  1. Hell no. Why would we even consider that?
  2. The A's are taking calls on Jesse Chavez. Projected 4.7 mil salary, 3.86 ERA, 2.2 WAR. Useful as a long reliever or starter. I'd certainly give up a B prospect to acquire him. He'd be an ideal guy to stick in the bullpen as insurance and probably get 20 starts.
  3. There's nothing wrong with it for me when I use chrome.
  4. I'm not certain that parting with a ton of prospect capital for a Boras client is the best use of our assets right now, but if the price is right then go for it.
  5. Thoughts on this pipe dream roster? Stroman Iwakuma (3/42) Dickey Estrada Hutch/Sanchez/Osuna Osuna/Sanchez Cecil Lowe (2/8) Hendriks McAllister (and T.J. House for Revere, sign Aoki 2/14) Loup Blanton (1/4)/Hutch
  6. Flaws and all, Sanchez is an excellent reliever. Sending him down when we're going for a championship isn't smart. I'd have him in the rotation as things stand now, but that can be debated.
  7. There's enough budget room, but they aren't going to do that either way. We're built to contend now and have two talented pitchers on the roster, so we're going to use them. Sanchez is what he is, a great reliever and an average starter. There's no 'fixing him' that can be done in AAA, as he's got a perfect delivery and still can't command. Osuna is more of an unknown, but he's going to put up a couple of WAR either way.
  8. There's no good reason to put either guy back in AAA after they have experienced success in the majors.
  9. I was quite surprised when I saw Cahill's numbers during the Cubs playoff series. His velocity spiked a touch, but his pitch usage was the same and none of them really stood out as having increased effectiveness. I'd be curious to know what drove his success.
  10. I'm not sure I understand the 2 year deal when there are other similar guys who may not even get big league deals. I'm thinking Pete Kozma, Clint Barmes, and probably several others.
  11. I'd consider him for the right price, but only as depth after a top 4 of Stro, FA #2, Dickey, and Estrada. 30 starts of an ERA between 4 and 4.5 is what it is. I don't care if it comes from Mike Leake, Ian Kennedy, or Mike Pelfrey, as long as it is cheap. I'm honestly warming to the idea throwing 3-4 mil at Joe Blanton as a long guy. The fact that he made it to the Pirates on waivers shows than he isn't valued much, but he can't be worse than Scott Copeland.
  12. I'm still puzzled why the same posters who understand that a guy like Pelfrey can be an option for our rotation can't comprehend why Sanchez can do the same. His career K/BB and GB% are better, he's cheap, and he's just 23. It's not a huge stretch to believe that he is an average starter, especially on this turf and with a very good infield defense behind him. The list of pitchers that get 60% groundballs is very short; only 4 in the past 5 seasons.
  13. I would say average is a much better description of his minor league stats than 's*****'. He's been several years younger than league average all of the way through as well.
  14. He walked only 3 and and 2 in the starts I didn't include. Use the whole season if you want, it makes literally no change in the discussion. Focusing on the periphery of my argument doesn't generate any meaningful baseball discussion. The discussion I brought up is the merits of paying for an average starter when we have one in house. Lacava and others advocate signing 2 starters, presumably one mid-tier guy and another like Pelfrey. I'd rather put all of the money towards securing a better starter on a short term deal (ie. Kuma or Lackey vs Leake or Chen) and use the average starters that we already have in house, whether it be Sanchez, Osuna, Hutchison, or a combination. Do you care to actually offer thoughts on that philosophy??
  15. He walked 11 batters in the second and third games of that sample, so clearly not. Without being sidetracked and returning to my point, I think that if we have a spot for Pelfrey then we really don't lose anything by going with Sanchez instead. We don't know what he is as a starter, but we do know that he is capable of delivering similar results in the major leagues because he's done it. When Martin made a clear change and started to put the glove in the middle of the plate and let the action move it to the corners (roughly his last 4 starts), the results were even more encouraging.
  16. Mike Pelfrey is a viable option for our open rotation slot, but I think I'd rather hand the spot to Sanchez, who sported a similar 4.39 xFIP (and 3.12 ERA) in his last 8 starts after some rough command to open the season. I believe that sample represents his true talent as a starter, with room for a bit of upside due to his age. I'd rather use that extra money to pay a premium for a good pitcher on a short term deal like Iwakuma. http://www.fangraphs.com/statsd.aspx?playerid=11490&position=P&type=&gds=2015-04-27&gde=2015-06-05&season=
  17. Or to remain a legit lead off hitter. I don't expect a whole lot more from him going forward.
  18. Great career and certainly worth HOF consideration, but not before Edgar Martinez gets in. I won't miss facing him, but I'll miss having him in the game.
  19. Just like with hitters, it's unfair and short sighted to compare managers from different eras. They had virtually no access to advanced concepts of lineup construction and if you guys don't think that almost every manager in 93 would have done the same thing, you are kidding yourselves.
  20. Rich Hill just did rebuild his value in the East.
  21. If I could take my pick from the FG projections, maybe something like this: Stroman Iwakuma (3/42) Dickey Estrada Sanchez/Osuna/Hutchison competition Osuna/Sanchez Cecil Lowe (2/8) Hendriks Loup Hill (1/6)/Blanton (1/4) Hutchison That way you get a number 2 starter who is as good as Zimmermann and better than Chen/Leake types in my opinion and a chance to start our young pitchers with experienced swing men as insurance.
  22. I'm comfortable going forward with Loup as the second lefty and you should be too. His peripherals were off the charts good. There's a reason relievers are so volatile and it's because luck plays such a huge role.
  23. Right now, we're in a position where we can win in 2016 and have sustained success. Signing 2 pitchers to long term deals throws all of that out the window. The best idea for us is probably to sign a guy like Iwakuma or Lackey to a short term deal and also bring in some competition. That could be Hill, Lincecum, Fister, Blanton, etc. or it could be through trade or shrewd minor league signings.
  24. He pitched against us with the A's, I think when Sonny Gray got scratched during the win streak, and looked really out of shape. I'd take him on a minor league deal, but if he's already signed then there are plenty of similar guys to go after. There's no point in trading for him in my opinion.
  25. It was all Cito.
