  1. Seems like hitting a grand slam every inning is a good way to win ball games. What do you guys think?
  2. Yeah his velo was fine in the first inning, but 2nd inning was noticably down. 90-91 vs 94-95.
  3. Yeah, like I said, I hate their fans so much it bleeds over into hating the franchise, but I've got no issues with the players for the most part. I think Molina is on the same level as Derek Jeter in the "overrated" department, but those 3 years in his late 20s were pretty cool.
  4. I also really hate that I love the Rays and how they turn piles of s*** into gold every f***ing year.
  5. Luis Garcia imploding before our very eyes. He's got nothing today.
  6. The Cardinals would be up high on that list also because of their obnoxious fans and the whole "true Cardinal" ********.
  7. This is getting out of hand early. Garcia can't hit the strike zone unless it's right in the grand slam happy place.
  8. It's hard to imagine Marquez is even on the market. And if he was - i doubt the return would look like Grichuk, Kirk and Pearson. It's probably not a massive underpay but they'd be looking for guys with more certainty IMO. Grichuk is a certainty, but not in a good way. Kirk would be very intriguing, but Pearson is the furthest thing from a certainty there is.
  9. yeah okay. That's where my tier 2 list falls, so we're on the same page then.
  10. Well, ... yeah, good pitcher, good contract but premium starting pitcher? What's your definition of premium? I'd have him in a list of Tier 2 guys, but not what I consider premium.
  11. Poorly worded on my part with regards to Matz vs Marquez. Their talent levels are much closer than you make it seem, but their current values are drastically different due to age, contracts statuses etc. And yeah, usually it is an either/or scenario when talking trades like that for the Jays, unless they've recently decided to break through the payroll luxury tax. There's never been any trades like the one being proposed, along with a large splash FA signing that follows that puts them at or above the luxury tax in recent memory. The biggest FA signings in the last 5 years and Ryu and Springer, but there was no trades that preceded them bringing in legit talents like a Marquez. The trade with Oakland for Donaldson is probably the best recent example of that type of trade in the 2014 offseason, but there were 0 free agent signings of anyone noteworthy after the trade in that offseason. Even the following offseason the only notable signing was JA Happ.
  12. I fully know Marquez's value. The point I'm making still stands. Is it better to trade for him specifically which costs assets + cash, or sign someone like him for cash only which would cost more in actual dollars but allow the team to retain the assets whose production/value would also need to be considered. So, based on your mention of Stroman... would you rather just sign Stroman for cash, or trade the assets + pay cash for Marquez?
  13. I know, I'm just making conversation. Sometimes I find people throwing out trade scenarios without really thinking through what they are proposing. And the comparison of Matz and Marquez wasn't so much about career WAR by X age, just that their current #'s, from a FIP, k rate, walk rate etc... are about identical. Matz age 27 season was virtually identical to Marquez age 26 season this year. In any case, it's clear you've done your homework. Original point of mine was...Marquez would earn 11m in 2022, 15M in 2023 and 16M in 2024 (or 2.4m buyout). So ... there's really 3 scenarios the Jays would be mulling over. Trading assets for 2 years of Marquez plus the buyout totaling 28.4m Trading assets for 3 years of Marquez totaling 42 million Signing someone relatively similar to Marquez via free agency for whatever that might cost, which is probably more in dollars, but retaining the 3 assets.
  14. German Marqez is a right handed Steven Matz, just a few years younger. Would you give up those players for Matz if he was 3 years younger? Or would you just try to find a similar pitcher via free agency and just pay money and keep your assets?
  15. Yeah in 2019: "Appeals on a half swing may be made only on the call of ball and when asked to appeal, the home plate umpire must refer to a base umpire for his judgment on the half swing. In making his ruling, the base umpire should determine whether the batter’s wrists “rolled over” during an attempt to strike at the ball and, if not, call the pitch a ball. Should the base umpire call the pitch a strike, the strike call shall prevail. Appeals on a half swing must be made before the next pitch, or any play or attempted play." I have no idea how that testing turned out though
  16. Yeah that's the thing, the foul line or some other reference point would be a decent starting point as long as every hitter stands in the exact same place in the batters box. I know they all tend to stand at the back of it these days, but for another batter who stands even a foot closer to the pitcher, his "half-swings" would be way out of whack by using the foul line. That's the inherent problem with this kind of call when using some sort of physical marker on the field as a guideline. I'm sure umps want to get the calls correct, but it's been demonstrated time and again that in certain situations, umps have a tendency to err on the side of wrong. The strike zone mysteriously expands in a 3-0 count for example.
  17. Would it surprise you to know there is absolutely no rule that covers what a swing is in the MLB rule book? It's 100% up to the discretion of the umpires. There's no mention of breaking the wrists, no mention of how far the bat head has to travel towards the plate... nothing. Technically, the umpire could call any check swing a strike based on the fact that the hitter started a swing and stopped, even if the bat went 6 inches forward or 3 feet past the front of the plate. It's kinda ridiculous that's there's no mention of anything in the MLB rulebook that gives even the slightest bit of guidance to umps on check swings, or as they referred to in the rule book - but not really defined... half swings.
  18. And holy f*** what a bad call it was. This was the 1st base equivalent of the Joe West strike zone... his wrists didn't come close to breaking and they were well back of the front of the plate, or whatever other criteria that is needed to determine a swing. Even in real time I didn't think it was a swing, then the side view replay came up... yeah, that call was brutal. This is why I'm never in favour of adding more "umpire discretion" into the rule book. Their discretion is usually pretty random, indefensible and quite often wrong.
  19. They were there before he retired too.
  20. Yes. They have to take the 1st 2 years into account as well as the breakout year.
  21. The players big issues are service time manipulation and competitive balance. They want the talent spread out more so most pennant and playoff spots are not decided with weeks to go in the regular season.
  22. Not worthless, just very very very open to bias.
  23. Maybe not in some divisions... but in the AL East, you damn sure need to plan on being really good. Not just solid. The goal of every team in the regular season should be to score as many runs more than the others as possible, not just 1 more.
