    You pigeonholed the #2 hitter on the team. He must be X. He cannot be anything else. He must be X. So therefore, if you aren't X, you can't hit in the # 2 spot. There is no room for any other way of thinking. Yep, I'm the one dismissing other ideas and progressive thinking and logic.

    Oh I know, I'm really just arguing against the "it's been that way since 1900 so it must be right" point that metallijay is trying to throw out there. Heck, we used to build things from asbestos since the early 1900's too, sure glad we learned how stupid that was. I wonder how the NFL would look right now without the forward pass.... or basketball without dunking? Sure glad those other sports were able to get past the "it's been this way since X date" garbage line of thinking.

    And your #3 hitter comes up the most times with nobody on base and 2 outs. In reality, lineup construction really matters very little. And making the argument that " it's been that way since the beginning of the 1900's" doesn't mean it's right.

    Well in the absence of a real leadoff hitter, I have no issues with Melky hitting leadoff with Jose and Edwin right behind him. what I would love even more is Lind to keep up his hitting so he could hit third between Jose and Edwin against RHP until Reyes comes back. Against LHP, I would probably move him lower to 5th or 6th.

    85 wins would probably be a bad scenario. you'd then have AA selling more of the farm to get even older players who will then go on to underperform.

    I think the goal has to be far simpler. For the hitters, have good plate appearances. Make the opposing pitchers work to get you out. You do that and they will start throwing you hittable pitches. For the pitchers, trust your stuff and make them hit their way on instead of issuing free passes. That's where I would start the speech. After that, just talk about winning the game and series you are playing. If you win series' you start to avoid those 3+ game losing streaks that just cannot happen if you want to contend

    Scutaro probably has one of the best contact swings in the game. He very rarely swings through a pitch without getting wood on it.

    Hey, as long as he doesn't strike out a ton and maintains his line drive stroke, a 5-8% walk rate will do just fine.

    AS soon as he can throw his fastball for strikes consistently, I would agree. He has a very good slider but it doesn't play if he can't locate his fastball at all. That was his big problem when he was up with the Jays last year.

    Despite the ugliness of his overall slash line, Gose has shown some pretty nice progress this year. His K rate is down 10% from previous and his walk rate is up over 5%. BABIP is a bit low as well so while he's not exactly setting the world on fire, He is showing signs that he might not be a complete liability with the bat.. eventually.

    Donahue is not a prospect at all. Pompey and Lopes are doing okay, though Pompey is the same as any other of AA's "athletes." He strikes out too much, doesn't have power and doesn't have a good hit tool. Lopes has a good hit tool and doesn't strike out a lot, but his 2.2% walk rate needs to come up. At 6'0, 185 he might fill out a bit more and maybe get to average power when he fully develops so that wouldn't be bad for a 2b.

    I really wish people who don't quite know how to apply the term "regression" in baseball vernacular would stop using it. It doesn't mean what you think it means in the context you just used it. The word you are looking for is "retrogress."
