doesn't hurt either.
  17. There's a difference. Luis is a classic fastball mistake pitch hitter. He also has a long swing and has failed at the MLB level. Is the definition of a 4-A player. He's in his 30s and is too good for AAA and can't hit or lay off MLB breaking stuff.
  18. Have you seen any Bisons hilights? There's a reason for the BABIP. Almost everything he hits is a line drive. It's hard to fly out or ground out that way. And yes I get that the numbers are unsustainable but line drive hitters with a good eye get on base. Negrych has done exactly that at every level.
  19. Izturis at short, Negrych at 2b, Kawasaki off the bench and Bonifacio to wherever-- who cares! I know the numbers are AAA stats and sure, he's not a .427 hitter but the team has no leadoff hitter without Reyes and Jim fits the mold of a 2-hitter and that's close enough for now.
  20. http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?pos=&sid=t422&t=p_pbp&pid=502145
  21. Jim Negrych (2B)- also plays 3B & LF .427/.477/.677 (OPS 1.154) -108 plate appearances -41 hits -10 BB -11 K -3 HR -1 triple -13 doubles -1 SAC fly -1 SAC bunt -8 for 22 (.364) RISP His OPS is actually higher v LHP and he bats left.
  22. He's not scum. He's just no longer good at his job. Go back a decade and Davidson was good. He has held on far too long. One more point on Joe West, prior to the 2011 playoffs, he had Angel Hernandez on his crew for several years. Last year and in 2013 he has Andy Fletcher, who is quite good and in his mid 40s, along with Rob Drake and Sam Holbrook, who are both darn good as well. It's amazing what happens when your crew mates are good!
  23. I don't recall. Just want to say that I just read the updated story on the Angels game. No mention of an injury. And the Astros manager's understanding of the rules is hilarious. I just find it hard to believe that he talked Cubby into that with his bizarro logic. It all makes no sense. Too easy of a rule to get wrong.
  24. In pro baseball? Maybe once every 5 years. In the Majors, every decade and a half or so. It's really rare. No reason to blow a ruling. 1986 last protest upheld in MLB
  25. Joe West is only in Toronto once this season. It's the Astros series near the end of July. Bet you notice an improvement from what you remember.
