  1. According to this index, we have better education than countries with very privatized systems like Sweden and Finland, so that's certainly not a fix-all solution. Of course, the study also has the U.S. way ahead of us, which obviously isn't right, so it could be complete B.S. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_Index
  2. I considered taking the IB program in the first year it was offered until I heard about the 7:30 bus pickup. It's only offered at one school here, at the far end of the city. I've heard good things about it though and while a fair number of kids can't make the cut and drop out, it seems to be of net benefit.
  3. You're taking the wrong message from what I said.
  4. I always looked down on my sister and made fun of her because she had to study for hours. I was quickly jealous of those same skills. There's no easy solution though. What do you do with a hypothetical kid in grade 4 that has a grade 10 math and science skills, but grade 4 language and maturity levels.
  5. I was always in the low grade of a split class and I thought it enhanced my education, allowing a few of us to go to high school after grade 7. Maybe it's bad for most cases, but certainly not for kids that aren't challenged in their own grade. I think that's one of the biggest problems in the school system. The smartest children are also the biggest problems because they find school easy and boring and act out. Getting 90+ on every test without studying is nice, but I remember not knowing how to study when I got to University. A failing grade on a couple of my first year mid-terms was a real wake up call.
  6. I'd still encourage my child to be a teacher if that's what they want to do. I'm friends with a few teachers and we don't exactly compare our salaries, but it's rather obvious that they make more than I do as an Endangered Species Biologist, which took 5 years of schooling, maybe more for some. I'm of the opinion that people in the public sector should do that kind of work because they enjoy it and not for the money. I'm not going to pretend that I'm a big shot in line for an executive position, but I wouldn't take it if offered. If I only wanted money out of life, I would have gotten a business degree and sat in an office all day. I'm sure I'll get another rant, but keep this fact in mind. Canadian teachers are in the 99th percentile for world earnings.
  7. He won an MVP, but sucked in the 92 World Series. Time to sell high at age 55 before he loses value.
  8. Regional bias is alive and well, though Trout was certainly deserving.
  9. Frangraphs went over that. It was a ball and it is called a ball more often than not.
  10. Their skin is black, which is pretty cool. I got to see a problem bear that was being transported to another area in a town near Cochrane.
  11. There are bound to be some painful casualties when you suddenly replace a successful regime, but hopefully Shapiro will bring in some of his own bright minds.
  12. I mentioned Lobaton as a non-tender guy that might fit in an earlier post.
  13. Pitchers shouldn't be considered for the MVP award if the Cy Young isn't going to be awarded to the player who is best at pitching. The fact that we're forced to use the Cy Young Award as something that it wasn't intended to be (pitcher MVP instead of best pitcher) just goes to show the inherent flaws in the voting system. This is just my opinion, but I'd like to see the award based only on pitching. I think it's a unique skill that deserves recognition. Pitcher defense already gets recognized with the gold glove.
  14. Well there's Ryan Hanigan, but I don't see that happening.
  15. I've always held the belief that the Cy was for pitching and not fielding and it's completely subjective since there is no clear criteria. Please don't turn a good baseball discussion into something else like the others do when they can't counter my points effectively. You brought up some good stuff about game calling and framing.
  16. To clear that up, Gibbons said that, not LaCava.
  17. That's a 20th century way of looking at it. We can quantify the impact of defense on pitching statistics quite well.
  18. "The Hank Aaron Award is given annually to the Major League Baseball (MLB) players selected as the top hitter in each league" I'm not saying you're wrong, but if the Cy is a combined award for pitching and fielding then I'm curious what this award means to you.
  19. That's why... Overall performance is what the MVP is for, is it not?
  20. I'm not sure it's possible either, but systematically ignoring the best DIPS that we have right now sure doesn't help in selecting the most deserving candidate. I've yet to see a convincing argument as to how it does. Game calling is a collaborative effort (other than Buehrle), so I kind of disagree there, but that would be very hard to quantify indeed. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't pitch f/x contain all of the data necessary to assign a framing value to pitchers? I can't really speculate on who will do it and when, but the data seems to be available.
  21. Nobody should be untouchable, but I can't think of a deal where moving Donaldson, Martin, or Stroman makes much sense.
  22. I suspect that sometime in the near future, framing will be added to catcher WAR and subtracted from pitcher WAR. When that time comes, I'll be happy to judge pitchers based on the new formula. To me, the best award is one that reduces variables and including catcher framing would do that. We go to extreme lengths like that to come up with reliable DIPS and then we turn around and add in another unnecessary variable (defense) or two (hitting) back into the equation for the Cy Young Award. It makes no sense.
  23. Using your logic, a pitcher with prime Ivan Rodriguez behind the plate is better at pitching because nobody steals bases. Maybe we'll figure it out some day, but if we can't quantify a pickoff move then don't pollute the award with uneducated opinions from stupid writers. Stick to the bare bones, which is pitching.
  24. The lack of criteria for the award causes a lot of confusion. He's not clearly wrong, but I interpret the award as the best pitcher and not the best fielder or the best hitter. Those two clearly separate skills are part of the MVP criteria in my opinion. That award isn't pitcher specific, it's for everything.
  25. Spanky made a good suggestion in Kratz. There are options, but how do we know if they can catch a knuckler? If they can do it, I'd suggest Steve Clevenger (lost spot with Wieters back) and Jose Lobaton (non-tender) as possible options.
