Boyd and Pompey swept the Florida State League for Players of the week last week.
Florida State League
Dalton Pompey, Dunedin
(.452/.514/.645, 7 G, 14-for-31, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 9 R, 4 BB, 5 K, 4 SB)
A fourth-round pick out of suburban Toronto in 2010, Pompey spent most of three seasons in short-season ball before joining full-season Lansing in 2013. If he was solid for the Lugnuts -- .261/.358/.394 in 115 games -- he's looking like an MVP candidate thus far in Florida. Dunedin is off to an 18-5 start and Pompey is leading the way with a .371 average (third-best on the circuit) and a league-leading 12 stolen bases in 12 attempts. He still strikes out a lot for a guy with one homer, but he's getting on base and making things happen.
Florida State League
Matt Boyd, Dunedin
(1-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 G, 1 GS, 8 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 0 HBP, 0 BB, 12 K)
Say what you will about the win stat for pitchers, but it's no mistake that Boyd is 4-0 through his first five starts this season, as he showed last Friday in a victory over Clearwater (stats above). His 0.29 ERA on the season actually tops Lively for the best among Minor League hurlers with at least four starts under his belt. It coincides with a 0.74 WHIP and 37 strikeouts -- both good enough for second in the Florida State League. He's fanned at least seven batters in each of his last three starts, culminating in the 12-strikeout performance Friday.
