    I mean, it's too bad Casey is punting the game, but JV has come to play for sure I get resting your big guys before the playoffs, but you already have 2 days off until your next game and have games against the knicks, sixers and nets to close the season where you could easily rest them without a big deal. But when you're letting Thompson, Wright, JV, Patterson and Ross go head to head with Parker, Aldridge, Leonard, Duncan and ginobli, youre in for pain.

    His main issue is that his amazing changeup is rendered useless because he can't command his fastball, which let's opposing hitters just sit on the change.

    It's a fairly irrefutable fact that the vast majority of professional athletes in any of the major sports are in clear decline by the time they are in their early 30s, let alone their mid to late 30s. Betting on aging ballplayers remaining valuable while paying them market value is a recipe for disaster. Sure you can have a couple, but after this year, that couple will be Tulo and Martin, with a side of Donaldson in the next year. I don't want the Jays to be out of anything by the deadline, but that doesn't mean I can't see what's best for the ball club's future IF that's the case.

    People equate "big arm" with velocity. As for why his fastball isn't elite, yeah...poor command is pretty much it plus the fact that he has nothing hard that breaks to his glove side (apparantly he's working on a cutter which could partially help to solve that) Basically, batters know if it's hard, it's moving arm side and they can lay off quite easily on pitches that he might get swings on if it wasn't so predictable.

    It could be, but he did throw 35 innings in the minors over 9 starts, so it would have been longer than your typical rehab time. If they did get an extra option though that's the most likely reason.

    Yeah. He didn't debut until 2014 in July and wasn't on the 40 man roster in 2013 so 2016 should be his last option year. Hutch should be out of options he debuted in 2012, spent all of 2013 in the minors ... all of 2014 in the majors....and part of 2015 in the minors.

    There's any number of reasons, but marketing is a huge part of it. Part of it is also the nature of the game and the lack of emotion and action in it, and the continued efforts of morons like Gossage that would rather watch 9 gentlemen congratulate each other with handshakes and hugs than flip a bat and create some intensity.

    That's just it though, small samples in spring training are essential meaningless especially this early when half the hitters he faces are A ball guys. I see his putting on weight and working on a cutter as evidence that he realizes what he needs to do to improve, not that improvement is imminent. It's step 1 of like ... 20

    This is actually one of MLB's biggest problems. I bet you could walk down the street of any major city in the US and show pictures of LeBron James, Tom Brady and Mike Trout....and Trout would be in the far minority of being recognized. Baseball doesn't market it's stars nationally with any effectiveness at all.

    Then point to anything in Sanchez's minor or major league track record that actually suggests he is capable of taking the next step. Analytics or not, Sanchez has yet to harness his tools. Expecting a sudden leap based on nothing but a narrative of "well he's young so he should improve, right?" that another poster suggested doesnt make any sense. That's not analytics or even traditional thinking, it's just blind hope. He still has the same running fastball he can't really command, a curve that isn't effective enough and a changeup that's basically useless because of his poor fastball command. That lack of effectiveness from his secondary pitches is a large reason why he doesnt miss bats. He's working on a cutter, which would help him alot if it's becomes reliable to actually have a pitch that moves to his glove side and that he can keep inside to lefties, but fastball command is still the big problem.

    Nobody uses them as absolutes except when obviosly trolling the entrenched anti-analytics dinosaur crowd. That happens all the time because it's easy and fun. The problem is with individual people who see anything presented relating to analytics as being presented as an absolute, when that's not the case, but that individuals perception is flawed.

    They arent. But traditionalists tend to interpret things differently that rational people.

    People who bash analytics really need to understand what they are, not what they think them to be. They aren't meant to be absolute predictors. Anyone who feels thye are being presented as such is basically choosing not to understand. BEsides, quoting a 100 PA sample size from 2013 as proof of anything is pretty foolhardy.

    1st quarter wasn't bad. 2nd quarter was probably the single worst quarter I've seen the Raps play this year

    There's no such thing as a bad 1 year deal. I'd offer him one if he put up 4 WAR without even thinkng twice.
